  1. Remember your teens on 13-Year-Old Suspended For Hacking Commits Suicide · · Score: 3

First off, I'd like to say that I think it is unfair to load all the blame on the school. However, for those of you criticize him for doing a "silly thing"... Do you remember what it was like to be thirteen? Do you remember being a teenager? Part of being a teenager is being unstable, he didnt have to have problems in order to do something like that, 30 thousand people in America commit suicide every year, do they all have problems? The truth is that when you are thirteen and have never been yelled at before it will scare the crap out of you. This is a kid who go nothing but praise his ENTIRE life and to have to deal with a 10 day suspension (can you say "goodbye ivy league"?) is heartbreaking. When you're a teenager losing your girlfriend of two weeks is a huge ordeal, imagine this. Thinking logically, yes its a very rash reaction, but the bottom line is you dont think logically all the time when you're a teenager. I'm not saying we should exempt children from the law, but we have to keep that in mind. Adults all too easily forget the feeling of every emotion seemingly swallowing you whole and thats not fair at all. Ever wonder why "kids these days" always seem to be rebelling? Maybe because they cant adults who can empathize with them. I'm well aware there are plenty of adults that can help kids get through those times, but the sad truth - and yes im stereotyping - is that there arent too many of those adults in school authority positions. Do you really think kids feel safe talking to their guidance counciler about their problems? Before we condemn people for "silly actions" we have to try to see things from their perspective.

From what I've read they make crytography out to be a very scientific task, but is there really any more logic involved that just trying different charecters with different values? I know the basic idea of trying to get small two and three letter words but is there really anything else but that involved? How would you go about solving something like this with 14 different charecters for 'e'?

  4. Need a compromise on Against Intellectual Property · · Score: 1

The problem is that while no one wants things like fire and painting copyrighted, people deserve to make money off of their good use of the basic ideas. A person shouldn't be able to copyright the process of painting, but they deserve to make money if others want to use a painting they created. The same goes for software that may be based on similar concepts but is built up in different ways. While all desktop or server operating systems fall into their respective catergories because of the basic purpose of the OS, they are seperated by how they accomplish it. We need to focus on those kind of aspects because those are what determine what deserves copyright protection.

When running the car you won't be using the battery. 8. How does this work? on ABIT KT7 With Built-In CPU Multiplier Adjustment · · Score: 1

I know dating back to the PII's and Celeron's chip companies have been "clock-locking" their cpu's to prevent overclocking and mislabeling, but I was under the impression that the lock was on the cpu rather than the motherboard. I was pretty sure that AMD did the same thing and that was the reason for needing golden hardware hacks. Is the restriction actually on the motherboard, and if so how come no motherboard manufacturer did this before?

  9. Morals? on Artificial Chromosome Inheritance · · Score: 1

Although it's great that we are getting into the position where we can't augment newborns abilities, we have to look at the morals of the issue, and in certain cases determine what they are. I've been raised under the notion that cloning is wrong without ever really being explained why, and at this time I'm still leaning towards that belief, however I've never been able to come up with a reason. Being a computer nerd I usually go by logic which would tell me that if I can't come up with any reasons not to do it, it should be done; however I and many people I know still have the nagging feeling that theres something wrong with it. And I'm favoring going with my gut instinct in this case. Just wondering what other people's opinions on the morality of things like this are?

BTW, why can't any companys with new products come up with websites until six months after i hear about it on /.?

The big deal with deal with digital is that those little 1s and 0s amount for much better quality as well as an unlimited amount of copies without any effort. I think what they're doing is ridiculous because they can never stop pirating. For any format to be useful it has to be decodable. And that means that someone will write a program to decode it into a standard format. As for DeCss, that's not nearly as big a deal as they make it out to be. Who's gonna waste four gigs per movie? Every time someone goes out and tries to make it a little easier for the average guy, the rich have to try and take it away so that they can make money, and unfortunately that will never change.
