> How about a true speed performance by making "real" solid state drives affordable? (real meaning on CF or USB drives)
If you think a solid-state drive on a USB connection would have anything to do with 'speed,' then that's probably what you're on. Same goes for CF.
The way to get real speed out of a solid-state drive is to use real memory backed-up by battery. Flash memory isn't fast memory, and isn't suitable for that many rewrites, anyway.
Okay, so this brings to my mind a question about the miniITX boards by VIA. These are very small (170mm x 170mm) boards with basically everything included (video, sound, network, etc.), and are very low power (usually no active cooling, even for the CPU).
Do these things work well with Linux (especially the embedded video, sound, & networking)?
I'm planning on building a little box later this year with one of these things, and I was planning on using Linux, little suspecting that the driver issue was still an issue in 2003 for things like this. Very disheartening.
Please tell me I won't have to use Windows on this system!:(
To defeat the forces of evil, these are the entities that make up the Coalition of the Willing. Oh yeah. No more WMD on an Apple box! Woohoo, we're all saved! Re-elect Apple in 2004!:)
But you can't build a dual-P4 at all. For that, you gotta go with a Xeon, whose price will make Apple's look quite small.
The performance will be quite different from your P4/2.8, as well. Until realworld benchmarks on real production machines come out, comparing an PPC970 Apple to an Intel or AMD machine is really quite silly. And that's not even comparing a 64-bit OS X (which by rumours may be _after_ the 64-bit hardware).
I doubt the prices will change much. Apple's prices have little to do with how much the CPU costs (and the CPUs probably cost less than the previous Moto chips). That's what the market will bear, so that's what they charge. *shrug*
2) Is it dual-channel DDR, or did Apple pull an Apple and make it single-channel? This is critical, as they do NOT want these things bandwidth-starved like Macs have traditionally been.
Here's a potential problem with that scenario. Say some genegeneered species is released into the wild. It's able to overcome the natural indigenous species quickly, but then later entirely dies off due to not being able to handle some other natural circumstance such as a common bacteria or virus, or unnaturally cold or hot season, that the previous, natural species could. Then BOTH species are gone, leaving a big-ass void in the ecosystem. Then the things that depended on there being a species in that part of the "cycle of life" start being effected. It gets progressively uglier from there.
Ahhh, UMR, the college where men are men, women are scarce, and sheep are nervous! I guess the days are long gone when you would get called into David Dearth's office to explain the need to issue hundreds of RSCS commands to play on BitNet without approval. *ahem* I'm going to assume they learned the lesson I tried to teach them about resetting all drafting class CAD computer account passwords to 'winter' at the same time. Honest, that's the only reason I did it!:)

Exactly.

Don't get yourself so worked up, grandpa.

I _would_ use it, but I'm really more of a cat person.
Dogs smell funny.

Yeah, but it was probably really nicely silvery-graphite-coloured shit.
Okay, so the only real questions left are:
1) What do they look like?
and the performance-relevant one:
2) Is it dual-channel DDR, or did Apple pull an Apple and make it single-channel? This is critical, as they do NOT want these things bandwidth-starved like Macs have traditionally been.
The hope meter is waaaaay up today, though.
What is this ... 'non-tech' you speak of? :)
Okay, Photography, Movies, Architecture, Travel, learning French, Writing, Capitalizing Letters, Spelling Colour With a U, and Other Assorted Things.
Oh yeah, and chewing gum. I like gum.

Okay, so now that it's possible, I want a neon orange fish with a big ass wing on the back, and 'VTEC' printed on the scales. Aww, yeah.
And Nitrous boost! Give those dolphins & sharks something to talk about at the water cooler on Monday.

"Nutritious and delicious, tastes just like chicken!"
Hey, maybe now we can have a live action Charlie Tuna!
Comparing the taste of these fish to natural fish is like comparing apples and oranges. Oh, wait, now we can have both at the same time!
So what colour synthahol goes with synthetic fish?
Will you have to do a blush response test to find out if your fish is a replicant or not? Calling Chef Harrison Ford!
Maybe now they can genegineer some fish that, even when uncooked, taste like cooked fish. Sushi for the not-so-discriminating palate.

Oh yeah? I _guarantee_ you my work doesn't make your work possible. Or your money back!
Nobody - I thought it was pretty weird, myself. If I had any friends, I'd have them mark it as funny, not insightful.
Now *that's* humour!
We should be able to meta-moderate as 'funny'. Funny moderations - they're the best.

Gosh, you're mean.
Why do I get the feeling somewhere there's a dark, smoky room with Mr. Burns, Dr. Hibbert, & Count Chocula all giggling like madmen over this?

That sounds more like spitting UP than spitting OUT.
