  1. Re:What's wrong with Transmeta on UPDATED: Transmeta's Crusoe Unveiled · · Score: 1

your post is well written, but anyone could make speculations like that and come to any conclusion they wanted. that's the problem with speculation, if you try hard enough you can find facts to back up any probable outcome.

i prefer not to bother with attempts at playing psychic, and just wait until i can get my hands on a product made with crusoe.

right now, crusoe is not all that impressive, yes it can run any OS an x86 can run,.. so can an x86 chip :P but, what will be impressive is when they start releasing other VMs,.. you can have a laptop with linux, irix, solaris, be os, macos, whatever
you want,... all happily working together,.. that's what i'd like to see developed with this technology. longer-lasting battery life is well and good, but i'm not the type who travels much, so if i buy a laptop, at least half the time it's going to be plugged into an outlet anyway. (though i know this is not the case for most of you, i'm a selfish bastard.)

the ideal implimentation would allow switching without rebooting, let's all click our heels and hope this is what comes to pass... i want laptops that only boot when you first take them out of the box! ;)

a low power consumption x86 clone is neat, but not as impressive as what is to come.

Very well put, and six years ago I might have agreed with you, before I became the jaded person that I am now. Anyone who has really experienced how low corporate business executives can go can truly understand what Gates & Co. are capable of.

I think you would be very surprised at how inhuman many people, especially those who have survived to get into a place of power, really are. I have lost two jobs because of purely political reasons, when I was getting terminated at the last one they even told me, during the exit interview, that there was nothing anyone could have been doing better in my position (I was working an average of 70 hours a week the last two months.) Things weren't going well, they needed a scape goat, I was a likely target.

This company I was working for was tiny compared to a behemoth like Microsoft. When they will pull stunts like that for a matter of saving-face, how low do you think they're willing to go when billions of dollars are on the line?

No, I think the demonisation of MiKKKrosoft is completely justified, while not everyone who works there is evil, I've come to realise that most people who crawl to the top of the executive ladder have given their souls away somewhere along the line.

Then again, I may just be overly cynical. But, at least now I expect the knife before it severs my spine.

I would think the atmosphere up there would be too thin. Don't get me wrong, I respect RMS and agree with the fact of what he is saying, but I can't agree with his tone here.

I personally am not fanatical about either view, my main concern is that of most people out there; quality software available to everyone. Whether it's free or just dirt cheap is moot to me, and whether it's "free" or "open" doesn't matter either, in the big scheme of things. Right now the software industry is in the same shape as the auto industry of the 70s and 80s: ugly, inefficient POS everywhere you look. Sure there are some exceptions (the Ferraris, the Porsches, the Lamborghinis) but I'm talking about for the average person, they don't and won't know that what they're using is so terrible, until something better comes along.

That's how I see it. In my estimation of things, Joe Q. User will never make full use of the "free"-ness or "open"-ness of the software, but they will be happier when things work better whether they know it or not.

I'll leave with one of my favourite allegories: Why is it in software if a user screws things up and breaks the system, it's the system's fault? The system is too hard to use? Gas and Break aren't labeled in a car, P D R and N are sufficient for the driver to know what they're supposed to do. When someone crashes their car you don't say "Oh, well the car is too hard to use." Hmm,...

    that it will be.

    b) The problem is not those of us who know
what we're doing writing incompatible Perl on
accident. The problem is new Perl users getting
introduced to MS-Perl, and MS-Perl becoming defacto standard so that the majority of Perl out
there becomes Windoze based, thus basically

$1,000+ spent on characters personally on MUDs,
I would venture to say this is for 2 reasons:

    1) Generally MUDders are poor college students.
    2) MUDs are usually free, so while with UO it
actually DOES cost you money to develop characters
like the ones being bought, on a MUD you're only
paying for the luck of good statistics and the
