Freedom of speech goes both ways. Someone can say what they like but when someone disagrees to it they have right of reply.
To be fair the more people coding the better although some people have neither the time or the motivation to code.

  2. Weird Al... on Larry Wall == Weird Al! · · Score: 1

I'm sure Weird Al done the following parodies:
A song sounding like the Windows 95 'Start Me Up' advert criticising the reliability of Windows 95 and a parody of Jingle Bell's that went:
Microsoft, Microsoft, bloatware all the way.

So he does certainly have some interest in computers and by the sounds of it he doesn't particularly like Microsoft and therefore probably likes open source. Perl is open source - so anything's possible!

  3. We don't need no steenkin' bureaucracies. on The Power of Openness · · Score: 1

These things aren't worth even worrying about. If you believe they're a good thing then you can support them but if you think it's a bad idea just ignore them and carry on as normal.
As open source is open there's no danger of one person or organisation taking control if the majority think it's a bad idea and even if the majority think it's a good idea the minority can just take the code and carry on trying to prove the majority wrong.
It's freedom. People are allowed to do with the code what they want.

You didn't get it. LiteStep is for Windows which replaces the standard Windows shell and gives it a look similar to Afterstep and WindowMaker.
Not that I've tried it. I don't use Windows but if I did I'd probably give it a go.

  7. THERE AREN'T ENOUGH PEOPLE IN MY AREA. on Important Windows Refund Day co-ordination News · · Score: 1

If they're really aren't enough people in your area (remember it doesn't have to just be Linux users - any user who has ditched their pre-installed MS-OS, even NT users who have decided they didn't want Windows 95/8 on their machine) then just go it alone (or with the few that are there). Every single person who asks for a refund on Monday are helping get the message across.

Personally I can't do anything. I don't have any MS licences. In fact my PC is MS free. I bought it from an independent supplier and asked for NO OS. I insisted on it. This was even before the time Linux was popular. Only a few people had heard of it and linux.org was a site hosted on a modem with all its links to offsite resources.

  8. Rubbish download section on C|Net posts Special Report LINUX coverage · · Score: 1

The section on Linux downloads was totally inconsistant and likely to confuse the newcomer. It looks like someone with very little Linux knowledge put them links together.
e.g. some apps say download for x windows (yes I know X Windows is an incorrect term too) while others just say download implying they can be run from the console rather than just through X.

The section with the window managers is also incorrect and confusing.

If they want to make a useful resource for newcomers they should at least put the effort in and use correct terminology and consistency.

  12. Freeware? on Dell Officially Supporting Linux? · · Score: 1

It's annoying how people who write these article keep referring to Linux as 'freeware'. It doesn't mean the same as 'Free Software' or 'Open Source' it simply means software that costs nothing.
It is particularly incorrect as many people pay for Linux (whether it's a few $$$ for a cheap CD or a full distribution).

The use of the word freeware probably puts a lot of corporations off the idea of using Linux.

Every person who uses the term 'freeware' when referring to Linux should be politely emailed suggesting the correct terms to use (no offensive flaming, just constructive criticism).

  13. Been on before on LWN Year in Review · · Score: 2

Like someone said before. Slashdot have already posted this article a while back. My guessing is the contributors to slashdot don't read their site often enough.
But that's a good thing as if they did it would just die becasue they'd spend so long reading they wouldn't update it, people would then stop reading, etc, etc - so a few repeated articles is worthwhile as long as CmdrTaco, Sengan, Hemos, etc don't get addicted to their site and start reading it.
After all /. is the No. 1 way of wasting time when you should be doing something else.
Seriously though - this is a great site!

  14. Freshmeat on A Bit About Freshmeat · · Score: 1

Unfortunately I've never had time to see the new layout as he has taken the site down for the moment due to the flames. I must admit I don't visit freshmeat as much as I should and often just use the summary links on slashdot to see if there's any new releases I'm interested in and I also use freshmeat to search for any software I want to download.

Whatever form it takes it provides an extremely useful service and I'm sure this new look never removed any of the features the previous site had and perhaps added more functionality.

Often once you're used to one layout it takes a while to adapt to the change but it's best to give it time before complaining and never be abusive just becasue *you* don't like it. There'll be many others who do like it so OK comment but don't be unreasonable.

I think taking down freshmeat was a bad idea though because there is a possibility that is what the flamers really wanted and in effect giving into them although the volume of email being generated may have meant having to bring down the site just to curb the flow of email.
