    ya. you can watermark with frequency information i.e. 1 bit for a whole range of unique frequencies spread over several dozen physical bits in the file. This makes is pretty tough to remove the watermark especially if several watermarks are hidden in the file...its also tougher to encode the watermark and/or verify it however..think of it as several dozen plastic straws painted the same colour as the surrounding hay in a haystack..pretty difficult to find and remove.

    the point is - or at least my interpretation of it is - large clusters of cheap processors can replace legacy systems. it may not be beowulf, but im pretty certain a large unix cluster could do most of the stuff a mainframe does..ok..maybe not all.

    i said it before, i'll say it again.

    On a related note, you can also have your card use a different MAC address

    ifconfig eth1 hw ether deadbeef0001
    (this needs do be done while the card is down for obvious reasons)

    now your card will answer all arp requests with DE:AD:BE:EF:00:01.

    Note:
    The kernel performs this trick on most cards by setting the card into promiscous mode and using software to filter out all MACs that
    aren't yours which stands to reason it would be slightly slower than just using your real MAC.

    no. the problem is that the NT model is significantly different from the UNIX model. ACLs and no standard permissions mean that NT is responsible for NT only.

    hmm..i'll second this one. Its not flamebait (maybe we should have a rant moderation). I believe Sun will eventually GET IT(TM), but they have a while to go. keeping up the pressure is a nice way to get them to change their minds.

    i wonder if the ROMs/emulator and API are going to be opne or closed ? The older versions used to be open but now they require you to physically sign an agreement before allowing access to roms/apis/source...no electronic access.

    MUSCLE is good of course but a simple barcode reader hooked to an rs232 port and sealed in the machines case and a simple barcoded ID card is usually more than sufficient and will probably be cheaper for linux...dunno bout BSD.

    At my old university a sequent box (Dynix - weird UNIX flavour) had an uptime of 10 YEARS. If Linux stands by most UNIX conventions, it should show uptimes until 2038 without skipping a beat. I've seen kernel uptimes of 2+years with Linux but not more than that.

    linux threads are properly implemented. The only thing is that they are slightly different than the normal unix threads for greater efficiency. The normal unix thread calls are there - but there is also a superset (i.e. different thread call) which is the preferred linux way of thread handling.

    youre a twit. the whole point of the GPL is to allow seamless collaboration. why dont you want everything released and allow people to work on it ? What do you gain by having tight control of it ?

    problem with that is - when it comes to crunch time and the GPL doesnt hold out - youre in deep shit. witness the AT&T BSD thing that basically killed BSD by killing its license.

    nope. the dragonball cpu in the palm and this phone can do PGP but wont be able to do it in real time. and it doesnt/cant interface with the voice side of the phone AFAIK.
