I actually thought he did a good job at the end too... The calm, subdued (spelling?) power is great IMO... He comes across as very confident to me, which is just how I think he should have been. Anything more would have been obnoxious IMO...

  3. Re:Give the guys some slack, okay? on Linux Unreal Tournament Files Released · · Score: 1

That analogy doesn't really work at all. In the UT case, buying the box lets you run it just fine on linux. In the table/chair analogy, you can't get a chair out of a table. If the analogy were more correct, it would be "I went to a store that sells tables with a detachable back that you can put on it to have it function as a chair. I have to send away for the attachment, which is free. Even so, I refused to buy the table because they didn't provide the back right away." Even that analogy is weak, because it would cost more to provide a physical alternative than just some space on a cd. It's better to buy the game (if you like it) and email gt saying you'd like to see linux binaries included in the future, and that you're a happy linux user.

    Or something.

  5. What is your purpose when you make a game? on Ask John Carmack About Quake - or Anything Else · · Score: 1

I'm just curious, what is your game making 'approach'? Let me clarify:

Most ID games I play have a near flawless engine, and very simple but effective gameplay rules. They're not 'complex' usually. Don't take that the wrong way though, but most ID games put emphasis on action, not story. Is this because you feel that's the most fun kind of game to play, or because you prefer to focus on the game engine, or something completely different?

Whatever you do, it works :)

  6. Re:His questions needs a different answer. on Recommended Hardware for Streaming MP3 Radio Stations? · · Score: 1

Icecast and shoutcast can very easily be used 'live' afaik. With shoutcast and winamp, the cpu time used is the same as for a normal playlisted mp3 (since winamp+shoutcast re-encodes all streams, even if they stay at the same bitrate as the original file). Icecast, however, will require more cpu time, since icecast doesn't re-encode a file if it's being broadcast at the same bitrate as the source file. Either way, both will handle a live stream fine.

Remember though that the lifespan of each 'generation' on a computer is much much much much shorter than real life. I think the article said it took 4800 generations to distinguish between the 2 tones... 4800 generations in humans would take 4800 x 25 years (25 is just an estimate of the span between generations... no clue how long it really takes) or 120,000 years... that's probably way off, but it illustrates the point I think.

Exactly. The important difference here is that you don't see a story on slashdot about the invention of new shackles that bind with twice the strength and half the weight of conventional shackles! Why? Because people don't care. I think this story is interesting on a technical note, but I don't see why paranoia should enter into it.

  9. Remove them? how? on Ender's Shadow · · Score: 1

I don't think Peter and Valentine could be removed... The whole Locke and Demosthenese thing aside, Peter and Valentine provide almost all the motivation for what Ender does. Ender constantly checks himself against Peter. And when Ender loses faith, it's a visit from Valentine that brings him back. And to a lesser extent, Peter becoming the Hegemony is part of the reason why Ender can't return Earth. And it needs to be explained how Peter comes to power somehow. I think the movie would have some pretty big holes in Ender's character if Peter + Valentine were removed.
