Let's worry about screwdrivers instead. Bell Telephone used to teach people to put them in their back pockets, until they found out that their technicians were puncturing their kidneys. We need more corporate responsibility here! Either that, or a Screwdriver Control, Inc.
Me, I just say that Screwdriver Control is hitting your target. -russ
Here's a picture of RMS in a patent office.:) Actually, RMS is quite a gentle person, so no one should think he would actually do something like that. -russ
Well, no, specifically I'm thinking of RPM and other RHAT-authored software. But still, intangibles count. When you sell a trademark, you are expected to transfer the goodwill associated with it. You can't sell a trademark and then go telling everyone "It's just a name, I'm still in the same business and still providing the same service." -russ
when the licensee frustrates the licensor's expectation of zero profits under the contract,
Oh, Redhat has an expectation of zero profits? Not at all. They expect that externalities of the freedom of the GPL will result in large profits. If someone attacks the freedom of GPL'ed software, they attack Redhat's profits directly.
Anybody remember the short story about alien invaders who were basically stupid? They intended to take over Earth, but earthmen found them gullible and easy to manipulate. Read it in a collection of short stories 25 years ago. -russ
Well, we're getting up there. I'm 42 and I still enjoy legos, when I can pry them out of my son's hands. Is there anybody who's dead and still enjoys legos? -russ
What seems more likely is that *she* took pictures of her tits, and had them on her hard drive. Why? Shit, I don't know, people do stranger things than that in my breakfast cereal. -russ
won't including OpenMotif in an OS distribution then make it an non-OSI-compliant OS and illegal to include OpenMotif?
No. They are really only talking about whether the kernel itself is Open Source. They want to make sure that the people who have traditionally licensed Motif continue to do so. It hurts them not at all to give us LessTif users Motif.:) -russ
Microsoft doesn't write drivers. They rely on vendors to do that. Yes, they provide some scaffolding, but in this particular instance, it's completely an IDE driver thing. -russ
This just means that you shouldn't trust your ISP not to fink on you. If you want anonymity, go through an anonymizing service.

That's wanting a not-perfect child. It's a different thing from not wanting a perfect child.

When have parents ever *not* sought perfect children??

It's hard to imagine a more poorly equipped person to deal with the Human Genome Project than Jon Katz.
The future has met its enemy, and his name is Jon Katz. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

A Matrix sequel?? But Neo is all-powerful now. Even Superman had his kryptonite.

It could have Ewoks, you know.

Is there anyone else who can represent us better? If we don't describe ourselves, we will BE DESCRIBED. And you'll like it even less.

Over the Chunnel would be an even better idea -- you could build a station.
