    yep he does. however, thats not reason to ignore his opinions. the E10K IS an incredible machine. its also physically huge - ive seen one myself. and the stuff it can do is incredible. and BTW, i dont run a sun website.

    yup. actually solaris is fairly rock solid and ive never had it crash on me (same said for linux and OSF/1..unfortunately not for IRIX). solaris *does* make you reboot more often (things like replacing a keyboard on a sparc box causes it to go to the PROM and hang...and various other socket binding problems and other shit with javawebserver etc etc.

    Linux is a unix. in general most unix users inherently like other unixes. even if BSD would get lots of heat from linux (as they already do)..its still a unix. i dont really care who wins - as long as its a unix based derivative.

    uuh. no. show me a version of IE which works on solaris, irix, linux, as well as windows 95/98/nt consistantly and i might agree. show me a version of IE with less security holes, more control over remote executable code which can format your harddrive and i might believe you. IE 5.5 *wont* be better simply because the company who desinged it made it with marketshare and other PR bullshit in mind - not solid engineering.

    ultras arent that fast and alphas run hot. transmetas cpus are slower than pentiums at equivalent clock speeds. reality bites.

    RedHat provides piranha which can load balance FTP sessions..what he is looking for is really coda with piranha...or commercial AFS with piranha if you have 15K to blow.

    yes i do scoff at those who blindly use appliances. yes i know what a klystron in a microwave is and i do know how a refrigerator works. i *do* take the time to learn enough about a car so i can do on the spot repairs if im stranded in the middle of a desert. i *do* take the time to make sure the faraday cage around my microwave is working properly and i do take the time to make sure refrigerants arent leaking from my fridge.

    no..they'll just be ignored. any company who has earned the hatred of everyone is unlikely to have their product checked out by anyone. even if they come out with a truly spectacular product, people will just shrug and say they were scam artists. of course the chances of that ever happening are rare..oh wait, is that a flying pig ?
    they're just a bunch of con artists. stay the hell away.

    it doesnt mean you have to follow the trend you fucking retard. Do whatever you like - linux may be moving towards the im an idiot crowd, but there are plenty of coders who dont give a shit and code on UNIX because its the best platform there is..and lets face it - linux *is* one of the best unix development environments there is. The influx of money helps a lot of us who get free webspace at several free sites, get listings on freshmeat and have instant help via irc channels run by companies such as VA. and damn - i like having a friendly distro like redhat which i can whack on a box with the minimum of fuss that can be turned into a real unix dev environment without too much trouble - just install a couple of rpms, run a few scripts and delete off the redhat crud and youre all set.

    while we fight to preserve free speech on the net in the courts what we really need, IMHO, is :
    [a] A way to transmit data and store it in a publically accessible way anonymously on an anonymous network of servers or equivalent in multiple countries...with no control over the servers contents by their owners (i.e. theyre not responsible for whats on the servers and cant remove the data on them..mostly text of course)
    [b] An anonymous way to distribute files across the net in a secure manner (crypto protected)..something like the eternity server concept.
    [c] A mimimal anonymous network thats off limits to anyone but individuals...no companies allowed (and hence no advertising)...that also runs encapsulated on the global internet. Something like what fidonet used to be.
    This is probably wishful thinking but with everyone going DSL and 24/7 should be possible..

    uuh..no you dumb shit. AFAIK some linux coders *did* go out and ask for a license which they were not granted. in fact the DVDCCA didnt grant licenses to *any* software player until recently when they opened it up for windows.

    i dont think these tools help many open source projects..it might help the bigger ones but for most small ones, the far simpler solution is to dump the source into a tarball on a website and let people download and submit patches via email to the original author.

    mandrake is unstable redhat. it simply copies redhat and bolts on unstable code (dev releases) onto redhat to make it seem the latest and greatest distro. of course they did some minimal polishing and compiled for pentiums and above. personally, i stay away from this crud.
    BTW, anyone know of any linux distro that works on the sparccentre 2000 and 1000e ?? i'd love to put my old dual cpu machines to work under linux.
