Just in case some didn't know.....with Roku's newly updated Media Player Channel, you can play local network content from various DLNA servers. It even works with XBMC's upnp server. Of course, unlike PLEX or Serviio, XBMC doesn't transcode so you are limited to compatible content. But it does work as of the December Roku channel update.

Really? While some folks have a few problems installing XBMC just like any software, for the most part it works without a hitch. I have installed XBMC on multiple windows machines, and Ubuntu machine, and multiple OpenELEC installations. The only time it didn't "just work" was a Rasberry-Pi. And in that case it was working correctly with a little settings manipulation.

I can't speak for PLEX, but I rarely see significant problems on the forums related to simple setup, and they have a huge user base.

  7. Re:Media Server? on Ask Slashdot: Suggestions For a Simple Media Server? · · Score: 1

XBMC is an awesome Media Player. It is also a decent Media Server. Distinguishing between the two is key to getting the right solution. If you have XBMC on your end device (player), and if your media files are accessible via the home network, then you don't need a media server. However, you may want one if you have other devices you want to use to access that medai (tablets, Roku, etc).

As for Netflix, just go ahead and use a dedicated device such as a Roku or a Bluray player with apps. You won't get a good Netflix experience with XBMC (kludged for NF), or most other media player softwares. Don't waste time trying to find it. Closest thing would be a WD LIVE.

In the end, if you want it pretty and functional, you'll need to put some work into it. "It just works" often means "it barely works to my needs". Music libraries require meticulous tagging. Movie libraries should be organized with Media Center Master or similar (or XBMC can do it for you as well). Use MCM and setup of PLEX or other servers can be much easier.

Some will recommend Raspberry Pi as a player. It can work but it can be very fidgety & might struggle with some HD content. Better with spending more on a capable hardware if you are adding a player. (Intel NUC 847 with OpenELEC installed is a low cost, strong option).

Final word. DLNA works but is clumsy. Look for non-DLNA solutions.

The job of a good power system is to make sure you have capacity that can relatively quickly ramp up production to fill in the gaps, e.g. hydro power or gas plants, or perhaps in the future some sort of grid-level storage. Wind power is compatible with this model. That's why it, despite your remark, actually works just fine in practice.

You cannot ramp wind up and down all the time, so I wouldn't call it entirely compatible with that model. It certainly can fit in the model at the appropriate levels. I agree with the future storage, if that is ever economically viable it would be a game changer.

  9. Re:bfd on Record Wind Power Levels Trigger Energy Price Fall Across Europe · · Score: 1

I think you meant that the article says nothing about the cost of wind power, which is correct. An oversupply is the cause of the price reduction, and that is a result of all of the sources combined, not just wind. The question is, how much money is each source making or losing when prices are depressed? You won't find that information in most of these types of articles, but it is an important factor in future investment.

This is the first truly thoughtful post I came across, so I'll add my input here.

You can go to a place like homesecuritystore.com and find all the pieces and parts for just about anything. I installed a simple hardwired system with a keypad, alarm board/box, battery backup, internal and external sirens, and two motion sensors inside place strategically so that you would have to pass in front of one of them to get from room to room. Cost was a few hundred bucks for a basic setup. (Mine was DSC brand). You can add phone connection or email alert features if you desire. Cameras are nice, but not as useful IMO.

Get a sign and stickers. That's the first deterrent. If you can see through your front or other entry door, mount the keypad in plane sight. This is another deterrent. My theory is that many thieves know exactly the time response for the bigger companies. If they see a non-standard alarm system, they become less certain about what to expect.

Why would I lie and day I hate photovoltaic? It is a great technology, I have never said it was a bad technology here or anywhere else. I have not said one negative thing about photovoltaic in this thread. In fact, if you have an electric car, it makes sense from an engineering standpoint to put a solar cell on top of the car, if for nothing else than keeping down battery drain or maybe even cooling/venting the car when parked in the sun. Any added range would be a plus. The lifetime cost/benefit information is not available in this article and is not really a topic for this thread, but that would be another interesting discussion.

I have nothing against solar power. I do have problems with how it is being touted, deployed, and financed, based on my personal analysis, but that is not relevant to this thread or discussion.

But we now have another post from you...that is about ME! That is kind of weird. I am just here for the technical discussion. I am an engineer and if I see drawbacks of having a system that employed a large Fresnel lens carport, I will talk about it. If you want to join, you are welcome, but please either dispute a point, elaborate a point, or present new or different information. Stop focusing on me and attacking me when you don't even have a single alternative point to make, its weird in a stalkish kind of way.

Yes, you could possibly filter out some with the Fresnel lens. The question would be how much would be practical before you eliminate useful (convertible) light? (I use the term 'light' loosely as we are talking about the full spectrum). More efficient panels have multiple capture layers. I wonder if this might have some small compounding effect vs a typical opaque material, as more "light" is captured? There may be some research out there on panel heating, it would be interesting to see what the conclusions are.
