    In the case of Bayer's aspirin, it's probably purely brand name loyalty that keep sales going. It's hard to do that with a new drug.

    The investment to put the copper into place was done years ago for POTS purposes. And maintenance cost have probably gone down, because I used to be connected through ~2 miles of copper pair, and now it's about a quarter mile.

    Broadband doesn't have to require massive investments. I have 52 Mbps VDSL2 over the same old copper pair that's been in the ground for the better part of a century. At the end of the street, there's a concentrator that takes hundreds of copper pairs and bundles them on a single fiber. So, the investment is quite modest. It did not involve digging trenches in my street.

    Theoretically, you also give them the proper e-mail address when you open the account.

    They do exist, they're called keyservers.

    Of course, if you enter the wrong e-mail address, you'll encrypt it with the wrong public key.

    After you log into the HTTPS website with your username, password, and possibly a security token, we can assume you are the intended recipient. Pretty standard for internet banking.

    I know about OpenPGP, but it's hardly an established infrastructure. I bet your grandma doesn't use it.

    Public keys ? There is no established infrastructure for public key encryption of e-mail.

    The point is that a simple "eat less" doesn't help people who don't know how to do that. It's like telling a clinically depressed person to "cheer up". In order to help them, you have to understand what it is that makes them eat too much, and offer a strategy to combat that. That's what the coach does when he explains his view on *how* to beat the other team. And a strategy that works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the other.

    The hoarding mechanism is mostly a myth, and whatever is left of it, is mostly due to the fact that a lighter body requires less energy & muscles to move around.

    They believe in models they don't understand and couldn't even be specific about which of the models they believe in.

    The deniers don't understand the models any better. It's the same faith working here, but in the opposite direction. Now, if you want to discuss the actual scientists, it's a different matter.

    No, but reducing dieting to just the laws of thermodynamics makes a mockery out of the whole thing. It's like the Seahawks coach explaining that the secret to beating the Patriots is to score more points than them. While technically true, it doesn't help anybody.

    Personally, i think kids not vaccinated for deadly or dehabilitating diseases should be bared from attending public schools

    Why just schools ? Can't they infect other kids while in a movie theatre, playground, or the local fast food restaurant ?

    Herd immunity is math. If the mean infection rate is greater than 1, the infection is likely to spread. The mean infection rate is a function of vaccine effectiveness and percentage of vaccinated children.

    Basic science education should be mandatory. Advanced science education should be optional and voluntary. If that results in a skewed representation in the advanced classes, that's not necessarily a problem that needs to be fixed.

    On the contrary, helping people to succeed does not necessarily mean that others do not succeed.

    Helping more people to succeed often means lowering the bar. And that makes the really talented ones lazy and bored.
