I didn't read anything about crew problems in that article. It seems to me that they are dealing with shitty Russian equipment and support. The idea of an 'international' space station is stupid and its going to get some of our (US) guys killed eventually. Even with its faults NASA is still the best at this stuff and it is insanity to put our people at the mercy of equipment that we didn't design and cannot control.
when applied correctly. People seem to be missing the distinction between publicly funded internet access like Libraries and Schools, and private access to the internet. Any attempt to filter private access should be stopped quickly (ala AlGore's goofy proposals), but reasonable filtering on Libraries and Schools should be implemented.
If you want unrestricted access to the net, get your own connection and pay for it! Do not force me to pay for your porn viewing, sex chatting, etc. Computers are cheap, internet access can be free in alot of areas, so quit whining about how they want to filter you.
Yes, filters are not perfect, but they are better than nothing, and better ones will come along eventually. If you find something that shouldn't have been filtered, bring it to the attention of the sysadmin -- or work on an open filtering specification, unlike the closed ones that they are currently using.
This is a personal liberty issue, and if you are being subsidized by the rest of us taxpayers you are going to have restrictions placed on your liberty. If you don't like it, use the free market and sign up with your local ISP, but please quit complaining about how they want to filter your Library connection. You don't own it and you don't pay for it, therefore you don't control it.
They interviewed the wrong people. Eric Raymond has pretty much covered what a Hacker is in his Hacker Howto FAQ and in the Jargon file.
This argument persists because people seem to have a hard time accepting the fact that words mean things. When they don't accept the real definition of a word they attempt to coopt it for their own purposes.
Josh Centers started the Hacker Anti-Defamation League a couple of years ago to try to counteract the media's mis-use of Hacker, but the project has never really taken off.
Remember that just because a bunch of people believe something doesn't make it true.
I'd say that their use of hacker in this article is alot closer to the normal use in the media to describe every little script weenie or port scanner. At least this guy wrote some code to try to accomplish his goal.
It was pretty dumb not to randomize the information and at least lookup real zipcodes from a database.
As for checking for perl scripts, it probably looks for the browser type in the header. I'd be he and alot of others will have success at hacking this voting system next year.
They are idiots if they use online voting to make any real decisions anyway!
People need to remember that this is not the Federal Governments job. They have been sticking their fingers into too many pies over the last few (well, 40 or 50) years. Its time that people wake up and stop allowing their rights to abrigated by an intrusive Federal Government that mandates to everyone how you will act, think, and feel concerning all subjects.
I cannot believe the comments that I am reading - re: Standards are good - Don't you realize what this is? It is a gigantic infringement on our 1st Amendment rights, not to mention the involvement of a burdensom federal bureaucracy in the fastest growing economic force in the world. Actions like these stifle economic growth, not encourage it.
Yes, its a good thing to make your HTML easy to use by everyone (you hit more markets by doing this, more customers and more money) BUT IT ISN'T THE FED'S BUSINESS how I design my webpages.
If there are enough handicapped users out there then that should create a great market for handicapped friendly webpages. You could even go so far as to create an organization that tests and awards a 'handicapped friendly' logo to pages that are handicapped friendly. But don't go and use the force (yes, force, as in the barrel of a gun or trigger of a bomb) of Government to make everyone else comply with your own personal adjenda or beliefs. Use the free market. It has been shown to work wonders.
The Castlewood Orb drive is a 2.2G removable, $199 for IDE and SCSI interface, $30 per cart. It kinda works with Linux (see www.tatoosh.com/linuxorb), I've had mixed success with mine so far.
ESR is scheduled to appear on the Peter Weissbach show this afternoon, sometime between 3pm and 6pm Pacific time (sorry, I haven't heard a more exact time).
Weissbach is carried on KVI 570AM in Seattle, which is also available over the net at www.kvi.com (but you have to be using Microsloth Media Player to hear it).

And I'll think of Mike every time I use it. His work and memory will live on for a really long time.

There is an organization to combat this misuse of 'hacker', the luggage has been known about for quite a while. Take a look at:
The Hacker Anti-Defamation League

I use lynx to read it myself. Loads a hell of a lot faster!
