I guess intel is trying to convice the big companies that run Sun and DEC hardware that they are major players when in comes to the incredibly high end internet servers. Most of these companies don't even consider intel an option at all when purchasing servers.
For example: Recently I applied for a job at PlanetRX.com being one of their AIX admins. When I went into the interview they told me right off the bat that they aren't interested in any wINTEL or MAC experience. They didn't want MCSE(D). They wanted pure sun hardware experience with an expert knowledge of AIX and Solaris.
I guess intel is realizing that they aren't being shown as a big server processor making company, and that they have to come up with buzz words and say things like they are the "Intel in Intelligent Ecommerce"
I believe that the bug isn't just the intel chip. I think it is NT's lack of running at max capacity. How can they make a bug fix for hardware. I for one am not going to solder a mod chip into my PIII Xeon (if I had one). If it is a software thing they have to make it for every OS that runs on x86. I guess the bug fix will limit the maximum threads that the processor can do in the operating system, further slowing down the chip...
for the sake of arguement lets just say that apples tasted like chicken, and that apples came about in around 1991, while chickens have been around forever. What you are implying is that you are eating chickens and saying that they are poor imitations of apples, when in all acutality the apples model themselves after chickens...
its like saying that MACOS is a wanna be Win95.
sorry about the examples... I'm a little wacked out this morning...
I've run solaris on my home pc just as I have run linux. I purchased solaris directly from sun and it only cost me $18 for the x86 version and the Sparc version. In a corporate setting $18 per computer really does not matter all that much, but when you start getting into the $100+ for windows NT workstation and $500+ (I'm not really sure of the price, and I don't wanna know) for NT Server, then it begins to matter.
this would be great news for small business owners , but Amazon.com announced today that they are going to let people use their servers for e-commerce for only $10 a month and %2 of sales. This is way less than buying a dedicated server (even a celeron) and a cheaper ADSL or cable ISP. Once my sales go up that the %2 means over $100 a month I will definatly look into this...
I just realized I patented the source for the NT kernel check out the patent here. I also patented boolean functions and the base 10 number system. So all you metric countries watch out! I want royalties!
I explained that people don't use linux because of the $$$. Linux just isn't about OpenSource, it's about stability and useability. I don't understand where you got that I think that Linux users use linux in the sense of "Free Beer".
E-Machines (although how crappy they are) are roughly $400 and they come with windows preinstalled. So "Mexican" kids can own them (I don't see how you think that all mexican kids are poor).
1776 was just one example of a revolution.
Also, your anti-apple just doesn't fly. When talking about the condescending and patronizing tones in apples OS I can understand where you are coming from. On the surface the MACOS (not X) seems simpleton. You haven't just dug deep enough into it. I have seen MACOSX (actually it was Rhapsody at the time) in "action" it has a command line, and a stable GUI. BTW, that is not the only thing good about MACOSX. There are too many things to list here, and I never got that hardcore into it.
I think people are taking themselves too seriously. No matter how many IMacs are sold, or how many times Linux is downloaded, or how opensource MacOSX is, it won't change the world. Its not like the world is plagued (though some will argue) by the fact that people have to pay $100+ dollars to have a copy of Windows installed on their home PC. Society won't change for the better because everyone runs Linux. Kids won't stop shooting each other, smoking pot, or driving drunk because Apple gained a higher market share, or because Linux now has %78 of the server market (this is in the future). They are preferences that people have. You shouldn't do something because it will bring down the evil of the world (Microsoft). You should do something because it is your personal preference.
It's like apples(Microsoft Windows) and oranges(*BSD,MACOS*,Linux,Beos...). Lets say %90 of fruit baskets are shipped with apples. Since there are so many being shipped and people are demanding constant upgrades, the apples nutritional value is spreading thin. Some of the fruit baskets even have apples with bruises in them. Then one day someone stands up and says "Look people eat oranges! They are better and have more nutritional value! And they aren't all bruised up!". That person and all of his orange eating followers start fighting against the apple eaters. They consider themselves radicals who believe they are changing the world. The hoopla ends and the people who liked apples stayed with apples and the people liked oranges better ate oranges. Nothing changed except peoples personal preference. Their fruit baskets came with oranges instead of apples.
I could see linux changing the world if Microsoft acutally caused the world strife other than a money. For example, if Hospitals stopped running because NT bluescreened, or FedeX went bankrupt because NTFS fscked up and lost all the tax records and orders. This doesn't happen. When this is all over in 5 years or so, people will run what they want. Its not a "real" revolution. "Real" revolutions happened in 1776.
Let me make one last thing clear. Don't flame me for not being a radical. I run Linux because it is my personal preference. I dual boot with windows because I like games. I don't run linux to topple over the heiarchy of evil that is microsoft. I just like it. Please if you have any comments reply to this. I would like some feedback. Even if it is "Hey screw you buddy!".
-- The GeForce fared better in Shogo: MAD, scoring 61.3fps at 1,024 by 768, 16-bit, compared to 52.3fps for the Riva TNT2 Ultra card. --
Remember when the Pentuim III came out and everone was skeptical about how it was only like %13 faster than the PII at the same clock speed? Well that was because nothing was written for the newer extensions like Streaming SIMD. The GeForce 256 is in the same boat. Nothing is written for its 2 extra pipelines. So don't bash the GeForce for its 8fps increase...
Most of the things we use today are biodegradable... We use them in the most important things in out life... Heard of wood? Unless you plan to keep your keyboard for 30+ years I wouldn't worry...
I acutally kind of enjoy being referred to as a number. I guess its my computer side of my brain talking but I respond more to the last 6 digits of my SSN more than I do my name. My college teachers find it easier than trying to pronounce last names when taking roll, and in my History class we don't even write our names on tests anymore because when reading sloppy handwriting numbers are usually more legible than letters. I don't agree with wearing your ID on the outside of your clothing. My college ID is my picture my name and my SSN (which is also my student ID).
Dude... I wasn't making my own certified Toms Hardware type of benchmarks... I was merely protraying that the PIII had twice the VRAM and that both the cards did OpenGL.
Its the IBM 590 AMD Athlon 550 96mB of RAM 25GB HardDrive S3 8 MB video card (it does OpenGL) Some Generic soud card... Probably Crystal *****
It gets 64 fps in Quake 2 in OpenGL - Demo2.dm2 at 640x480 the PIII 600 HP w/ 16mb of VRAM (OpenGL) and 128mb of Memory only gets 44 fps in demo2.dm2 at 640x480... I was shocked...
At least AMD didn't try to release a mobile Athlon. Either they realized the power consumption would be too great or they learned from INTEL's mistake when they put their processor into notebooks without testing how the casing and rest of the laptop held up the the heat. I bought an old gateway (this was a while back) laptop w/ a PII 233 and left it running for a while and when I came back the case had melted to my table. I called up gateway and they told me I had to wait until Intel gave them the assurance that their new Processor+LARGER heatsink combo + less voltage wouldn't be melting people's Gateway laptops. All in all I bet AMD will think twice about releasing the mobile Athlon (provided they get the mobile chipset engineered in the first place) until the power consumption goes down or they can manage heat better...
I don't think 16,000 gigaillion ip's will be enough... I am planning on purchasing some ip's in the future and I'm afraid that 16,000 gigaillion won't be enough to satisfy my needs... (I might be wrong on my math or even the spelling of gigaillion... whatever... I am just making fun of stuff in general...)
In haste to make my comment I didn't think about the programmers releasing thier code under the GPL and then having some commercial company take it and close the source. In actuality though if it is released under the GPL you can find the source either on Freshmeat or by your own means. Whatever...
I don't understand these people who think that everything linux should be open sourced... the attitude that if its not GLP compliant it's not Linux. I could understand if it was software that was being released. Its not... its a distro... and the quote goes... "Linux is a kernel. Everything else in the distro is frills". Its not like corel is developing thier own closed source linux kernel. Just let them beta test.
This person is just another arguement for having no anonymous posting... this person acutally used up slashdot bandwith and used space on the hard drive to make some disguting comment about having sex with 13 year olds.
I am sick of all this. I am just going to find out where these damn servers are and break into the server room (physically with a crowbar), and crack the computers (physically with a crowbar), then when I go to claim my prize I will crack the people who thought they should get on the bandwagon by doing thier own competition (physically with a crowbar).
This just in!!!! Major motherboard and BIOS manufacturers are now holding a crack this bios password competition!!! The winner gets $1000 and a job redesigning the BIOS password code.

then how do kernel upgrades come about? All the linux users I know are kernel hackers. You just don't know the right people.
yeah if you write corrupt code... You can crash anything in 12 lines if you try hard enough
Why re-invent the wheel?
To make it better... The real question is would linux survive if Solaris was open source?
