Heightened sex drive and fertility... birth control makes it tougher to get pregnant, those who have sex more often should wind up with more children.... who, when older, might be predisposed to having sex more often.

From the article: "Others believe we could blend ourselves with machines in unprecedented ways -- turning natural-born humans into an endangered species."

    Like... c-sections.

Oh and earlier sexual maturity... there's no longer a risk of killing the mother. With social safety nets, infant mortality and the ability to provide for the child is not an issue. Horrifying as it might seem.

Multiple births are also non-fatal these days, although fertility drugs make that tougher to determine if it is a factor.

    It's all speculation of course.

For something like this, the website is a big part of the product... they really don't seem to have much differentiation from Redhat, that is, in their business model.

I think Novell's success is tied to SuSE's success... but the website looks like a corporation selling a Linux distro rather than a corporation sustaining and growing a Linux distro around and with the community. Is there some nuts and bolts SuSE hobbiest site that I'm missing? Kind of like what Redhat seems to be trying to address with Fedora?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I shouldn't feel like I'm freeloading off Novell or contributing to a private corporation's profits by using/contributing to SuSE. To me a bit part of Linux has always been that you can fix the problems yourself. Opening incidents with SuSE or contacting SuSE technical support seems silly to me.

So I have to wonder why to recommend SuSE, or even use SuSE... then why to invest in Novell?

The distinction was that the emulators were designed to emulate the CPU's instruction set, which resulted in dramatically worse performance, whereas Wine was restricted to the Intel architecture and just implemented the Win16/Win32s/Win32 API.

This is a discussion forum, we're supposed to speculate about things we know nothing about. I speculate that it's naive to expect that the people making decisions for companies have reasonable motives or know what they're doing.

Here's a better "wild-ass" guess: Airlines are led by people who recognize that large jets, while expensive, can be amortized as a loss over, for example 20 years.

However a large jet could boost an airline's safety record and profitability with almost complete certainty for 10 years. This is long enough for wise investors to cash out and decisionmakers to be promoted or commended before foisting off the pending disaster of an aging fleet of jumbos to their successors.

So this generation of aircraft manufacturers look good, and they can make this generation of airline leadership look good, all by foisting the risk of a few crashed jumbos onto a future generation.

To me, it seems more wise to keep a large enough number of aircraft in operation that they can be continually replaced over a multi-decade cycle while at the same time calculating in risk of premature failure which can be absorbed.

As an extreme example, any idiot can make millions flying one new jumbo jet from New York to Tokyo, but with only one jet, they can be broke any day, and the risk of that increases with every flight. Worse, when you're the pilot making a decision as to whether or not the airline will fly that day, you face the decision as to whether the company goes under or you fly a potentially dangerous aircraft.

I'm quite sure that the latest round of Republocrat elections led the Republican party to choose to differentiate itself from the Democrats by espousing fine traditional Catholic values including tolerance and respect for their neighbours, oh and legal enforcement of Catholic morals regarding abortion and gay marriage. Bush was a perfect leader for this given his track record in Texas.

The Democrats weren't very sharp to fail to parrot those issues. Having been soundly defeated, they probably will do so during the next U.S. federal election, restoring the flip-flop of the two party system.

My point about gun toting catholics with rabbit-ear antennae was only that they matter, not that they necessarily got Bush elected... sorry to imply that I thought it mattered which of the two parties won.
