It's not excessive to expect someone to recompile their kernel to get optimal performance under extreme circumstances. It would be excessive to expect someone to recompile under tiny differences, but we're talking about the difference between 64-128 megabytes and 256 gigabytes of memory. People setting up machines that use such enormous amounts of RAM won't be put too much out of their way to recompile with a ENORMOUS_MEMORY option.

Good question; here's the answer. Any networkable machine can *run* applications that are located on another networked machine. You're right, it's as simple as filesharing.
However, only X (to my knowledge) allows you to *display* applications that are being run on another networked machine. The distinction is that, while the application is running on my Intel-based system, it can be displayed on my Macintosh machine 1000 miles away. The benefits for remote-administration are substantial.

I've never met anyone, Jamaican or otherwise, who spoke like Jar-Jar Binks. His accent was original; it just borrowed strongly from a Jamaican accent. I don't see why that's such a big deal.
Yeah, it was an annoying voice. But that doesn't make it racist.

Fundamental difference in what you're trying to accomplish. With IP, you don't have to send a request to every node of a network. Routers forward your packets directly along a path to their destination.

Double? It's a lot more than that. It would be double if filenames had to be either "ALL UPPERCASE" or "all lowercase" but since they can be "Mixed Case", you have a number of permutations equal that's exponentially greater.

What was the point of that post? To show your distaste for MIT? To imply that you're a super-smart badass who doesn't need a measly school like MIT? Get a life.

What's to port? You can already set up ramdisks under Linux, and you can already put your/tmp on a seperate partition (naturally). It's just not done in any distributions.

Well, to be fair, that's not really the same thing, is it? You didn't store the credit-card number, so then I'm assuming that the customer had to enter it again? That's certainly not "one-click".
Yeah, it could've been "one-click", but it wasn't. Where's the prior art?

Hey, in his defense, you don't have to be part of the solution to point out the problem. It's not about pointing fingers, it's about recognizing the problem.

Well, think about it. Whoever read your post, probably knew about the Kuro5hin countdown, and knew that it wasn't actually back up yet. You jumped the gun.

A lot of FTP servers do this. Most of them say, right up front, that you presence is being logged. And why shouldn't they? They're providing you with a service and, in exhange, they're logging your actions. Most of the time this is done purely for security reasons, however if they decided to sell that info, as logged statistical information about their visitor base... I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Very funny, and very true. Why do people expect that online transactions should be any more anonymous than physical ones? Are we so afraid that others should know what we're doing? Privacy is important, but it's not the end-all to life.

I think what he's trying to say is that it's bad that we can't explicitly delete this information, because MS has hidden it from us. Which begs the question, "What else are they hiding from us".
I don't really worry too much about autocomplete though, since it's only a local feature, and if you're worried about privacy on your own machine, then you're a little kooky.
