The Palm expansion slot supports MMC and SD which includes SDIO cards. There isn't anything available yet, but is capable of everything the springboard slot is in a much smaller package.
The M500 compare more with the Visor Platinum or the upcoming Edge than the Deluxe.

Square LCD's many times are off the shelf parts. Any WinCE device you look at will have a custom LCD that is much more expensive.
