    Neptune? we rely on news to be REAL and in NO
    PART FAKED.

    i guess it's time to start wondering about the
    validity of everything *except* that which we
    behold with our own eyes...

    what is the real difference between security
    people and crackers? For the most part, if I
    were planning to put together an elite team of
    security people, I would likely start my search
    among reformed and highly skilled crackers.

    I would then augment this team with a few veteran
    UNIX admins and network specialists, and BINGO!

    It really only makes sense... if you want to beat
    them, you need to know how they think and function

    this was one of the biggest problem. there was no vendor to call, and all developers used in creating the software were either gone or working on something management deemed "more important".

    not to mention the complete lack of docs on all software... =/

    I have been working on this problem in one of the largest financial institutions in the nation, and let me tell you that you're kidding yourself if you think y2k was a hoax. yes, the media and some individuals over-rated the event by even talking about the world ending, but this was indeed a very serious problem.

    i have seen what happened during the early tests, when systems with production environments were launched ahead into 2000.... most just quit working, quite simply.

    I really wish there was some way to show these people who are calling the event a hoax the parallel universe on 1/3/2000 that did not invest the money in fixing this problem! I'm sure they'd change their tune.

    the credibility of this is that it is coming from a techie who is immersed in the systems, and not from some media idiot, or some manager-type who wants to look good...

    about that which escapes his understanding...

    in this case, someone wanted to figure out how
    the encryption worked, and they DID...whats so
    illegal?

    illegal.

    appealing to people who like the "futuristic" look?

    I couldnt even see any displays in a lot of those
    pictures =/

    why cant they just show what some of these
    wearables would look like when people wear normal
    clothing?? (not that I didnt enjoy the models...

    it's amazing that no one here has mentioned
    having color cases yet!!!

    I dont care about a color screen, but it would
    be nice if they would powder-coat the case and
    make Palms available in a few nice colors...

    It's kinda like cell-phones in my office--everyone
    has their nokia 6120/6160 in black... its nice
    to be the only one in the office with a forest
    green nokia :) makes me feel like i havent
    completely conformed

    more than 5 seconds learning Solaris you wouldnt

    like any other OS, including linux, you must
    download patches for your OS. this is nothing
    new. default partitioning needs to be fixed??
    why the fuck are you using default partitioning?
    get a clue! partition your drive according to
    your needs for the system! everyone who has been
    using *nix knows this. a webserver will have
    a different partitioning scheme than a database
    server, than a workstation, than a.... ad nauseum.

    that might entail privacy and/or security?

    this way, when we DO find out that these morons

    the day the stock went public...

    PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT STOCK in redhat and had faith
    and/or took a gamble are making money by selling
    redhat stock to those who want it--at a much
    higher price since demand has since gone through
    the roof.

    i love linux, don't get me wrong, but it has a LONG way to go before it can displace Sun or any other big UNIX vendor.

    MS is a much easier target because its software and OS is so buggy and bloated and crappy...but Sun??

    call me when linux can give me the same performance as Solaris on my 64 cpu E10k's.

    i've been using linux since the 1.x kernels, and i must say that there is nothing quite like a nicely tuned monolithic kernel.

    aure, modules are slick and cut down the size of the kernel, but i still think it's a good idea to compile all "necessary" stuff into the kernel (like ethernet, mouse) and never have to fuss with it again.

    just my $0.02

    I honestly don't know why everyone is griping. I work as a contractor (UNIX Sys Admin) for a Fortune 500 company and I am treated quite nicely. I go in anywhere from 7-10am (my choice each morning) and leave when my 8 hours is up. I put in about 10 hours overtime per month, and that's just from carrying the oncall laptop/pager/phone for one week each month.

    everyone knows that salaried people just get abused! quit working salary if you don't like 60 hour weeks!!! Go to work as a full-time employee of a consulting company. I mean, sure, they get 50% of my earning, but I still make more than any Sys admin here who works full-time salary for the company.
