So instead of my email accounts and my snail mail box being full of spam... These people can come right to my door!
How about the guy that was really upset about that usenet post I made last night. Or some really off-his/her-rocker troll here on slashdot? Isn't this just begging for it. There is already enough media coverage about stalkers starting from the net with info that the people give them themselves. Now it's part of your e-mail address.
Since the whole mouse is the button and is "clicked" by applying pressure... how sensitive is this? Is the sensivity adjustable. I'm sure that i grip the mouse pretty hard at times and wouldn't really want to be clicking everytime that i grab the mouse.
Most disks I buy are 17-22 songs per disc. That's 17-20 bucks. Usually these cds can be had for the $12-$14 dollar area. I think a lower price for zero manufacturing costs and lower sound quality... maybe
emusic.com charges this but... then it's like $8.99 or less for whole cd and they offer their unlimited service too.
i recently started using them for my conscience and with the availability of Napster in question. Usually I only downloaded stuff from napster by bands that I usually buy cds from or regulrly go to shows.
being a musician also i really want to supportthe artsts, not necesarily the record company bigwigs... I'm sure they deserve a cut for some of the things that they do but not nearly as much as they get.
It doesn't seem like it should be that big of a deal with tht money that is floating aorund about hte internet. A browser that simply supports the html, css, and dom standards. Add in support for javascript and a stable JavaVM and you've got a winning product.Doesn't seem that hard since it's already designed.
So far i've Ie and Netscape have gotten close... but not quite close enough for me to even like to use. They've both spent way too much time adding their own "features" that no one uses anyway to make bloated slow products that crash all the damn time.
Just when the world is starting to be weened off microsoft do some people in the open source community decide to REcode windows. There's already plenty duplication of effort out there and this is IMHO almost silly!
It's like trying to make a top fuel funny car out of a Ford Festiva. I'm sure it can be done but why?
If a group is going to do a new OS do a REAL NEW OS. Not the same old crap that has been shoved down our throats. Be had a good idea, and had even better ideas beofre they started (read the BeOS bible). Do something revolutionary, NOT over again. I don't want my computer to act like a file cabinet or have a "desktop." I've never used file cabinets or desks for productivity in the traditional sense. I grew up in the 80's and came of age in the 90's, computers are productive to me. However the current form with it's 1950's metaphors is slow and tired.
I'm sure that these are talented programmers to even attempt a project like this, and while this could seem like a good idea i have to disagree.
As pointed out in another post mp3.com is a great place to start. Also most punk and indie labels that I know of either support haring like napster or are apathetic to it. It's free promotion and most small bands make money from their shows and tours anyway.
Look at your local music scene. There are wonderful bands in garages and little clubs everywhere.
See my ealier post about hte graphical installer;P~
But really, as an example... OpenBSD. Not a fast release cycle. OpenBSD is generally regarded as one of the most secure OSes available. They are to a whopping 2.7! It's not every week that there is a new OpenBSD.
I think that there was some confusion about security and features. A lot of times, new features introduce bugs.
Winamp has a "mini browser" so you can just download and play through that. Nullsoft didn't code a browser... they used the IE object.
I think that is really slick and gecko is a promising start. There is really no reason why we shouldn't standardize on reusable objects. The GNOME/KDE would be a good start.
I have DSL form swbell. I'm mostly satisfied but i couldn't figure out why i wasn't getting an address form dhcp. People in neighboring towns that had dsl just used dhcp and went.
If you are going to use a graphical admin tool you really have go whole hog for it. Personally i think that this is very good. The design is nice and modular, it looks slick, and is fairly easy to use. Linuxconf is ok, but it gets a lot of things wrong. I think that this is a very nice start in the direction that business would like to see and in a way that can keep programmers happy being GPL and easy to extend the features
If a graphical admin tool was needed I usually used webmin and hacked out modules for it. Webmin is very nice but doesn't have the slick feel that this does.
We have ways and means to prevent this (to an extent. gpg/pgp, ssh, ssl for web. This covers most things that people do on the net. These aren't perfect and are still prone to human error but using these simple things can lessen the effects of this.
When i was in high school we got a new computer lab full of Power Macs with DOS cards (these replaced the Apple IIs). The teacher that was hired to do the computer classes was nearly as clueless as most of the students. The only things we did were follow directions on what to click and what to make.
I was able to not do the assignments and instead assist other students with assignments and help the teacher with the lab.
Most of the people that came out of those classes knew nothing about computers. The took an entire semester to learn how to open Office and write a paper with some graphics. There was no mention of how they worked or anything about doing anything else with them.
This was probably a bad experience for most and detrimental at worst. A lot of students probably felt that they had wasted an entire semester doing nothing or something that a typewriter could have done.
Luckily I was in the Gifted program through elementary and got exposed to computers and computing concepts early. Sure we were using Apple IIs and BASIC but alot of that is still with me. Not to mention how to calibrate an Apple joystick for MS FlightSim;)
So, as per my experience computers in the classroom were a waste of time for most of the student body.
Being a musiciana This actually gets me excited. As long as there are no stupid patents and exorbitant fees for using the encryption this would be great for many young bands.
I have spent thousands of dollars on music equipment, travel, etc to play my music and let as many people hear it as possible. That is my driving force. But if I can get some compensation, that is wonderful. That's why bands make CD's and T-shirts so that they can keep making music. I make mp3s of my band available for free. On my website, mp3.com and Napster. But if we could get like $0.25 a song that would be wonderful also.
This would allow people to conveniently listen to my music in their preferred format and would compensate me.
Close attention needs to be paid to the price though. Maybe even lower. But definitely WAY less than if you got them on a CD. And besides for bands on larger record labels... If this goes straight to them that's probably more than they make per song right now!
However due to the way things have been happening recently I'm sure it will be like $10,000 to license the algorithm and another $20,000 for equipment then a $0.10 per use charge or something stupid like that so that major labels will be able to charge you $1.50 per song. If you do the math that is more expnsinve tahn a CD. And No, I do not trust ost record labels, I used to work at a record store.
I've talked about this ever since the whole cloning thing started. Sure, at some point we will be able to make perfect identical humans. Like the perfect soldier, the perfect worker, the perfect drone... And why not, wouldn't it be nice to be able to go to a gene doctor and tell them exactly how you want to be. And change it. Tell the exactly how your child is going to be...
It seems like utopian... get rid of the violent genes and physical handicaps, make everyone 6 feet tall with blue eyes and blonde hair and a perfect physique.
So all of these perfect people will want a significant other, but everyone else in the world will be exactly like them. Isn't that boring? Would you really want to date and marry yourself?
If anyone that posted could have possibly followed the link they would have seen a very nicely layed out screen that resembles PalmOS merged with GNOME. GNOME isn't really that slow and since this is for PDAs I'm fairly certain that it will be stripped down little (e.g. Not including things that are not needed). I think this is wonderful as GNOME is Open Source and has some good standards behind it. It also looks really sweet. By the way... I ran GNOME on a 75Mhz Pentium and it was still faster than Windows. I don't know what these people are doing to make it run so slow but I've never had any major speed issues.
At my office everyone runs Linux, uses GNOME w/sawmill, and StarOffice. Outside of an oocasional issue with the PalmPilots everything is smooth. We push software updates through NFS with a custom script. When we upgrade a major component... we just tell everyone to reboot their machine and the init script updates.
I think the first one will be titled "Metallica" Then "Dr Dre." That would be really nice. Then they could sue me and my band would get a lot of press and they would look like fools!
So instead of my email accounts and my snail mail box being full of spam... These people can come right to my door!

Great.
You sig intrigued me....
int main(void) { int i = 0; i = i + 1; printf("%i\n",i); i = i + 1; printf("%i\n",i); }This compiled and ran exactly as it looked like it would.
While the cube is cool... I'm more anxious about Linux on the daul G4!

Actually $1 per song is pretty expensive...

As a bassist i would have to say yes! ;)
p.s. I play drums to, just playing around

I have a cousin named Meta. I always thought it was a cool name.

Maybe it's because of the lack of a GUI installer? :P~
A good example.

I thought this part of the story on CNN was really funny.
Corporate users aren't affected by the security hole. But home users, running Microsoft's Outlook or Outlook Express e-mail programs, are at risk.
Do no corporations use Outlook???
Well at least no one looked like an idiot for believing the rumor before! That could have been tragic. :P~

Well sbc now uses PPPoE (ppp over ethernet). I'm using rp-pppoe from Roaring Penguin. This is under Linux.
