a recent damning example, Gates quoted in the NYTimes:
"When they invented radial tires, they should have shot the guy," he said. "The whole industry went through a crisis, because it took nine years to squeeze out the extra factory capacity, because the tires lasted longer."
ok let's ignore his overtly violent metaphor. focus instead on how he values innovation
that saves lives and money.

It's currently delivering about 150GB daily by torrent.
I tried searching for "draves" with the new msn search. It gives rather different results from all other search engines. My brother works for microsoft and has a home page hosted on their site. My home page is draves.org.
Google, yahoo, altavista, dogpile, and lycos all return my page as #1 and my brother's page at microsoft as #4, #13, or greater than #30. MSN returns my brother's page as #1 and mine as #4.
What do you make of that (besides that i'm an egoist)? I would conclude that MSN search inflates the ranking of results from microsoft.com.
some dot com remnant whose stock as gone up 300% in the past year. they didn't hype the chip... slashdot did. transmeta was very secretive, remember? compared to a pentium M the efficeon is smaller because it has an integrated northbridge. and it gets by on fewer watts.
I have a Crusoe based Fujitsu P2110 and it's been great.... fast enough to do video production even. But I carry it with me everywhere and it's starting to wear out. This looks like the perfect replacement!

It gets better after the attack on SETI.
Read Aliens cause Global Warming.
If you truly believe that SCO is full
of shit (and i certainly do) you should
short their stock. They know their case
is crap and they plan on losing, but in
the meantime their stock has gone up 10x
and the insiders and their buddies are
cashing out and will laugh all the way
to the bank after they lose in court.
Your only revenge is to make a few bucks
yourself from the slimeballs who support this
company. Short SCOX now!!
But first a question:
tell me how to mod anything!
I don't know why but I no longer have the menu
used to moderate anything. I have positive karma...
Instead of the funny/interesting/stupid menu, i have
something where i can make friend/foe choice.
forget that!
110M plus shares
leave lock-out, but volume is only 30M,
so the insiders in fact have decided to hold
onto almost all their stock in a risky startup
in unstable financial times. If that doesn't
indicate fanatical enthusiasm by the insiders i don't know
what does. Only an idiot wouldn't diversify.
In light of the Toshiba and RLX/IBM announcements,
I would say Transmeta's future is very bright
indeed. I would take this opportunity to buy
if i hadn't already. It's the last opportunity
before the 5800 comes out and things really
start smoking (to use a bad metaphor).
Or do something more beautiful:
electric sheep is a distributed screen-saver
that produces and displays artistic,
abstract animations
with your spare cycles. It's open source and
runs on Linux.
only if you get your news from slashdot, an
organzation that generated the upside hype,
then blamed transmeta for not delivering on it,
and has now led the backlash.
where was slashdot when the NEC machine was
released (3lbs 11 hours 10.4" screen
600mhz crusoe)? how bout when hitachi, fujitsu, and merilus
announced they would come out with machines?
when microsoft and aol showed machines at comdex?
slashdot, epitomized by losers such as yourself,
delivers hot air only. people willing to make a
commitment with real money showed how they think
on the street today. short the stock or shut up.
These systems are only marketed and sold be GE,
the company behind the technology and manufacturing is Plug Power,
a publicly traded company (ie you can invest).
The other leading fuel cell company is Ballard Power,
also available on nasdaq. Plug is aimed at the
home market, and ballard at automobiles (think
about the california zero emissions regulations).
Of course the statement "information wants..." is not literally true, this isn't news. Petreley misses the point when he
reminds us that according to the current law,
copying music and software is illegal. The
interesting question is why is it illegal? How can society work with reduced
or eliminated copyright and patent laws? Computer and networking technology will continue to make
the current system less and less workable.
You can publish all the free music you want,
but if the network effect makes a patented
protocol into an essential part of the infrastructure, then we have a problem.
information is free.
the only question is,
are you?
Bad. Think of how much money this is going to cost. Think of how many children could be educated with that money. Think how much medicine could be bought instead.

boring! try Electric Sheep instead...
Open source art that has been curated onto MoMA.org and was chosen as the graphical identity for the whole siggraph conference this year:
Dreams in High Fidelity
as recently featured on makezine.
Try Apophysis-J and Electric Sheep for getting kids into math and evolution through fun imagery.
if either of these systems is so effective, then
the investment will be payed off by finding more
oil more cheaply. no protection racket is needed.
necessity is the mother of invention.

A few weeks ago on the anniversary of Trinity a giant fire/explosion/mushroom cloud was recreated on the same location: SIMNUKE.

The Identity Commons is also working on the same problem, but they have taken a more useful approach than the Liberty Alliance.
try this for something with more substance:

better yet run electric sheep, the distributed screen saver that evolves fractal life forms (it's pretty!).
