Maybe they didn't use plenum cable, and the University (actually, the semi-private company that runs the dorms, most likely...) may really be concerned about the fire hazard (supposedly) posed by cable in airspaces. That would justify their cracking down on the case. What they should do now, (IMNOHO) drag it to court, get a LOT of buzz, and then drop it, turning the kids loose quietly.
(What'll probably happen is the kids copping a plea to a violation and paying a fine, call it $500.00...)
MP3's enable the "shareware" model of music distribution. If the ultimate distillation of the shareware software distribution model is something like Linux, then it's likely that a real "shareware" music market could grow!
I got a Hughes Internet account when I went away on vacation... 19.00 a month/unlimited, POP's everywhere I was going.. (a little sparse in upstate NY, but that's where my "HOME" isp is at...)
Of course, you can't go wrong with the classics, Heinlein, Bradbury, Clarke, LeGuin, etc... Keep a bunch around for culture...
Remember to counter-program Heinlein's Starship Troopers with Harrison's Bill The Galactic Hero series to balance out viewpoints.
The Adventures of The Stainless Steel Rat by Harrison should be on the bookshelf...
Hmmm... Some of Keith Laumer's BOLO stories, and the franchised storiess...
Anything by Robert Forward,
Everything by Larry Niven, (Dream Park...)
Most Jerry Pournelle,
David Brin -- Uplift Novels... The Postman (Don't let Kevin Costner's movie get in the way...)
Regarding Terry Pratchett, The out-of-print early discworld novels are being reprinted. I understand that the first (?) (The Colour of Magic) is due out next month (I Think!), as well as the paperback release of The Last Continent.
I need to build bookshelves and get these books out of the boxes I'm storing them in!!!
Nope. Wrongo... It's a hobby. My investment in taping gear, and PA gear is an investment in my hobby. If I, at the root, do the recording for personal gratification, without regard for profit, why should anyone take the product of my effort and love and reduce it to a mere commercial SKU?
>i am one of the people that work on deadabase and >i can assure everyone that we definatly do not >make a profit from our website.
MAKING a profit is totally different from a for-profit operation. I saw a banner ad, that violates the "NON-COMMERCIAL, HOME-USE ONLY" terms of the joint copyright license.
I'm interested to see if GDP would mind an unrelated ftp site? Probably not.

That's the crux of the matter, isn't it...

Hmmm....
Last time I checked (about 4 years ago now! Sheesh, time flies...) Key Bank ran the whole branch shebang on OS/2.
Could continue to be profitable for a LONG time in vertical market applications like that!

Off the top of my head...

Your assumption being that without fraud, Visa would lower our bills. HAH! Fat Chance of *THAT* happening!

I'm sure they are pleased... All that "Special" training, and military hardware gets to be used!
DSN: Rip off of the pitched JMS's B5 idea...
Yeah, but Terry Farrell's got no taste... She slept with Ralph Cirella(sp?) -- they guy who washes Howard Stern's underwear....
SSIA
IMHO, the guy was a petty theif and deserved what he got.
NO-ONE deserves to have the Feds do a number on them.
Bill of Rights My Hairy White Ass...
Another recommendation for Lone-Tar. It's beautiful.

Why, DMB house mix usually is so overcompressed it's not worth recording...

But who really cares, MP3 blows.
