what is the real difference between security people and crackers? For the most part, if I were planning to put together an elite team of security people, I would likely start my search among reformed and highly skilled crackers.
I would then augment this team with a few veteran UNIX admins and network specialists, and BINGO!
It really only makes sense... if you want to beat them, you need to know how they think and function

this was one of the biggest problem. there was no vendor to call, and all developers used in creating the software were either gone or working on something management deemed "more important".
not to mention the complete lack of docs on all software... =/
I have been working on this problem in one of the largest financial institutions in the nation, and let me tell you that you're kidding yourself if you think y2k was a hoax. yes, the media and some individuals over-rated the event by even talking about the world ending, but this was indeed a very serious problem.
i have seen what happened during the early tests, when systems with production environments were launched ahead into 2000.... most just quit working, quite simply.
I really wish there was some way to show these people who are calling the event a hoax the parallel universe on 1/3/2000 that did not invest the money in fixing this problem! I'm sure they'd change their tune.
the credibility of this is that it is coming from a techie who is immersed in the systems, and not from some media idiot, or some manager-type who wants to look good...
at any rate, it is an absurd thought that any government should be able to prosecute someone on the basis that they are "linking" to something illegal.
who even knows what is illegal these days? will i be fined for linking to Microsoft after they are declared and illegal monopoly??? *grin*
it's amazing that no one here has mentioned having color cases yet!!!
I dont care about a color screen, but it would be nice if they would powder-coat the case and make Palms available in a few nice colors...
It's kinda like cell-phones in my office--everyone has their nokia 6120/6160 in black... its nice to be the only one in the office with a forest green nokia:) makes me feel like i havent completely conformed
this is not meant to be flame-bait. only meant to correct someone who is spreading FUD.
to the poster: get a clue! maybe if you spent more than 5 seconds learning Solaris you wouldnt post such clueless garbage.
like any other OS, including linux, you must download patches for your OS. this is nothing new. default partitioning needs to be fixed?? why the fuck are you using default partitioning? get a clue! partition your drive according to your needs for the system! everyone who has been using *nix knows this. a webserver will have a different partitioning scheme than a database server, than a workstation, than a.... ad nauseum.
to have programs that install but do not inform the person that the program they are installing will be sending *anything* over the network that might entail privacy and/or security?
this way, when we DO find out that these morons are using their fun little programs to track us, they get a nice stiff fine from the gov't ?
( start conspiracy_theory )
or *maybe* the gov't is using companies like this as a smokescreen to watch all of us;)
redhat is not making any more money than the day the stock went public...
PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT STOCK in redhat and had faith and/or took a gamble are making money by selling redhat stock to those who want it--at a much higher price since demand has since gone through the roof.
i've been using linux since the 1.x kernels, and i must say that there is nothing quite like a nicely tuned monolithic kernel.
aure, modules are slick and cut down the size of the kernel, but i still think it's a good idea to compile all "necessary" stuff into the kernel (like ethernet, mouse) and never have to fuss with it again.
agreed! our enterprise falls back on console/terminal xyplex servers for when everything else is dead.
where do you people come from??

I honestly don't know why everyone is griping. I work as a contractor (UNIX Sys Admin) for a Fortune 500 company and I am treated quite nicely. I go in anywhere from 7-10am (my choice each morning) and leave when my 8 hours is up. I put in about 10 hours overtime per month, and that's just from carrying the oncall laptop/pager/phone for one week each month.
everyone knows that salaried people just get abused! quit working salary if you don't like 60 hour weeks!!! Go to work as a full-time employee of a consulting company. I mean, sure, they get 50% of my earning, but I still make more than any Sys admin here who works full-time salary for the company.
what are you saying? un*x sucks? since its not "new era open source buzzword-filled crap?"
please call me when I can run an open source OS on my Sun E10k's.
not to flame, but...get real! open source software is great, but it does not shadow our "old era" stuff just yet (maybe it does in *your* little world).
maybe next they will show spoofed footage of the
mars polar lander. "see, NASA isn't all that bad
after all".
bah!
where will this stop? why not just have max
headroom report the news from the surface of
Neptune? we rely on news to be REAL and in NO

i guess it's time to start wondering about the

I've been hanging on to my 3com stock for 2 years
now, watching it do nothing but go down and sit
at pitifully low prices.
this IPO announcement brings me hope that maybe

I think you'd better go find a freshman chemistry
text and look in the index for "supercooling" and
"superheating" and go read those sections.
it is VERY possible to get water hotter than 100 C
and colder than 0 C at atmospheric pressure.

i love linux, don't get me wrong, but it has a LONG way to go before it can displace Sun or any other big UNIX vendor.
MS is a much easier target because its software and OS is so buggy and bloated and crappy...but Sun??
call me when linux can give me the same performance as Solaris on my 64 cpu E10k's.
let's just give the people that do idiotic things (burning eyes with curling iron) DARWIN AWARDS!!
