I just read that Viacom patent and one of their claims really stood out:
creating, using a computer program for developing customized drawings under a control of a user, the pictorial frame elements having an arbitrary pictorial design;
I'm not a patent lawyer, but it certainly looks like they're claiming to have patented drawing images on a computer.
Because there was a Microsoft to provide an OS to them machines that Compaq managed to hack away the IP rights from IBM we all enjoy hardware advances we would have never seen otherwise. All this, at costs WAY below what would otherwise have been available.
If my deciphering of that is correct, you're saying that the MS OS helped Compaq clone the IBM PC. The truth is, Compaq only had to clone IBM's copyrighted ROM BIOS. And there's always the allegation that Gates & co. didn't even write DOS, but stole it..
In an optical mouse, the processor and camera probably don't take the majority of the necessary power (being, most likely, CMOS devices) - the big power draw is the high-intensity LED.
One thing I've heard is that CRTs give the appearance of an image where it really isn't (either in front or behind), therefore making it impossible for the eyes focus in the image. With LCDs, this doesn't occur and they should theoretically be easier to look at. I know I prefer my 12" laptop LCD over a 15" Trinitron any day.
On a Mac, you need more than just a Windows emulator (which Wine Is Not). Since the Mac OS runs on m68k/PPC, an i386 processor emulator is also needed to get the binaries to actually run.
Of course, I imagine you could use Wine as-is on the Intel port of Darwin.
It's hard to say what they'll need to know without knowing more about the enviroment (apps, etc), but it's safe to say that they are going to need access to the passwd command to reset the passwords that are going to be forgotten every day (obviously, you would want some sort of wrapper around the actual passwd command that only allowed changing passwords on end-user accounts), some way to unlock locked accounts (if you have implemented account lockouts after a certain number of failed logins), and probably a way for them to restore user files from backup.
How do you remotely manage the box? VNC? Great. Hope you never need to unstuff a full event log over a modem.
Actually, a number of the NT management utilities (including event viewer) can be connected to remotely (requiring of course that you have the tool on your workstation and the appropriate open ports on your firwall). Speed over a dialup line isn't too horrible either. (Provided of course that your phone line isn't utter crap like mine... 1000+ pings routinely which render even ssh useless).
Still, it's no match for being able to ssh in and do absolutely anything right at the command prompt (or even tunnel X apps back to your workstation if necessary).
Many people in Apple's target market aren't suited to 2+ button mice. Its not really a valid criticism -- Apple's serving Apple customers.
Apple's also serving fewer customers than they could be. There are two reasons I would never buy a PowerBook - the single mouse button (sure, you can plug in an external mouse, but that's limited to where a flat surface is available) and the fact that they only offer a touchpad. If Apple offered more options, they could have more customers.
I've heard both the American Woman cover (just poorly done, not particularly *bad*) and the American Pie cover (rather weird to hear a woman singing it). I thought the Kid Rock cover was almost offensive, when he said "I ain't no fortunate son.. bitch".
Of course, the funniest current cover I've heard it Britney Spears doing the Stones' Satisfaction.
My $0.02...
Andrew
Yeah, you can set it to use any font available. The feature I like most is the syntax highlighting. While it's certainly no emacs, kwrite is very easy to use and gets the job done well.
IMO, Kid Rock shouldn't be allowed to perform either.. I heard a recording of him covering CCR's "Fortunate Son" at Woodstock '99 - it was worse than any cover I've ever heard.
When you say drum, I think of the spinning cylinder jobbies (think sewer pipe).
That's correct - the original poster was talking about *old* hard drives, which did use drums.
CDW has what you're looking for (Belkin F5H300), and at a price that doesn't look too ridiculous.

My program, dailystrips, automatically downloads web comics so that you don't have to visit several different websites.

Where the 'n's are hex characters. There is no plaintext transmission of the username and password going on, but it could just as easily be sniffed and used for unauthorized access.

Previous article is here
Last time I checked, it was story, Hemos.
software/cables/moose package
Must be a rather large package..

Earthlink/Mindspring has been doing that for months

the Gnome "middle-click" pasting method.
That's a concept from X Windows, not GNOME. Personally, I prefer the highlight to copy, middle click to paste method.

But are there chickens that have been engineered to lay cheese yet?
The IRS was responsible for that, not the company.
What exactly are the satellites going to do?
Quoth the article:
he plans to build a 544-satellite constellation to provide earthbound Web hosting and e-mail.
and
The orbiting Apples would use a modified version of the Apple Airport wireless-data device to transmit information to users here on terra firma.
It looks like the Macs aren't going to be the web/mail servers (*earthbound* hosting) - all they're going to do is manage radio signals?
I've seen something much like that on top of one of MIT's buildings - not positive about what it i, though.
I don't seem to be detecting any logic here. DVD *is* the successor to CD.
