actually ive experienced something like this too..although i wouldnt use the choice of words used i can understand the frustration..:).."everyone seems to know about" probably came from posts to the GTK mailing list (around 4 last time i checked with geocrawler..perhaps more now).. GTK 1.2.3 (stable) doesnt support it.

i wish there'd be a simple standard way to do it but there isnt. a simple shell script that adds the command to your start menu on whatever wm youre runnning would be a nice touch to rpm. im willing to bet smIRC doesnt do the same if the user runs afterstep/kde.
this is flamebait...but anyway, i use afterstep with both gnome + kde libraries. both run apps great, afterstep rocks when it comes to its default slick NeXTish look+speed and Wharf is all i ever wanted in customisability.

theyve already done that. i dont think we can bloat them any further...2 CDROMs to install the small business edition of Office2000 ???? gimme a break.
its *not* the same. C is infinitely more flexible than C++ and most of us have years of C experience. if i moved to C++ id be a helluva less productive...Java's also superior in redgard to C++ and id rather move to Java than C++ anyday. What youre going to see is KDE slowly being ignored while gnome becomes faster and more reliable..the trend is already there folks...nothing you can do about it.

as a developer i have to say - yes, if the app supports it and most dont. The "standard" in gnome as provided by examples etc, makes a table (2 x 2) in whatever window is on the screen. the main stuff is usually placed at 1,1 and (with variable size filling) the scroll bars are placed at 1,2 and 2,1 respectively. Since these are hardcoded you cant change em unless gnome provides some functionality im unaware of (dynamic table elements?)....KDE..i dont know. im not using and dont want to due to Qt license issues..i imagine a lot more developers got burned because of this. i dont trust Qt's new opensource licensing and am much more comfortable with the GPL anyway.
true..but consider this : i have a secret message A that only B can hear. I put it in a bulletproof, bombproof van with a trusted security guard and ask him to carry it to B. I also leave the back door of the van open. do i have security ? NO. the van may never be hijacked by force but anyone can pick up the message with the back door unlocked. its cracked either way.
i should point out that some of us (me!) have access to complete chip fabs - can crank out complete silicon wafers with chips on them and have access to SMT machines. just because *you* cant do it doesnt mean other ppl cant.
wrong!. the merced supports HP's PA-RISC instructions and has a RISC core. if it runs RISC and has a RISC core - its RISC. the fact that it also runs CISC instructions via emulation is besides the point.
idle curiosity...but can we do it from the command line ? touch/proc/capslock or something ?? i'd love to be able to turn my caps/scroll/num locks on and off remotely...for some strange reason.:)
I believe SNA is a dead protocol..most mainframes can do TCP/IP, and no one seems to have a need for SNA anymore. its like the Sun i386 machine - obsolete and dead.
X10 is mianly for lights and other simple on/off devices...you can do high speed MPEG capture using X10 (i.e. digital VCRs)....besides X10 is very vulnerable to cracking/hijacking of signals etc. it uses no encryption and can easily be spoofed.
Is enlightenment going to go the 3D way of desktops ? Some companys were promoting kewl 3D accelerated desktops and with the Xfree 4 accelerator support can we expect 3D accelerated desktop support in E ?
ProEngineer and most expensive applications running on IRIX do this..they use nodelocked flexlm license servers and expire..the problem is that if a license server goes down youre screwed..if the license expires youre screwed. i've seen this happen so often its not funny and throughly pisses me off.
linux got rooted because he knew a login password and used the kde buffer overflow vulnerability (which should have been patched). The kernel module thing has been around for a long time (check phrack magazine for a BSD one). anyway, this scares the shit outta me personally.
These protocols, particularly HTTP, don't maintain a persistent connection between browser and server. Each request from the browser is an independent contact, as is each response from the server. Problems : Developers can no longer rely on a network connection that remains active for the duration of a session.
now why did your boss prevent you from explaining this ?

most major businesses have unix experience since thats their backend. they wont get burned if they have their admins set it up..which they will.

gnome should be stable as well. gnome uses gint,gchar,gint8,gint16 etc not the libc stuff so it should be compliant.

why not do it in C with the GTK ? its farily simple and extensive tutorials are available at www.gtk.org
switch off your speakers. FCC will take care of it if he built it himself and didnt get approval...its not dangerous for your PC IMHO.

can you post yours up or give a link ? i'd like to see the code.
is their tty camera thing - sounded neato. anyone have something similar ??
