    if i recall correctly, i think usb has a max transfer rate of 12Mb/sec (being mega bits) which is approx 1.5MB/sec (mega bytes).

    now imagine a harddrive running at 1.5MB/sec. thats just a little bit better than an internal ide zip drive

    this is why firewire was developed.

    If someone would just make sure that everyone had equal access we wouldn't have the lawsuits from the ADA about equal unfettered access to various services

    Are you now claiming that spammers are disabled in some way? Perhaps you think its a disease like Tourette's Syndrome; the spamers cannot help themselves? Perhaps the subjects of the letters i recieve should be something like:I'm sorry sir or madam, but I must send you this letter advertising this pornographic website.

    This is almost insulting to disabled people.

    if I for example hire a person to squish grapes to make wine the grape masher does not have a word of say at all in the process of making the wine.

    Lets carry this analogy a bit further:
    Lets say your grape smasher is going on his mary way, and he is smashing the grapes. People with baskets come and dump grapes into the mashing area, and he mashes them. One day someone comes in with a basket of shit. He throws the basket ito the mashing area, and the masher continues to do his job.

    After a while the guy paying the masher suggests that he wash his feet since his customers are complaining. The masher tells him its not his feet but the baskets of shit one of his grape people are bringing in. In order to keep his customers happy the guy paying the masher tells him not to let the guy with the shit add it to the mashing area.

    i proposed that we could setup an automated mirroring system. say ten min befor the article is posted, the poster could submit the url to a mirroring pool. those of us with spare bandwidth/space could then accept the url and mirror it for them. then they could post links to the mirror(but the mirrors wont actually be on their servers).

    this whole process could be automated. to delete the websites from the mirrors after a couple days....

    I could be wrong but...
    I dont think you have to use KDE to use a KDE application. You do have to have the qt stuff installed, but you can run the application in any WM/DE right?

    I have run a few KDE applications in twm. The only difference is that they cannot dock to the kpanel(which isnt running), and they missout on some KDE specific stuff. They are however functional.

    People need to be able to use some sort of graphics library when writing xapps; which would you prefer? Please dont say tcl. Its really slow. Could you comment more with respect to this?

    Kopka and Daly have a pretty good one for LaTeX:A Guide to LaTeX2e. It got me up and running in a couple days with the stander stuff that comes with RedHat.

    I think it's a pretty good book for beginners like myself. You can get it at Amazon/Barnes & Nobel.

    You really cannot beat the way TeX/LaTeX handles Chapters/Sections/Subsections, generates bibliographies, Table of contents, Lists of figures/Tables, etc.
    There really isn't anything like it that I have seen in current wordprocessors. (not implying that it is a word processor)

    and this is just for the last month. Before taxes he's going to get $196,584.00 for the entire year.

    this isnt that hard to do... i could stay within my back yard for a year if everything was payed for. It would be even easier if i was clearing almost 200K before taxes.

    TRUELY IMPRESSIVE:
    A person lives in a house on his/her own for a year. Living only off the money that he/she has earned online (sales/programming/sysadmin/etc).

    Just to play Devil's Advocate - although USENET is ill-suited to the transmission of large binaries, and although a full feed of .binaries.mp3 is probably around 100G per day...

    yeah, but people have adapted well to the limitations of usenet. when i saw alt.bin.cd.images for the first time i was truely lost in disbelief. it was quite orderly and my roomate didnt have too much trouble downloading whatever he wanted. i don't really have much interest in it since almost all of the software i use is free.

    it would be more efficient if they got the mp3 feed. it wouldnt be that hard to justify at the school where i did my undergrad-well it would be just as easy as trying to justify the alt.bin.pic.ertoica. which they had alot of.

    i agree that irc has a much higher learning curve, but necessity is the mother of invention. as for netnews. i can sit any schmuck who can use word down and have them downloading cd images in about an hour using agent. the hardest part would be getting him to stop posting to the .d groups.

    i would think that blocking netnews could be a pain. sure the local university servers might not carry the .binaries, but you can pay supernews 10$ a month for unlimited access. then it's just another tcp request which can be routed through proxies (proxies wouldnt be for joe schmoe). most universities wont start blocking stuff until they at least get some legal threat-even then most dont cave that easily.

    i know alot of people who use napster who are not in the techno eilte. their careers range from: college professor to mechanic to english grad students to medical doctor to chemical engineer. and those are just off the top of my head. i think the truely elite never quit using netnews and irc.

    3com has a liftime warrenty policy i believe. if you feel you got a bad batch you should contact them and send them back. my friends scarf up old bad cards from people and send them back for replacements.

    i have had good expirences with mine.

    i had a friend that worked at intel this summer. he said that something went happened with the suits and they pulled their people off of the linux testing stuff. he said that the guy in charge of getting linux to run on the ia64 was pretty pissed. it turns out he had linux booting when they pulled him from the project.

    this is strictly second had information, so you take it grain of salt.

    does anyone else have anything else?

    This product wasn't named "paper computer" simply to intrigue potential customers; the name is an accurate description - the PpC? really is a computer made almost entirely of paper and ink. The circuitsare actually placed using standard lithographic printing techniques; the solar power source and theprocessing chips are paper-thin and glued to the sheets.


    i dont think this accurately describes the casio's inner workings. i for one have seen nothing with ink circuits built into paper.

    i dont think they are actually suggesting that you drive with no lights on. i believe they are just showing extremes for comparision. my understanding is that the night vision will be used in conjunction with your headlights. like a thermal overlay displayed through the hud.

    well i didnt really have an opinion one way or the other when i went to see the movie. this is what i got from the previews:
    1. it had the black guy with the _COOLEST_ blond hair. he was the guy with the little blond nodes on top
    2. it appeared to have a really good soundtrack. it had massive attack's angle playing in the background. plus it listed alot of bands i like at the end of the commertial

    i know these arent the best reasons to go see a movie, but that was all the trailer showed....
    well after the first 15 min you never saw the guy with the cool hair again.. and i dont remember any really good songs...

    i too noticed that there was alot of far fetched crap...arnold couldnt catch a toungless preist gimping along, but he could catch up to a car and jump on the back. the helecopter could lower between buildings to pick him up, but it couldnt get clost to the top of a building to drop his ass off? why? because there wasnt enough room. wtf? the list goes on...

    i did however think it was all very funny. i kind of feel sorry for the people in front of us. my friend and i would bust out laughing each time we saw this bullshit.

    so personally i was very disapointed that i had paid for such crap. but thats just me.

    Its obvious the guy who asked /. didn't know other work was being done. Thats why he asked /. I dont know how hard it is to find out...

    I would however go down to the bottom of the main /. page and SEARCH for psion and click on the 5th LINK.

    At least that is what i would do if i were given the oppoturnity to decide what would be posted on /.
