SGI IRIX, solaris, hpux, and all those are just simply not scalable, reliable, and arent secure at all compared to a red hat distro.
I'm not sure here (perhaps someone could help me out here), but i think solaris is considered to be pretty damn secure.
sun hardware cant compete and is way overpriced. a quad xeon with linux could blow a sun e10000 out of the water. its time to get the future now... linux+intel
Now I know your on crack here. Currently linux does not scale well above 2 processors. This will probably change in the future.
you really should think a little harder befor you dish out such moronic criticism. what do you expect from an AC get an account its free
A side note: slashdot readers who like YRO stories should realize that we will posting an increasing number of them in the YRO section only - they won't ever appear on the main page of slashdot.org, but will be accessible via the Sections link on the left side of the page, and there's a YRO slashbox now, too, so you can see the headlines for YRO on the home page if you so desire (and are minimally competent at setting your user preferences).
not only is this a long sentence, but i think it might have something to do with the colors
perhaps they are using the colors to distinguish the different secitons? just a thought gimpboy
It would be like if I hacked slashdot and put up an mp3 ftp site. The RIAA couldn't prosecute Rob or Hemos. They would find an prosecute me. People are so afraid of the RIAA. If I were in their shoes I would only listen to law enforcement officals.
actually. if you hacked slashdot and did illegal things. rob and hemos would be responsable for stopping your. if they didn't do anything, they could be sued for your actions on their part. their computers are their responsability regardless of who hacked into them.
if you are at a school and you are using the schools network you are under their law. the administration can trun your network off whenever they feel like it. its not your network. if you are using their network for illegal activities, it is the administrations responsibility to deal with you.
i am speaking from expirence. geffin (sp?) records put the smack down when i lived in the dorm, and the university disconnected me without a word. i was rather disturbed at the time, but they were within their right. i was pretty lucky no legal action was taken.
they are actually doing the students a favor. if they didnt stop them the riaa could easly have them arrested.
instead of having pez in your meta tag just put metapez in your tag. then we put a button on serch engines that says click here meta search.
if you click on the button, it will put the word meta in front of your search words. then you click on search and then the pez company will never come up.
Hey. Sorry for your bad expirences in the US. I cannot say that it wouldnt have happened here, but those I identify with probably wouldnt have given your too much hell.
As for spur of the moment killings, these kids aren't waking up pissed at the world and saying: "Hey I think I should go to school and kill everyone." What they did was (for highschool students) pretty well planned out. It was something they had been working on for quite some time. They also didnt just have guns. They were also armed with explosives (obviously not very good with them or things could have been worse).
I feel that if you want to kill someone, the tool you choose to use is irrelevent. If I was going on a suicide run, guns would be the first obvious choice. Sure you could take them away. Then I goto the internet or the library and figure out how to make napalm and c4. Its really not that hard. Now you decide to ban household chemicals... oh dear. Now I crack open the gas line in the school and light a match.... then you ban natural gas as well as the petrol the cars run off of. Now I am forced to use nerve agents (much more effective than guns. Perhaps I an uncapeable of making nerve gas-I must then take on the entire school with swords and knives. I think you get the point. Shortly after the killings I was watching an interview on cnn with a woman in the UK. She said that she didn't understand why Americans felt that we needed guns. Well in history classes here we have this topic called the Revolutionary War. That has alot to do with why we feel we should have the right to bear arms. john
actually it is different than having your boss standing over you shoulder 8 hours a day... he can stand over everyones shoulder:).
really thought. for that 8 hours your shoulder is his shoulder... he's the one renting it and the (Fuck You... -666 head blah blah) head attached. if this monitoring reduces productivity he will take it away... its an evolution of sorts..
the people competing aginst the computer probably have more than one story... they probably show their stories to someone and ask for their opinion. they pick the best one, and change things in it to make it better.... i think in the balance of things its pretty fair.. i seriously doubt they looked at 1000000 stories and picked out the best one... when was the last time you sat down and read a million pages? thousand? three hundred?
a General Ridicule Liscense. if you feel you have had your words stolen, send the case to a centralized website. there your grievance will be looked into. if the site operators feel you have been plagiarized, they will make a posting with the a link to the original work, the copy and the contact info of the offending person.
it could be a subset of/.
then we/. them until they give in.. or something to that effect.
i had alot of trouble with ripping audio cds a couple years back. i tried alot of ide's and about 40% of the audio i ripped had littl blips and whatnot.
i got a 32x scsi pioneer drive. in windows it was really inpressive. i could normally rip from 9x to 11x. imho ide really just doesnt cut it for sustained transfer rates.
i downloaded a program and installed it. when i typed./configure i dont remember checking for gdelphi.... ok those results seemed real weird. i must have been out of town when the survey was posted. i didn't realize delphi dev was that big of a deal. i also agree with the gtk/qt gnome/kde conundrum. i guess alot of people in europe use delphi?
did you read what was said? port 80 is the only availabe port to crack on...
imagine this... i make houses and i say that my latest model is the most secure house on the market (tinshanty2000)... so i tell you to try to break into it... i give you rules to follow... ie i give you a tooth pick and a dull tack. then i take you to the house to break into it... when you get there you see a house with on door on top that is composed of concrete walls 15 feet thick. and i say ok break into it... (oh yeah the door on top can only be reached by transporter from startrek...
and you ask why they break into the site... you are a moron.
this is just a way for microsoft to use the talents of its oppostion and not pay for it. this will inturn make the final release (or whatever you call it) of w2k better by pointing out serious bugs and allowing them to fix them before the offical release.
this challenge is just a ploy trick people into working for them for free to improve the next release in the line of pathetic products.
yes you can recycle water. as you can with all chemicals. the reason water is essential is because you need it to make food. for example:
you could bring up lots of food and water---> that would cost alot.
there is a dollar amount placed on every unit of mass(lbs or kg) drug up to space. i don't recall what it is, but i do remember that it was very expensive.
water has a mass of 1kg per liter. for every liter of water they find on the moon, they save that much money
plus if they find enought water on the moon it will make it easier to grow food.
ok so i get online and i goto one of these places selling crap on the net. i fill my shopping cart full of crap and instead of hitting the "checkout" button (or what ever it is called) i hit the "quote" button. the web page can generate a number associated with that quote.
next i call the crap peddler on their 800 number (all crap peddlers have 800 numbers) and say "i need to make a purchase; i have a quote number" i give them the the quote number and what ever else they need to send my the crap and i am done.
no 5% sales tax to help the kiddies
basically what i am saying is that there is no real way to enforce this. not to mention international trade.
i guess i need to go write my senator telling him what i think of this-this would probably do more good than bitching on/.
has anyone got managed to get the netshow port to play.asf files? if you have please email me. it tells me that it needs a codec i cannot seem to find.
actually.. i was under the impression that hotmail was running bsd. either way, it still proves a point. if the dork really needs evidence, he should go to microsoft.com and try to find something using their pimp-daddy search engines.. the damn thing crashes half the time.

you will find this: ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/linux/THIS_IS_A_TEST_DIREC TORY
which says:
This test directory contains a partial Debian tree and is used for testing purposes only.
This is NOT the soon to be released CorelLinux Distribution.
[ $!# RS x1499 ]
i'm not sure what the crap is at the bottom, but it is clearly a beta at best.
john
Standards... well then tell me the standard way to install a package that works accross all Linux distributions?
./configure make make install
um.... rpm -Uvh bob.rpm or if you prefer
pretty standard from my end

Actually if they have the security set up correctly in NT, you cannot kill the process (User Level Security)...

thats what the "Other" catagory coupled with the "Comments" option are for.
