    Yes, if you wait to start the clock when the first human steps foot on Mars. But the clock has been running for a while, and robots have a big head start in results.

    Just give them a new battery. Apple customers typically buy the next model long before the battery wears out, so that's not a problem.

    how do you get away from the "I nicked my iPhone dropping it out of my car, let me bend it and get a new one" crowd?

    1. Examine old phone carefully for damage
    2. Damage the new phone in the same way (minus the bend), before handing it to the customer.

    Not likely. Modern LED fixtures are better designed to aim the light down to the street, they are often dimmable so they can be dimmed down during the really dark hours.

    There's no guarantee that the bulb that is sold for a high price isn't actually the same piece of cheap shit inside, just sold for a greater profit.

    The problem is that the lifespan of a LED/CFL bulb depends on temperature, hours/day, and how many times it's switched on. A simple date wouldn't be able to capture all those variables.

    I've tried every brand of CFL, including the expensive ones, and it's hit or miss. I've had several expensive name brand CFLs (e.g. Philips) fail within a year.

    CFL have electrodes at the end of the tube, which will fail over time. You can tell by the fact that the ends of the tube start to get black.

    A refrigerator just needs some electricity. Whether that is provided by something alive or not doesn't matter. The sun wasn't designed and built by something alive, and yet it provides energy for plenty of life forms on Earth.

    I didn't state a definition.

    Yet both will burn out and extinguish themselves, and neither can evolve in a Darwinian sense.

    Unfit replicators will die out. That's one aspect of evolution, and it happens all the time. I wouldn't classify fire as a molecular replicator, by the way.

    There are already satellites with good camera's orbiting Mars, so it's smarter to allocate the mass budget of a new orbiter to different types of sensors, rather than clones of stuff we already have.

    Evolution happens as soon as you have a simple molecule that can replicate itself, or at least catalyse some reaction that leads to more copies of itself. If your definition of life does not include self-replicating molecules, then there was evolution before life.
