  1. Advantages... on Compaq's Laptop/Desktop Concepts · · Score: 1

One of the nice things about laptops is their portability. (Duh, I guess.) If Compaq can come out with a desktop that's got nearly the portability/small form factor of a laptop as well as most of the power of a desktop (and a full keyboard) then really, what's not to like?

The better Open Source starts looking to people who are capable of using it. It's not yet at the level where secretaries/grandmas can use it, and although I sincerely hope that it reaches that level soon, there's no reason to wish misery on the majority of computer users.

I disagree with your assumption that anyone can compile their own binary. Any sufficiently experienced UN*X user can, of course. However, you have to admit that it's nowhere near as easy as installing a package.

If Linux is indeed bent upon Total World Domination, then these sorts of things will have to be taken into consideration; end users are, for the most part, sure to run away screaming from such things.

Wow. What a wonderful way to ensure that the FBI keeps monitoring traffic to the site. Not to mention the likelyhood that you'll put the IMC in a difficult position, and posibly force them to delete posts. Bravo.

  13. Constitutional? on FBI Seeks 2 Days Of IndyMedia Traffic Log · · Score: 1

This is amazing; the FBI seems to be trying to correlate internet news activity with criminal actions. Besides being illogical, it's got to be unconstitutional -- especially the part of the order where they ordered the IMC not to divulge the existence of the order. That's prior restraint, and it's a big no-no.

Besides that, what did the FBI seriously hope to gain from this? Is it just scare tactics, or are they honestly going to track down users by IPs?

Blogger, and other such easy-to-use services, are making journal publishing much easier and more convenient than it had been, and the wealth of bloggish material now available on the Internet is testament to that.

What's really nice about blogs is that they make the Internet a more personal place. Rather than reading someone's list of, I don't know, favourite video games, we can read their diary. This is a direction that I'd really like to see the Net move in.
