Desktop advertising is big business, too. Google could decide that it needs to charge more for ads that feature Apple products or services. Or maybe just direct searches on Apple/iPhone related terms to bad reviews while displaying ads for competing non-Apple products. Drop in a little valid html that breaks Safari, just for fun. Searches from an iPhone could just return "Fatal Error Code 14-5: Contact Apple Support" or "iPhone License Expired: Contact Verizon Wireless for Upgrade Options".
When Apple throws a punch maybe they should be ready for the counter-punch.
It seems like there would be an potential opening for an archive of old apps (at least for the free ones). Maybe someone in the Android community will provide such a place.
Actually you can. I've been waiting for the a grocery store chain to pick up on Apple's business model by preventing their customers from being able to shop anywhere else. The trick is in the implementation. Maybe put a toxin with a 2 week lifetime and an antidote with a 1 week lifetime in all of the food? "Shop Safeway or you're gonna die." Even if they didn't have a majority of the market, they would have a monopoly for people who need the antidote. Does that make it any less a monopoly? If it's not a monopoly, then is the market somehow controlling the prices Safeway can charge?
If you ask for $100,000, the granting agency pays $153,000.
Reversed causality. A better description: "If you need $100,000 you ask the granting agency for $153,000." But it's more complicated than that. Some things are exempt from overhead.
Having a paper in Nature is the gold standard in research and I don't think this stance will do their researchers any good.
Science is the gold standard. I'd put Nature more around copper or tin, with the top area specific journal in the field a gold/silver alloy. At any rate, you might be surprised to find that a Nature or Science paper on your CV rarely makes the difference in an interview. Generally being able to do something nobody else in the world is doing will get you the job.
Both Science and Nature are an attempt to mix public outreach with scientific article publication. It's better to publish in a normal journal, put the paper on line, and then call SciAm, Science News, Astronomy, Sky&Tel, etc. reporters that you've met at conferences or who have called you in the past. Or have the University press office issue a press release. It is what they are there for.
Disclaimer, I am at UC, and I am working on a paper I had considered submitting to Nature (primarily because it would probably have problems at Science because there is some speculation in the conclusions). I don't think using a different journal will reduce the buzz, but I'll decide what to do when I decide what to do.
Guitar Hero on the iPhone. HOW?!? Kinda missing the guitar there...
Guitar Hero has been available on other phones for years. On touch screens you just touch the strings on the display. On non-touch screen phones you press keys on the phone.
Don't worry, next year he can change his mind and remove that capability. And everyone will be in awe about how perceptive he is about their lack of need to read PDFs.
They can buy them, but it won't matter until Android is updated to do the same auto-pixel doubling trick the iPhone uses to support the higher resolutions.
I'm assuming you're being facetious, because everyone one knows that the Android GUI doesn't assume a single fixed screen size in pixels. Apps have always needed to scale properly on Android.
Designing an API with hard coded screen dimensions would be just plain stupid. As would letting app designers assume the screen size would never change.
That makes no sense. AAPL has been growing like crazy. IBM has not. So you'd rather buy IBM and get a bit of growth and some dividends, over AAPL, which would give you massive growth and no dividends?
You seriously believe that Apple is going to be so profitable that it will be the largest company in the world in a year, and that this rapid growth will continue forever, justifying a market cap never seen before in any company? I believe that's what they call drinking the koolaid. There is a limit to the sales growth that can be achieved in a finite economy. There are growth opportunities that have a fairer price. But if you love Apple, feel free to buy and hold.
Who said anything about color? "Civil Rights" are something everyone has. "Civil Rights Legislation" is something designed to restore civil rights to those who have been denied them.
Assuming that civil rights means "black people"... That probably does make you a racist.
That's funny, because before the war the UN inspectors said he didn't have any WMDs. Bush and Cheney also knew, but they had a war to sell. So they got the last doubter in the administration, Colin Powell, to stand up in front of the UN with a vial of anthrax. I was sickened watching Colin Powell betray his country like that, because I knew there were no WMDs, and Colin Powell knew there weren't any WMDs. Powell had a choice, be loyal to the country, or be loyal to the President. A assume that he felt that being loyal to the country would be an impediment to the political career, so he chose the President. I feel sorry for him, but not as sorry as I feel for the country that he, Bush and Cheney betrayed.
How would you feel if you where under investigation by the DA and somebody felt they should leak evidence in your case to the news?
This is more like a case where the DA had video of a murder clearly showing the identity of the murderer, but refused to prosecute because the murderer was a campaign donor. In that case, I would hope that someone would leak the evidence to the news.
Given that the intelligence analyst who allegedly leaked the video chose to risk spending time in a military prison by leaking it, I'd guess that the video was not typical. If he'd seen any more damning video, he would have released that. I'd guess he thought it was unusual to kill that many unarmed civilians because there might have been an RPG in the vicinity. I'd also guess he's disappointed that no action has been taken since he released it.
Well I need 1 Gbps wireless service at all points within the continental United States. That doesn't mean that all the cell phone companies that can't provide that are providing crappy service. If you need higher speed than you can get with Verizon, choose someone else FFS.
Let's just hope you can drive to somewhere that has signal so you can make that upload. Why the hell did they let you out of the office so soon after upgrading to a custom kernel anyway? Why aren't you at least at home for the weekend where you have good connectivity? And why should they believe you'll make this patch correctly when you screwed up the kernel code? And decided to install it on a Friday afternoon? That's it! <mr_spacely>Yoooooou're Fiiiiirrrred!</mr_spacely>
But at the federal level I pay my taxes so the money can be used to bail out whatever group has their hand out this week?
Do you even know where your federal taxes go? What fraction goes to bail out whatever group has their hand out this week? Or do you consider Social Security a handout? Please tell me. I'm all for reducing the DOD by 2/3rds, but I doubt you counted them as a handout.
When you see politicians in Alabama claiming their opponents aren't real creationists or biblical literalists, it tends to reinforce the stereotypes about the South. When southern school boards continue to have fights about teaching evolution, it tends to reinforce stereotypes about the South. When Texas school boards remove Jefferson from the curriculum because he was mildly anti-christian, it tends to reinforce the stereotypes about the South. Not to mention that if you visit there, the continued institutionalized (does not mean government) racism is usually pretty obvious.
Do I think the South would bring back slavery? No. Do I think the South would get rid of civil rights legislation? Some of it. Do I think the South would enforce civil rights legislation? A small fraction of it.
Call me when Apple's PE ratio gets back down to 14 or so. Then maybe I'd buy it.
Apple's income last year $5.7B. IBM's income last year $13.4B. Apple's PE is 22, IBM's is 12. And IBM pays a dividend rather than back dating options for Steve Jobs
A device doesn't need to correctly advertise its identity correctly in order to browse the web.
Or Apple could be less stupid about what it does with it's prototypes.
Desktop advertising is big business, too. Google could decide that it needs to charge more for ads that feature Apple products or services. You can't have a monopoly on your own store.
Actually you can. I've been waiting for the a grocery store chain to pick up on Apple's business model by preventing their customers from being able to shop anywhere else. Go to Stanford then where things are nice and cheap. Just Kidding. How did you get into a UC without being smart enough to order your books on line?
If you ask for $100,000, the granting agency pays $153,000.

Lame? Kinda.

You're blindly assuming that the forward projections of Apple's income is correct. That's based as much on hype as the stock price is.
Another person who doesn't seem to get that IBM and Microsoft are different companies. If I was given MSFT, I'd sell it immediately.
I love how people can't seem to distinguish between IBM and Microsoft.
That makes no sense. AAPL has been growing like crazy. IBM has not. So you'd rather buy IBM and get a bit of growth and some dividends, over AAPL, which would give you massive growth and no dividends?

Drug and education policies directly intertwined with civil rights.
Mod this AC up
