That aside, sure, Trump has nothing to do with Go (as long as Go exclusively generates results that match Trumps alternate reality), but the commenter used it as an example. He should have picked something else, like the US qualifying for the World Cup.

I do agree that the Democrats in their current constellation have the unique quality to screw this up.

Same was said about the total disaster of a president: Reagan. Massive deficit spending, double digit unemployment, tax cuts only for the rich, almost starting a nuclear war...and yet he easily won a second term. We are at a point where either end of the spectrum rather votes for a groper and child molester as long as the candidate of the other side doesn't get in. As far as Go is concerned...how many more buggy and convoluted programming languages do we need? I'm not saying let's all go back and code exclusively in Plankalkül, but there isn't anything that Go solves so tremendously better than any of the dozen other modern programming languages.

Those idiots were drinking the Fox "News" cool aid. It is not a surprise. Put billionaires and industry shills into power and those are the results you get. No surprise that the only companies complaining are those who would be impacted the most. Google will lose a lot of revenue when folks have to pay up to watch cat videos on YouTube or when using Google office apps becomes cost prohibitive. Also, all those companies that boom due to cable cutters signing up for their service will havea tough time.
The only hope here is that the states follow through and start building their own Internet infrastructure. Not that state governments are any less subject to bribes and kickbacks, but it is much harder to dish out money to 50 entities than just one.
In all fairness, ISPs do have a point. They have to invest into their infrastructure in a market where asking for higher access fees is a no go. The only beneficiaries of those investments are other companies. Google, Amazon, Netflix and others would be significantly smaller and less powerful if they had to pay up for the bigger pipes that support their at times even free services. Some traffic shaping needs to be allowed, not all Internet traffic needs to be traveling with the same priority. That traffic shaping has to be consistent across the board and be specific to type of traffic regardless of source and destination. But why compromise when you have reckless filthy rich folks calling the shots with a spineless Congress more interested in keeping sex scandals under the covers.

Some places do that, either permanently or only when no movement is detected in the vicinity. I spent some time in a small village in Germany and after 11 PM the street lights were turned off except at intersections. That saved a lot of electricity and money. Several places now have street lights with motion detectors so that they only turn on if a pedestrian or a car comes along. That is a good compromise to save power without sacrificing safety and security. Another option is to dim the lights down when no movement is detected.

There needs to be some middle ground. Preserving the "dumb pipe" is not the best solution. Traffic shaping helps to make it more likely that things like VoIP packets or video streams are getting preferred treatment. Stuff like email or other not time sensitive traffic should get second tier treatment. That does not mean preventing transfer, but at a lower speed (priority). Although the Internet was designed as such, there is really no reason to treat everything the same. Other example: file downloads. Sure, we want to get the stuff fast, but does 10 seconds more really impact user experience that negatively? I gladly take that delay over having to pay for watching a cat video on YouTube.

Paywalling content is OK. What is not OK is paywalling content and after paying for it getting plastered with advertisement as it is typically the case. Sadly, often times is the content then not worth the money paid. There is a reason why established media companies have problems.
At issue here is that the paywalling will shift from the content creators and content providers to companies who provide the connection, but monetize access. It is essentially a drastic Internet access fee increase while keeping the ad slogans of 9.99$ Internet plans alive.
