This sounds like a stop-gap measure. Sony is not having as much success with the Cell chip as they want so their console will be delayed. The new PS2 will give people insentive to pick up a new one instead of a Xbox2 or a GamePolyhedron and wait the year for the PS3. Provided that Nintendo or MS dosent distribute something similar at a similar cost.

This is only a Western thing. Sony tried to call the PS1 the PSX in Japan but it did not take.
