  1. Re:Our friends at Apple... on Ask LinuxPPC Co-Founder Jason Haas · · Score: 1

One specific example. The quicktime technology is now used on Windows as well as Mac Systems. But I can not view these same quicktime files on my LinuxPPC base G4, and have to reboot into MacOS.

I have followed Linux on Mac hardware since the early MkLinux. Is there any hope of Apple giving back to the Linux community

  2. On the other hand on Massachusetts Universities To Require Laptops · · Score: 1

I am in the process of getting a daughter through CMU's computer science program. She was advised NOT to buy a computer until she had been there for awhile. The school has numerous large clusters and the students hang-out in the clusters doing homework and socializing. She did but an Apple laptop that is setup to dual boot in MacOS 9 or Linux. This matches here interest in art and computer science. My point was CMU computer support group had no problem with her setup. So here was one major school saying wait awhile, and saying the choice it yours. I would be interested in the policies at MIT.

  3. Closed Witness List on New House of Reps Site on Science, Math, & Tech Education · · Score: 2

I was disapointed in the witness lists. I did not see anyone out side of the education industry. After many years of being a practicing chemical engineer my wife decided to give something back and start teaching middle school math science. With a masters in ChemE you would think that she could get licienced, but not so. It was not the education courses, she was willing and did take those. She did not have the right kind of MATH courses. The state required college algebra and college geometry. Calculas, and engineering ecconomics were not good enough.

I do not see anyone in the witness list to give me hope that the closed education industry will change.

Speeking of Carnigie, what about an aternative?

At some risk I would like to know the thoughts of the readership on that other computer school CMU. An alternative program(scholarships not buildings) at an alternative school might be positive.

As a disclosure, yes I am an alumus of C-MU
