As a musician that uses mp3.com I feel like I need to say something here. This has let people hear us that would have otherwise never even heard of us. I don't see it as losing money or a waste of our time or resources. The people that listen to us are probably more likely to go to a show when we play close to them, which makes them more likely to by stickers, or shirts or cd's.
I don't see what all these huge bands are whinig about either. Sure there are going to be people that don't buy theur albums. Those people would be just as happy with a cassette or mini disc, either way it's a moral issue rather than a money issue. Almost everyone I know has an old cassette of some metallica album.
And for the money... I know that a indie band can record and produce cd's for 1 - 3 dollars per disc. At shows these are usually sold for 8 - 10 dollars. That's some helacious profit. I mean at worst that's 70%. I know that these major labels are getting a better deal on CD's. The manager at a music store that Ionce worked at told me that it was about 97 cents a CD for a major label. And the honestly want us to pay 15 - 20 dollars and NOT see if we really like the album first?
RedHat and Debian both make it easy to make and install your own packages. At work for the office people we have a redhat kickstart that gets everything off the NFS server and adds in our RPMs so the the office has consistent apps and look. We also have a script that chekcs for updates so that everyone in the office has the same things installed. Most distributions provide you with an easy way to install custom configs.
Yesterday there was an article about the WinCE base PocketPC and everyone kept pointing out how often these crashed, including C|Net
So today the US military decides that they should use these same WinCE systems for the "wired soldier." Does anyone else smell the impending doom here?
So every ISP has to go through everyone's home directories and be absolutely sure that there is nothing illegal or objectionable? So my local ISP that has 3000 customers and 1 sysadmin needs to start doing this hourly? That's rediculous.
I can't believe that the powers that be expect this out of Internet providers. Keeping objectionable material of the net is literally impossible.
Case in point, CPHack, I can still get it, you can still get it. Once it's there it's there.
If things like this continue there will probably NEVER be free (speech) internet access again. Your ISP will have to log EVERY little action you do, every URL that you click, every email that you receive or send.
So yes while AOL can check to see what is on their servers, that is a very daunting task. And completely unreasonable.
Orange book security don't just consider the hardware. It includes the installation, location, and all physical access and environments of the machine. These Certifications are case by case and cost a LOT.
Is this what people think is actually the solution? I am amazed by america everyday.
Can kids not go to their parents anymore? I came from a severly broken home, but I could almost always go to one of my parents with a problem. I have a 10 month old daughter. I hope that she can come to me when she is older.
Personally I don't see kids getting worse, on the contrary I see less violence than when I was in High School 3 years ago. My younger siste is a junior and has had progressivley less problems and talks about progressively fewer fights every year.
I think the major problem that we are facing is completely irresposible media. Sure, Columbine was news worthy, but it was NOT a commentary on America's youth. It's not a commentary on the Internet, it's not a commentary on Games.
I know many people that spend hours per day on the net, play quake, listen to heavy music and wear dark clothing that are as happy as humanly possible. They are just enjoying life. At work we played a Q3A deathmatch last night. I didn't go kill anyone, i didn't even harm animals as I ate my vegetarian dinner. So i listened to some punk rock and went to sleep.
This morning I woke up and was at my job at 7:30 a.m., about an hour and a half early. I didn't kill anyone. I have no real anger in my body right now and I've been on the net all morning.
In high school i would have been a prime target for this. I was a depressed, insomniac, geek/musician that had multi-colored hair in multiple spiky arrangements and a skateboard and a really bad attitude about life. I never went over the edge. But being persecuted like this could have easily pushed the wrong buttons.
There were some earlier posts about how phone service, drivers licenses and other thing aren't anonymous but private. This is NOT at all near what we are talking about here. Having an anonymous options allows for more free use of our rights to free speech.
The web is a lot closer to literature and small news magazines than to a phone service. It's just way more interactive. There are so many good things that have happened because authors were allowed to remain anonymous. Countless pamphlets and articles during the american revolutions. Many unpopular opinions on politics and social life in America. Even as recent as the book Primary Colors.
This is something that we do not want to let slip by like we do so many of our liberties.
Does every just completely ignore the fact that the guy was a common thief. Not just intelletctual property but breaking and entering, stealing chips, selling chips.
It seems like that everywhere I look the welthy are just trying to get wealthier. And they do go to rediculous extremes. As far as copying, umm, why hasn't the record industry thrown a big fit about cd-rw drives? Because it's just not worth the time and effort.
There is a GNOME module for XFce. It's right there on the front page. That makes it GNOME-aware for everyone that has to have it. Off-topic, for GNOME there is also sawmill which uses gtk and has a VERY small footprint. Heck even enlightenment isn't that much of a hog anymore.
Having used Debian for over 3 years I feel that i need to chip in here.
A few little things.
Debian is by volunteers. They do this on their own time fore the entire communtiy.
Debian has had (and currently has) the largest number of packages available in ANY distribution.
If you don't like it, FIX IT! That's what open source is about.
Also the largest part of the freeze being pushed back is the boot floppies. The change from 2.0 to the 2.2 series kernels is quite large. The kernels are of much larger size and even more hardware is supported. The team working on the boot-floppies has to be sure that they will have support for the hardware that it will be installed on.
As far as the unwillingness to recompile a kernel that i have been reading. That's insane! Since most PC's have IDE drives those are compiled into the kernel. Well If i have an all scsi machine I don't want those in my kernel. They are wasting resources. And vice-versa. No distribution has the perfect kernel out of the box. And they shouldn't there are too many compile options and additional drivers.
Debian has been a wonderful distribution to work with and a wonderful project to get involved with. These volunteers are still pounding away at code and makefiles and debian/rules files for all of you, for free and you all are criticizing them for not "shipping on time" It's postings like this that really upset me.
One last little bit. Debian is a rock solid distribution a lot of that is in the "don't release it until it's ready" mentality. I am glad about this. Also security updates are available at security.debian.org So please at rtfm or at least ask around before making blanket statements about packages not being available.
First, i don't see how this will be implemented. Second the http is not the internet. So many people fail to realise this anymore. I barely use web (except for/.;). Are they gonna filter irc, and e-mail too?
To me Linux is already user-friendly. It does what I tell it to do. How i want it to do it. ANd if something messes up i kill it. I've had to reboot Linux 4 times in 2 years. These were actually hardware problems. Yeah you have to edit some rc files, but have you tried regedit on windows. I'll take a text file anyday. My family hears me gripe all the time about how hard windows is to use.
So samba on linux being faster and more reliable then NT is a simple task. I guess Sortin mail for the postal service is a "simple" task also. Or maybe NASA uses Linux because it handles "simple tasks.

Has anyone looked at AlterNIC lately.

I fell asleep and when i woke up... there was an Intel Inside(R) sticker on my forehead. Should i be concerned?
