You see, the telecos have convinced (see: bribed) many municipalities into signing deals which prevent any competitor from moving in
Sounds like a free market that allows companies to convince/bribe people into signing exclusive deals. It sounds like you want a more regulated market in which such exclusive deals are prohibited ?
I have a conviction that there are no such bunnies, due to lack of atmosphere.
They take oxygen out of the soil, of course.
there is a gigantic conceptual difference between "absence of evidence of X" and "evidence of absence of X"
I understand that. But in daily practice, many people don't make the distinction for things that are completely without reason, such as bunnies on the moon, or gods. They will happily say things like: "Yes, I'm sure we're out of beer, I just looked in the fridge a minute ago", without giving any consideration to the fact that a bottle may just have popped in there through a wormhole.
There's not much of a difference, actually. Do you have an absence of belief for bunnies hopping on the far side of the moon, or a conviction that there are no such bunnies ?
Human brains were shaped by evolution to be better survival machines. Consciousness just happened as a result. I don't think any special sauce is required.
All the article does is highlight a few carefully selected weather stations where the temperature records have been adjusted. It doesn't explain why the adjustments were incorrect. It also doesn't show what the unadjusted temperature record would look like if you took all the station data.
What exactly is the relevance of CO2 concentration of exhaled breath ?
Global warming is a great thing - just ask Canada, especially the places that are currently -40 degrees.
The History channel will be happy to learn that they can start planning a few years of Mud Road Truckers, after the permafrost melts.
Don't you already operate the phone with your hand?
Most people have more than the average number of hands.
Even if you only take the metro areas, the US is still far behind.

Corn syrup is pretty much equivalent to sugar for our bodies.
And then it gets fixed right away ?
What do you do when some complex, external code has a bug ?

How do we know this man Jesus wasn't just some nutcase ?
Our DSL companies have to compete with cable, so there's good incentive to keep improving the local loops.
I pay a fixed monthly amount, plus a variable cost per minute of calling.
The electricity required is quite small. Maybe a few kWh/month per subscriber. One dollar should cover that.
The difference is that you pay for the pipe, and not the data itself. The water company doesn't charge you for the pipe, they charge the water.
Most Christian faiths believe the soul enters the body at the moment of conception
You mean when the Holy Bootloader is first flashed into the system ?
Who is to say that a AI does not have a soul?
On several occasions I have seen a wisp of blue smoke come out of electronic components as they were dying.
There's not much of a difference, actually. Do you have an absence of belief for bunnies hopping on the far side of the moon, or a conviction that there are no such bunnies ?

If we can perfectly simulate a brain, would that have some type of different rights?
It will have the rights that others choose to give it, or that can claim for itself. Just like us.
how the hell would you save something with no persistence beyond death?
With the holy backup tape ?
The point of all religion is power. The story about souls is just a good way to get people to die for you in battle.
"And God created the Adam. But the Adam was not very successful, partly because of early production problems."

one of the things you believe is that none of your beliefs were influenced by anyone with a motive.
Of course they were. Just like your beliefs. That in itself doesn't help us determine which are true, though.
Funny. Very few governments seem to be willing to do anything except sit on their asses.

Luckily, somebody else did that: http://judithcurry.com/2015/02...
