  1. Misleading on Assange Makes Statement Calling For an End To the "Witch Hunt" · · Score: 5, Informative

Assange spoke today -- Sunday. That statement by the U.S. was released two days ago in response to Ecuador calling for a meeting of the OAS. It was *NOT* in response to Mr. Assange's speech, as the summary implies.

The only way I'd pay it is to put the whole lot on piratebay. You say that's not nice? Well, what's the point of it being public domain if you have to buy a subscription and it's mean to share it?

That is putting words in my mouth, and what I objected to.

On the Internet, everyone may not know you're a dog but by the tone of your comments they can be damn certain you're a douchebag.

Don't put words in my mouth. The reason I payed the $50 was to get access to the whole lot as lossless. I'm converting them from AAC to Ogg-FLAC with proper tags and will bundle them as a torrent. Pirate Bay is one of many places I hope to see them.

That *IS* the point of them being public domain, after all. And the entire point of this project was to share quality music.

Pay the $50 annual subscription to Musopen and download various stuff at high quality (lossless AAC). You will not be disappointed.

No, I'm saying it provides a layer of privacy expectation.

I didn't want to write paragraphs on radio direction finding and signal identification methods needed by a general observer, contrasting them with methods used by LEOs. They don't bother with that. They work with the telco to get cell tower signal data for the specific customer.

No, I am not incorrect. However, I might have been unclear. Let me try again.

When using an MVNO like Straight Talk that resells using T-Mobile's network, T-Mobile *does not allow non-network text messages thru*.

If you have standard T-Mobile service from TMO themselves, they do allow those messages.

Using T-Mobile I can get text messages from Google, my bank, and friends on other networks like AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

Using a Straight Talk account with a T-Mobile SIM I can only receive text messages from other Straight Talk or T-Mobile sources.

For example, using Bank of America's or Google's 2-factor authentication which sends a text message to your phone *does not work* using Straight Talk with a T-Mobile compatible SIM. It did work when I had service from T-Mobile directly. It worked again when I switched SIMs to an AT&T-compatible on Straight Talk.

Interesting about those WebGuard service. I did not know that.

Theatrical hype by the Foreign Minister of Ecuador, matched by your own theatrical ranting.

How about stating what the aide-memoire contained reflecting the UK position?

However the note did point out that the foreign secretary had the power to go to court to seek the right for UK police to enter the Ecuadorean embassy to arrest Assange. He would have to prove that international law had been broken and that Ecuador was in contravention of its Vienna Convention obligations in harbouring Assange.

The foreign office is confident these conditions would be met. It says the embassy would have a week's notice of the action and the police would not look at or remove any embassy documents and the diplomatic immunity of Ecuadorean diplomats would not be affected.

That really doesn't sound like "storming" to me. All from the Guardian live blog.

Calm down and discuss this rationally. It is a horrible step for the UK to even consider, but applying the partisan frothing-at-the-mouth ranting currently in vogue in American politics isn't helping.

  9. Re:Straight Talk on Ask Slashdot: A Cheap US Cellphone Plan With an Unlocked Phone? · · Score: 1

Just FYI, T-Mobile doesn't let outside SMS/MMS messages thru for the MVNOs.

That is, using Straight Talk, you won't receive any text message sent to you from anyone who is not on T-Mobile or Straight Talk. They were blocking the 2-factor text messages that Bank of America sends when I had them.

I switched to an AT&T SIM and it works fine.

  10. Straight Talk on Ask Slashdot: A Cheap US Cellphone Plan With an Unlocked Phone? · · Score: 1

A SIM car for an unlocked phone costs $15. Unlimited talk, text and web costs $45 per month.

I dumped AT&T and T-Mobile a few months ago and haven't looked back. This is cheaper and the same networks.

Avoid T-Mobile compatible phones for this service. Straight Talk is an MVNO and T-Mobile is a bunch of dicks. They won't let outside SMS messages thru. AT&T doesn't do that to MVNOs and SMS/MMS works fine.

I currently have a Google Samsung Galaxy Nexus and a HTC Glacier (MyTouch 4G) using this plan.

If you don't need unlimited, and it isn't a smartphone, ST has a $30 plan that might suit you. No commitment or contract, just get a new card at Walmart or refill online.

It does NOT broadcast your location to everyone within 45 miles. GSM, for example, encrypts the signal. Details about whom the signal belongs to and what it contains are between the subscriber and the service.

What this ruling is about isn't "other people", it is the State conducting a surreptitious search without a warrant. The nature of the radio transmission and the encryption give me a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Not really, as the Defense portion of the Budget is about $700 billion annually and the appropriations for the two wars is about $170 billion annually.

What is an interesting dodge is not accounting for the indirect military spending. Also, if you assign the associated interest payments on all that where they belong instead of a category by themselves you get a different picture.

Then military spending comes in at about 35% of the total budget.
