    anyone know of any tools similar to SAX and DOM to interface to XHTML ? This would be significantly better than XML since its based on HTML 4.x as opposed to XMLs loosely defined structure.

    well..i certainly hope SGI doesnt die out. the real problem with the MIPS chips is that the speed ratings as compared to x86 cpus are pathetic (yes, i know the MIPS stuff is far cleaner and heck, i admin and code on a wide range of all your boxes daily).
    The real problem is when you try to sell a 250Mhz MIPS box to a PHB and an NT vendor comes around and says that he can sell a dual 700MHz x86 box for the same price, you *really* have problems convincing anyone to opt for the SGI boxen.
    BTW, are you guys hiring anyone ? i'd *love* to work at SGI..even if the company eventually goes under.

    umm..ive been an admin on several irix boxen (from the mips r4k based indy clusters to a massive o2k with 192 cpus and everything in between (o200, o2, octane..even the new SGI/NT PCs which suck BTW etc).
    I've always found irix to be the second easiest unix to admin, far better than solaris and second only to linux. inst is probably far superior to rpm/dpkg/whatever on linux and its a pretty easy OS to lock down tight (especially with irix 6.5.3m..very few security patches there since there are a handful of known holes). other than the stupid license servers i wouldnt have a problem.
    so..why is it a nightmare to admin irix ?

    umm..no. he's trolling. anyway, i love SGI..even with their overbloated price and crappy license servers, SGIs IRIX *blows* away every other unix including linux. They probably have the smoothest and most integrated desktop, friendly unix with grreat graphics hardware and a really nice overall environment.
    If you havent used it - you dont know what youre missing. granted their cpus are slow and the license shit sucks, the price is too high and the tech email/phone support is shit..but im not going to trade my O2 or my octanes anytime soon.and my 192 CPU O2K that my company has *will* smoke 99% of the hardware you can get yer hands on.

    hmm..then why did the harmony project die ? simple. QT used the QPL to kill it. period. anyway, i dont give two shits about KDE and no one is holding my hand - im happy with AfterStep and thats what im sticking to.

    I dont see why Linux has bad printing mechanisms...i think lpr is perfectly good as a remote print spooler and the drivers + printtool utility with redhat work great with all my HP printers.
    Heck, ive even begun to replace HP JetDirect print servers with redhat or slackware boxen..do we really need another print system ? Besides, even the CUPS guys are trying to build one...

    gnome applications are expanding phenomenally..the gnome core is also growing exponentially so yes you are going to find stability issues at this stage..its very pre alpha. dopnt forget that gnome has basically caught up with and is surpassing KDE in terms of functionality in half the time.

    the QT library which the code links to prevents people from using KDE across any platform other then what is mandated by the trolls..troll tech controls the QT library, the library controls the GPLed code therefore KDE is non free. i.e. it is not freely distributable.

    its a pretty fair test - read the article. basically redhat was faster than win2k in most things. /. headlines tend to be dramatic at best...and why wouldnt you trust redhat for > 100 users ? i know i can depend on linux far more than the expensive as shit solaris boxen i have running here.

    That part of the law is unfortunately ignored. no one has sued under it so companies dont care. but yes, someone could theoretically sue MPAA for NOT allowing a backup copy per customer of DVDs and could make em pay millions to replace every single DVD EVER sold. anyone wanna sign up for a class action lawsuit ?

    if they ban reverse engineering say goodbye to samba xmms and any number of other open source programs. if we loose the case we loose reverse engineering..and how many open source sites can you pass around ? one tarball is ok, but are you going to pass around the source of samba or the cvs branch of samba ? what about xmms ? staroffice (reverse engineered word files) ? XPDF (PDF) ? the list goes on and on..

    this bill isnt going to fly. firstly, it'll drop the quality of education in setting up and running such a huge and costly monitoring network..anyone realise that network traffic at universities is 10 Mbps per node and EVERY node will have to be monitored under this proposal ? most big univs have at least 5000 nodes on their networks. plus each ethernet jack which can take a DHCP machine will have to be monitored..at 4 jacks per wall per room..plus the external traffic will have to be firewalled/filtered AND monitored at speeds of 2+ Gbps and above at most univs. most univs dont even bother firewalling since its too expensive and costly..theres no finnancial data or anything important on campus networks anyway. The proposal to ban opposite sex meeting in their rooms is laughable at best. methinks the senators slowly going insane.

    yep .. and i dont doubt mandrake is still hurt by that image. personally i stay the hell away from distros who just repackage themselves in different flavours without adding anything new. if they havent gone thru the learning curve of adding anything new, why should i trust em ?

    i'd take a low power transmeta over a high power intel in my laptop any day - that includes the TMS3120. Fact is - laptop battery counts more than high speed ultra powerful processing power any day. if i can play mp3's or play videos, do a little office work, compile a kernel or two for 6hrs/day - thats plenty. its a lot less than i get with a intel laptop anyway...faster CPU or no faster CPU.

    what i really dont understand is : [a] To copy a DVD one must be able to authenticate to the drive. decryption doesnt really matter. [b] The authentication code was posted to the livid mailing list waay before the decss code. [c] the 90 day period for DVDCCA to protest has passed for the *authentication* code. [d] DVDCCA is claiming the DeCSS code can be used to pirate DVD's but has not stated *anything* about the authentication code. [e] You must defend *all* violations not just one...so why hasnt the case been thrown out ?

    hmm..cant you just do a freshmeat slashbox ? it usually handles these types of annoucements and most linux software is announced at freshmeat anyway...portaloo available at freshmeat is a good place to see how you can import freshmeat data into your site.

    hmm..i dont know. i use veritas on a sparcstorage array (120GB, 30 drive slots, FCAL) and it seems to work the same as linuxes software RAID functions...is it any better than the software RAID linux provides ?

    its a small port for connecting the motherboards winmodem to an external pinout. basically plug in a small circuit board into the mobos winmodem AMR slot and connect the RJ45 to the circuit board. its pretty stupid.

    i've been writing a program using java servlets for e-commerce systems. its designed to be database independent/platform independent and can be accessed from a text mode browser (lynx). suffice to say, you can abstract out the SQL from the database and let it handle the locking on its own..its fairly trivial with java servlets.

    no. with land line 911 you can call from a payphone and run for it..or drive away from it. typical response is > 1 minute and that translates to 1 mile+ for you to escape. with this you can be tracked *all* the time. IMHO, this sucks. if i see a fire at the side of the road and i want to dial 911 anonymously on my cellphone (to prevent the hassle of getting involved with cops etc) this will definitely cause me to pause and think about dialling..who wants to get involved needlessly anyway ?
