do you believe that there is no impact on children through the glorification of violence? if you do then i must disagree with you. the history you cited is a good point, as well as your thoughts on alienation. i must agree there. i would have to say, though, that back when kids were toting guns as you suggest, i think that the respect that you had for your parents and others would have been grand enough to not snuff them (sorry bad sentance, look what comp sci does to you!). consequences were to be feared back then, and although fear isn't a good way to raise kids, it certainly keeps them in check.
i still feel that the access to guns nowadays in the states and to a certain degree in canada, is definately enabling to angry kids. hard to shoot someone if you don't have a gun, don't you think?
the canada comment was not chest-thumping, just to let you know that i'm an outsider looking in.
if i'm totally off base then i apologize, but i assume that this move to ban violent movies is an attempt to stem the unreal level of violence that currently resides in america. if it is then i say it's a good step, although it's not going to cure the horrible state you guys are in. attempting to solve youth violence and violence in general by stopping violent movies is not giving the issue enough credit. there are so many factors that cause this type of mental state. you guys might want to start addressing guns, family lives, media coverage of crime and so forth. such an odd society, many great advances, yet a kid can get shot in school. That idea, of guns in school, is so wrong that i can't stress it enough. school is a place to be safe, to learn, to go through childhood. that can't happen if some lunatic who hates his parents and has access to weapons besides that your life isn't worth living.
easily the best way to find a girl or boy is thru friends. my current girl was a friend of my housemate's, and she showed up at the house on a frequent basis. we got to know each other slowly and now we're a couple.
i recommend living with/hanging out with non-geeks as well as geeks.
i find that geeks boys tend to sync better with non-geek girls. my comp sci crew all are dating non-geeks.
a sense of humour has been the attribute that girls comment on the most.
to support insectk's comment, girls tend to shy away from guys that are on the prowl, just be respectful and she'll be more open to conversation.
good luck all, being lonely is hard, we've all been there.
my housemate (whose an idiot) loves the show, thinks it is incredible. to be fair, i sat down and watched it. it's so cheesy and predictable, really below the intelligence level of most geeks i would think.
last semester worked on an AI project for 61 hours, with only minor sleep. my eyes were fine, whereas my buddy had a brutal headache. his 19in crt had done him in.
even tho i've had my IBM T86 for 6 months now, i'm still impressed how good it looks.
if you can afford one, don't hesitate, go an get one. it'll be worth the money. paid $4000 (canadian) for mine with not a single regret.

i wish i had my $12(CAN) back for that piece of trash....

others might object tho.

actually, my summer job paid about 20 grand... so i figured that since i stare at my monitor all day long i'd do my eyes a favour.
...is super easy on the eyes.
