But it is nice to know that the end of cobol is iminent.

As Aaaaaaanold said in the movie Conan: The Destroyer... "Lot on your knife!"

COBOL isn't going anywhere, especially with the advent of e-commerce. Did you know that there was more NEW lines of COBOL written than any other language except C++ and the difference between those two was something like 2%? Did you know that the COBOL language has been continually updated and modernized such that it is as modern a language as nearly any other? Did you know COBOL can do OOP?

Ok, it's been years since I've done any COBOL coding and I do most of my current stuff with perl but I still have to defend a very good language from the uninformed assaults against it. COBOL really gets a bad rap.

As most responces have said, your best bet is to have a dedicated system for this. If you're going to be doing any seriuos sound work that is really the only viable option. As for using VMware a CPU and memory upgrade will help and the next version (v1.1) that's currentlly in beta has fixed a LOT of the sound choppyness problems but I don't know if they've got midi support (yet).

Since this "filter" is 100% on e*trade's shoulders only a total idiot would even THINK about blaming RH. This RH bashing is starting to get sickening. Are they God? Hell no, they are just a company making a quality product. They do what they need to do yet still give back to the Linux community as much as anyone.

Now, I'm not personally happy with everything RH is doing but that falls under the realm of personal, phylosophical differences. They aren't doing anything anyone could remotely concider as "bad".

Bottom line: Shut the #&%$ up!

I know this is blasphemy but there's a fantastic commercial firewall system called GNAT Box that does all the NTA and statefull packet inspection you'de ever want and it works transperantly with all the fun stuff you mentioned. It's the only high-grade firewall system under $1000 and is completely self-contained (i.e. runs off of one floppy; no need for a HD or OS).

Now, I know that this post might engender some "warm replies" about the touting of non-open source solutions but I am pregmatic about this. I prefer open source solutions but am not against a propriatary/commercial solution to get the job done. If it's a good product it's a good product.

I'm afraid that your logic (or total lack thereof) is indicative of many in the Linux world today. This is very unfortunate. All it does is drag the whole Linux movement down. You might as well say you plan to choose a distribution based on the phases of the moon.

There's nothing wrong with selecting Debian (or Caldera or S.U.s.E. or Red Hat or TurboLinux or...) but do so based on at least a little intellectual reasoning.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, "People who think and act like this should go back to the dark side where they belong."

Many people who have to translate between their native tongue and English either make many spelling/grammatical mistakes or come off sounding very mean and "flamish" in their messages.

If you, or anyone, are a person who makes such snap decisions without any understanding or wisdom you shouldn't be running Red Hat or any Linux distribution. Go back to the dark side where you belong.
