    freenet filters it out with moderation. you cant "pump" stuff into freenet..the only thing you will be pumping is going to stay on your machines drive....you dont know how it works, obviously. please read the FAQ and then try posting something which makes more sense. and besides, you cant have duplicate names on freenet but you can have it on napster obviously.

    trust the users who bitch. when i want to know how a piece of software or hardware performs i go to google and search for " problems". it rarely fails to give me a good idea of how well the software/hardware works.

    offtopic but yeah..there was an effort to start a debian gnu/bsd..i believe its died or in secret for now. i remember seeing a few webpages but the BSD guys attacked the project initiators fairly viciously and it died. it was hosted at some university from what i recall. again this is IMHO. i dont know exactly what happenned...feel free to correct me if you wish. having a freebsd with a redhat look and feel (red hat BSD?) would be *really* kewl IMHO. are you listening redhat ?
    /me wishing openbsd could do SMP and had more drivers..*sigh*

    i agree. but the point is people dont want to waste those 5 hours. heres an opportunity for all those distros out there - make a distro thats secure by default (replace wuftpd with the anonftpd read only daemon, replace sendmail with qmail etc etc), easy to install (think redhat), has all necessary services hardened, has a simple firewall set up be default and is compiled with stackguard as much as possible. im sure people would buy - hell i would. and i spend more than 20 hours a week hardening my boxes/checking logs etc.

    bleh. if anyone had any sense we'd ditch those stupid chemical rockets and get nuclear engines. hell, we'd have colonised half the solar system by now. chemical engines just dont have the thrust to weight ratio required to push hundreds of tons into space per launch. we need something like a railroad into space carrying HUGE amounts of cargo. only nuclear engines can give that.

    hell...this is one of the reasons i left the UK. godamn CCTV cameras are EVERYWHERE...and i do mean EVERYWHERE. then they banned the already limited number of guns in the country for no reason at all. of course there is no such thing as a citizen of the UK..you guys are all subjects of the english empire... why fight it ? just leave the country. there are plenty of other countries around the globe. the only thing good about the UK was the data protection act..wish we had something like that in the US.

    its the same time as a metal detector. its a couple of seconds (read the article). deodrants/perfumes etc wont have an effect on the system..skin flakes are particles which can be easily seperated from odours. it doesnt distinguish smells - it has an ion detector system which bombards the residue with ions and base don that it can distinguish chemicals such as drugs or alcohol or even analyse DNA.

    bleh. with the JDBC/ODBC drivers in java you can do that with a simple file AND maintain future upgradability using a oracle driver instead of the simpletext driver. the SQL doesnt even change. get yourself a real web based language.

    the HC11 is a *great* uC. it allows you to build simple robotics with nothing more than a coupla resistors, motors and clock circuit you ignorant twat. have a look at the books pictures on : http://www.robotbooks.com/advanced-robotics.htm..i t'll give you some clues about the HC11.

    why not just buy a dual 600MHz asus board and stuff two 600mhz celerys in there with a slocket card ? it'll cost ya $300 or so but you get the same or better performance.
    im still waiting for amd to release dual cpu boards *sigh*.

    depending on which fork/release they contributed to. if they dont want the author to change the release they can say these changes fall under the GPL or they can give the author the patches with an explicit permission to roll em into a non GPLed release as well as the GPLed one. usually most ppl will simply GPL the changes...less headache for all. i've had patches given to me with "free to release under any license" conditions...which i promptly GPL of course. it's surprising how many patches fall under the latter category. most patch submitters arent too fussy.

    true. short of routers rejecting ipv4 packets from *all* the router macnufacturers, it isnt going to happen. heck, i have ipv6 enabled on my linux boxen and i cant get routed because the ISPs router doesnt support it.

    actually freebsd and linux are roughly comparable at speed...bsd is slightly faster on loaded systems while linux is faster on unloaded systems.
    what makes me currently more interested is stability - and freebsd seems to be winning this one for now..specially with the VM problems and screwups taking place with the kernel.

    most smart card readers can easily be read from unix systems..just find a smart card solution from the hundreds of vendors out there which will provide what you need. most of them interface as parallel port devices anyway.

    interesting. it would be nice if /. actually publicised it a bit...OSM launching DDos attacks is certainly grounds for criminal charges. OSM is currently winning the /. population over here with his frequent AC trollish postings..or at least his friends acting on his behalf seem to be...a simple story will make it official and appease everybody. just hope you guys do it quickly or the trolls *will* win this round - and make /. look like its suppressing the first ammendment to boot.
