What about runnign it in N9 (as the current Nokia's Meego implementation does) or N900, or other devices (i.e. there was the rumor that Samsung would release a S III with Tizen). Don't follow HP example NOT supporting the Touchpad in the new open WebOS, unless the device just don't have the required horsepower or specific hardware.
Thats the problem. This is not about "we the people", is about the government/people in power/etc. The people don't know what they are doing in their name, and if someone dares to give them a hint, then its an enemy of the state.
The problem with those elements is that they are not stable. If one is created stable enough could be interesting to check its properties, maybe it could have some practical use.
Is about control, not the remote chance to find something they say that are after. The real enemy, depending from which side you take, is the population or the government, not outsiders.
In fact some years ago the web servers log were clogged by bots searching for installations of phpmyadmin, as something usually deployed and exploitable. If it have to be installed (and can't be restricted access using ssh tunnel/vpn/specific ip to mysql), at least that not be in a default directory name, and have a password protecting the directory access.
In fact, some backdoors keeps being there for years until, well, it went open source, happened with Interbase. And it was just the initiative of a single programmer, not company policy or government agencies requirement.
.. is that don't have the same meaning for everyone, everywhere, and thats the field where UN plays. What is blasphemy for ones could be holy word for others, what is "common sense" for ones could be a sin for others. Even claiming owning the truth, what is right or wrong (as most religions do) could be blasphemy for others, and binding governments with religions is a dangerous mix for that reason too.
Sometimes is good to remember that are involved people instead of big companies. Did the "company" knew about it or the people that received initially the report didn't escalated it? Who knows how much vulnerability reports they get every day, and how much of them are taken as dupes, already known, or plain sold to the biggest bidder, without the upper layers knowing about them.
Anyway, they are playing their role. It's supposed to be security by obscurity, so let put a shadow on all hints of insecurity. With a bit of luck the only aware of it will be the researcher that sent the report instead of the bad guys, so will be plenty of time to fix and schedule a deploy without anyone else knowing that it happened.
Or at least, an advanced enough technology indistinguishable from it, at least from the point of view of most people. In this age of science, is basically magic or any hint to get it what succeed economically, not reality.
With big enough hammers, you can whack a lot of moles. But also a lot of customers. Big media isnt helping to get sympathy hurting the ones that are willing to pay them refusing to sell (because they are at the wrong place), adding DRM that denies fair use, and adding a lot of unskippable "do not pirate" messages. That is something that goes straight to the legal, (still) willing to pay users, and in good part is absent to the ones that pirate it.
Instead of keep punishing everyone, accept that in digital copying happens, is basically the nature of digital things, so give something extra to legal customers, something not digital, i.e. cloud based services, discounts to live shows, or things like that, and turn them into loyal customers, instead of taking things away and turning them into even more moles.
Is impossible to translate fully a Discworld book, just too much of them is not visual. Instead, try to do a different film that catches the spirit of it.
Asimov made himself a similar question, but regarding time to dissolve resublimated thiotimoline. The answer is, of course, back in time. And may be not so different than the markets today, where predicting the future and trying to win money over that prediction is the game. Only is needed better prediction (and taking into account how it varies with your own moves, or the ones of all players using the same idea).
At the very least they didnt took into account the effect that will have their own predictions in the future, like measures taken by governments, corporations and individuals. Maybe won't try to stop that to happen, or push to make that a reality, or just no matter what they try to do it will happen, but anyway, is a factor.
Another factor that they didn't took into account is how much we changed with internet, and how much control on what goes there have some governments. Is a very comfortable medium to coordinate things, or express ourselves. Will be riots if the people get detained even before they try to do something?
People already thinks that is fine to have imaginary property, imaginary money, imaginary democracy, imaginary rights, imaginary gods, etc, why not have imaginary medicine? Could be a few for whom the placebo effect won't be enough, there maybe some other imaginary medicine could work, or then they could go to real one.
The OLPC's, meant for schools, included Scratch (and turtleart and pypy, but for me the the star is that one), so in more countries could had been introducing programming to children for years. It could be a good tool to introduce small childrens to it, as is very visual, almost a toy, but you can dig a lot on it. Not sure in which language or environment will be done in Estonia, but that could be a good approach.
Science fiction writers sometimes predict, and even shape the future. If they get upset enough with this could start writing new stories that could move our culture out of that dead weight.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and purpose too, unless you are specifically speaking about the will of someone. Assigning purpose to something like the existence of the world or universe implies a creator, founder, or builder, with a will. So the question looks more like religious propaganda than worrying about causality, existence or physics. So the idea is to not discuss that there is a god (er... god forbid?), but once you define that must be a god because belgium, then what purpose it had.

Would be more in the spirit of "So long and thanks for all the posts".

Certain US (and other countries) agencies needs them. How else they are supposed to do social engineering on iranian population?
Will be cheaper to use Jupiter than paying the Apple lawsuit for using a Star Trek based device with rounded corners
Wonder of something like this happened.
Tried to use a Windows 8 (phone or not)? Whacking it comes natural. So they got a great idea and patented a natural reflex.
No matter which side loses, even if both does, lawyers win.

Thats why the rush of suing Samsung to ban their phone or whatever one that could put a shadow over their new one.

I suppose that anonymous getting access to FBI computers (and making it public) answers the old question of who watches the watchers.
