    I'm not sure what the actuall OS limitations are, but each program under WinNT can only access 2 gigabytes. Under Win9x a program can access 4 gigs, but will likely crash itself or the system if it accesses anything other than 1 of the gigs.

    Except that MS's stock isn't based on hype of any kind. I can be fairly sure that MSFT isn't going to lose half it's value tomorrow from some market fluctuation - they have stability. RHAT, on the other hand, is not what I would call stable. It's still to early in the game to put much faith in their stock value... That may change, but until it does, I'd rather invest my money in the boys from Redmond.

    No thanks. This is a discussion forum, not a game. I'd hate to see people's motives for posting diverge from the noble path towards something like "Ooh, I'm only 5 karma points away from beating Sun Tzu!!!"

    Besides... Nobody would ever beat ol' Brucey :)

    I'm running the Mandrake 6.1 Beta (Cassini) right now and all I can say is "Good Stuff". I've never used Mandrake's dists before (mostly stuck with RedHat), but I'm really impressed at the amount of useful applications and cohesiveness that they've crammed together on one CD. And, on top of that, it's even easier than RedHat to install (although, not by much). Cheers to Mandrake!!

    The first time I tried Caldera, I found that their boot disk wouldn't work on my machine. It just hung there forever. Sort of reminded me of Windows :) I hope they've gotten all that worked out. I say try them both!

    How could Zero have been his default at the time? This new rule hadn't been implemented then, and he isn't an AC. His comments should've started at One just like everyone elses. Those comments were actually moderated *down*. Seems like a waste of points to me - his comments aren't that bad.

    Should a user be moderated down on the basis of his previous comments?? That seems a little unfair to everyone. If I were DaveO, I would change my username and try to start fresh - this sort of bias is just plain improper. Of course, with the way he talks about himself in the third person, I doubt it would be long before his new name was identified.

    Of course, then we'd all spend most of our time micro-moderating. It's a decent idea though. No one would have the power, individually, to alter anyone else's posts. Actually, now that I think about it, that makes a lot of sense - I say let's do it. Email Rob, my good man, and set the wheels of moderation in motion.

    Agreed. His posts were almost all unfairly moderated down. I say we start a "Moderate DaveO Up" campaign... Ok, maybe not. It seems to me that someone who doesn't like DaveO must have gotten Moderator Status and used all their points on his postings - that's twisted though.

    Also: How about getting rid of the ability to tell which post was made first, second, etc... That, along with randomization, could put a huge dent in First Posters.

    Seriously, I just looked at your previous posts... While I wouldn't necessarily have moderated them *up*, I don't think you've been fairly handled. Nothing you said was so poor in quality that it needed to be shot down... That's very strange. On behalf of the Slashdot Community (which I'm in no place to do) I apologize.

    Except that they wouldn't be taking ANY of the code from GCC. VC++ is just a frontend to MS's compiler. It just runs the software in the background. GCC could probably be a drop in replacement. They would not need to change the licensing on their software at all.

    Interesting idea.
    Everyone knows that MS killed off Netscape by giving out IE for free. Well what if they were forced to do that with Office and even Windows? Where would they get their money from? Developers? Support? Hah, they'd have to clean up their support-lines a whole lot before that would work. MS may be actually end up cutting off their own supply lines just to stay in the game. And guess who wins, no matter what?

    It's FUD to assume that there might be *some* reason that this guy uses FreeBSD over Linux?? Yeah, that makes a world of sense.

    I resent the hell out of the fact that anytime someone says something in favor of a non-Linux OS, they get labelled as "FUD spreaders". By a friggin' AC no less. FreeBSD is a great system. The fact that it runs Linux binaries makes it that much better. Can Linux run FreeBSD binaries?? I'm not sure, but I know there's no system out there that does it out of the box.

    The guy said that FreeBSD has a stable kernel. He didn't say anything about Linux, and yet you assume that he was putting Linux down. Let the man use whatever OS he wants. Fsck you and all your little AC, script-kiddie friends that are ruining this perfectly good forum we once had.

    I've set up OpenBSD as a firewall here at my office and I love it. The system is stable, easily secured, and fairly fast. If a script kiddie put all that in motion, then more power to him. It's not about personalities, it's about a good operating system. Period.

    I say 'Let the car companies sell doors that don't lock' - no one's forcing anyone to buy the car. Now, granted, a lot of companies out there have already set their standards to this particular model of car, but now that they know the doors don't lock, they are free to buy new cars who's doors do lock.


    Um, fsck the car metaphor - I resent the fact that in today's society everything is the fault of someone else. Can't we just take a little responsibility for ourselves? It's not M$'s fault. Period. If someone open's up an email attachment that they can't *guarantee* is safe, then tough luck, but they should've been more careful. So the end-user is a moron in that case, why should anyone else be liable? The only other person who's accountable should be the bastard who wrote the virus in the first place.


    I guess my beef with this whole thing is that MS get's unfairly pounded because their software was exploited. BFD, they DID acknowledge that Macros could be dangerous and all the new versions/patches to Office make that very clear to new users. Their software is a tool, just like anything else - no more, no less.

    Let's give credit where credit is due. MS wanted AOL to open up their standards, so it's only fair that MS does that same. Good for them. Who cares if they're only doing it to wipe out AOL - it's still a good thing. Now maybe the GAIM people will add this to their client and we'll be able to talk to MSNers as well as AOLers... C'mon, it's the little victories that make it all worthwhile.

    This is the problem with flame wars - people say things just to make the other angry. How can you say that this guy was part of a group that critizises but never stands behind his words? For all we know, he could be running a quadruple-redundant server with 10 different leased lines and 4 different power supplies. And for that matter, what part of what he said made him an incompetant IT?

    Okay, so you don't like what he said. Fine. Agree to disagree and be done with it. Flames make me sick.

    Well NT may not be the best at graphics, but it's got a whole lot more going for in that area than Linux does right now. We need to get some really good (stable) OpenGL drivers out. I personally cannot wait for XFree86 4.0 - my TNT2 wants to play.

    That was, in all seriousness, the most uninformative article on Linux that I've ever read. Basically all he said was, "I'm not saying switch to Linux, but if you do, it's okay". Like anyone out there really waits for Jesse Berst's say-so.
