i work at one of canada's banks, at the corporate university. another comp sci guy and i were successful in moving most of our servers (~25) from NT to linux or back to solaris (bank *loves* solaris).
now we're attempting to deploy linux on 20% of the desktops (~10 people).
we've already realized that we'll need to cram VMware on some of them (flash developers) but i consider this just a transition period. hopefully things will go well and we can divert some upkeep dollars to R&D...
Actually, Sony will be releasing a 40 GB hard drive, and ethernet device for the PS2; in addition to a keyboard, and optional monitor. Hell, they've even got that Linux release. Proxy behind your favor UNIX flavor, and go!
gah!!! excellent... i know that the broadband stuff has been rolled out in japan, with FF11 coming to really make it blow up...
didn't know that the drive was going to be 40gigs...
this is a great idea... we implemented XP for our site design... although using J2EE, there is a separatation between presentation layer and logic layer, it turned out that the design of the site worked better when a "holistic" approach was taken... one java developer and one design pro
of course explaining j2ee methodology to artsies was an exercise in patience... hahah;)
..although i picked the cheapest form of delivery so it won't be here for a bit more time...
i read thru the sample chapter [here] it's all about particle physics. i was quite impressive, i enjoy the *conversational* style that most o'reilly books have.
i implemented all of the examples in java using java3d.
true enough, but the rumormongers turned that into *digital-hub/DVD-R/laser gun/etc* and whet people's appetite for an all encompassing be-all-end-all device...
rumors are killing apple... while it's true, most people tend to ignore them (you and me both), too many believe them. for example, the iPod. it was hyped-up so much that when people actually saw it, it was a let down, even tho it's a great piece of hardware (a bit costly, but cool)...
i hope the lcdMac comes out, then people will keep quiet... well, at least until some other nutzo rumor comes out.
at work i use NT and at home OS X. I find it to be extremely handy for carrying source code to and from work.
incidentally, OS X.1 added support for the IBM keydrive.
additionally, i think diskonkey make all of the IBM keys, although diskonkey come in 128 meg versions, and i only see 8 meg ones on IBM's site.
IHMO, i think this situation is like all that involve multiple parts... everything plays a part in the experience...
for example, i don't feel that the sound i get of of my TiBook speakers when listening to a cd is any better than listening to 160kbps mp3s. now if you changed the speakers, you would definately hear all the subtle nuances on the CD that you miss on the mp3.
so, good source + good delivery = good experience.
just because you have top-end speakers, doesn't mean that you can salvage 96kbps mp3s.
"OS X 10.1 will be available in stores this Saturday and a free upgrade for 10.0.x owners will be available in stores at no charge. As expected you can also order a CD containing the update for $19.99."

what differentiates the iPod from a host of other less expensive alternatives?
size, speed, industrial design, interface design, battery life...
you don't agree?

breakthroughs are on a sliding scale maybe...
