I just installed AbiWord v2.4.1 on my work machine and compared it to Word 97, and it's using more memory (15MB vs 13MB), so I dunno. It seems plenty fast and featureful, so I guess that's good enough to compete with a product that isn't open source or free. *shrug*
I'll have to try OpenOffice sometime, though.
I _really_ wish Evolution for Windows was ready. But since I'm moving to a Mac next year (when they go Intel), long-term, I'm more interested in native OS X versions of software these days.
AbiWord v2.4.1 vs Word 2003
on
OpenOffice Bloated?
·
· Score: 2, Informative
I tried this recently, just to check on initial memory usage, and fired up Word 2003 and AbiWord v2.4.1, typed in a very small line of text into both (same text), and checked memory usage under Windows - and found AbiWord using slightly less than half the memory that Word 2003 was taking. I've not tried having AbiWord laod up any Word documents or anything like that, yet, but it's certainly worth checking into.
>> overly-expensive > Overly expensive compared to, what?
Compared to their non-hybrid versions. (for hybrids that have non-hybrid counterparts (Civic, Accord, Escape, etc.), the hybrid version is always more expensive, if not much more so.
>> overly-complex > Overly complex compared to, what? Yes, they're different than a regular car engine.
Compared to a regular car. What else would I have been referring to?
>> not-so-safe-for-emergency-workers > Not as safe as, what? It's not like a tankful of gasoline is exactly the epitome of safety.
Look, as much as I love the idea of the SmartCar, no way in hell am I going to be driving one on the roads around here, with all the monster SUVs on the road. I'm green, but I'm not suicidal!
Some better ideas are coming along shortly, though. VW is coming out with their "twin-charger" engine cars (Polo & Golf, and in 2008, a Scirocco successor, possibly named the Rivo). A twin-charter Polo may get up to 69mpg - on gasoline.
Another idea is to use an efficient diesel auto - like the TDI Volkswagens currently available in most U.S. states. The TDI Jetta & Golf can get over 45mpg (some get slightly over 50; depends on how you drive, I imagine). Since these are diesels, you can run them on biodiesel and not only get great gas mileage, but also have much-improved emissions at the same time.
VW recently announced they're switching to common-rail diesels, so as to improve emissions.
And all this without resorting to an overly-expensive (not that VW is cheap, mind), overly-complex, not-so-safe-for-emergency-workers hybrid.
I'm really hoping that hydrogen injection system, H2N-Gen, actually comes to market and works as advertised. This is a device that injects hydrogen into the cylinders during combustion to enable around 97% of the fuel to be burned, thus almost eliminating emissions; should work on any internal combustion engine (gas, diesel, or natural gas). Let's hope it's also relatively affordable. "Another fine Canadian product (based on an American invention)"
I now return you to your regularly-scheduled Slashwhining, already in progress...
Yeah, but the second time I had the Wookie bit to add. You'll probably live longer if you just chill the hell out. If you're up in Canada, that's probably not too hard, cuz you all live in igloos, right?
Mebbe. Is Saskatchewan where Sasquatches come from? What _is_ the plural of Sasquatch, anyway, assuming that's even spelled correctly. If Canadian, it probably needs a superfluous 'u' in there somewhere.
In Canada, currently the province of Saskatchewan doesn't observe it.
Haha, funny, like there's _really_ a province called "Saskatchewan." That's hilarious. The last joke province name I heard was something like "Nunavut."
Canadians obviously have the best sense of humour.;)
What, you have a magnetic-strip card reader attached to your computer? Sure, no problem - we'll just mandate that all computers that want to access a bank online have to have one, or whatever hardware doohickey they decide to require.
THAT's the real problem with this proposal. Much like extending Daylight Savings Time, politicians have no idea what impact this has on the real world - programmers that have to code this stuff, and in this really BAD case, new hardware that even the end user is required to now purchase.
Well, keep in mind this application is targeted towards pro photographers. The cost of upgrading from 512Meg to 1Gig is pretty miniscule to the costs of pro photo equipment, even if you're dumb enough to buy the memory upgrade from Apple. At least Apple is now making 512Meg the default; that didn't used to be the case, even earlier this year.
I thought the chalice from the palace had the pellet with the poison, and the flagon with the dragon originally had the brew that was true. But someone dropped the flagon with the dragon, so that had to be substituted.
That's an interesting and informative page.

There IS no spoon.

I was referring to being in more danger in a SmartCart FROM being around SUVs, not being 'safer than in an SUV'.

And a hybrid has one of those as well.
You have a job?
You get raises?!
Shut the hell up, already.

Pair this with a 720x480 (24-bit) OLED display, with a 1 or 1.8" HD (whatever the size is), and you'd have a pretty killer base for a PSP2.
...for the last few minutes.
Is it just me, or is this thing noticeably faster than Firefox 1.0.7? Can anyone comment on how the speed compares to FF 1.5 beta?
You know, not all teenage girls are complete idiots who TaLk LiEk tHiS all the time.

Teenage girls are pretty much the last thing the average Slashdotter knows anything about.
That reminds me of a Simpsons quote by Ralph Wiggam, "I bent my Saskatchewan."

Holy crap, way to not recognize a joke. You get a gold star for the day.
Do you have any idea how silly "Massachussetts" sounds if you didn't grow up in the US?
:)
Or even if you did.
Mississippi is even funnier, though, even when only taking into account the name itself, let alone anything else about the state.
It's only since 2001 that Canada just started using a 24-hour clock.
Jesus...that's gotta make for a long fucking day!
In Saskatchewan we...
:)
Stop it with that 'Saskatchewan' joke - you're killin' me here!
It's like some kind of Wookie name or something.
Coming from a man who can only read digital clocks.
Who said he could read?!

jesus. for that much, i hope they at least took a sharpie and wrote 'cisco' somewhere on it.
Nah, I think it says 'VETC'.
Brilliant. And the cost of that compared to my keys? Think about this.
how is this -more- difficult than what we do now

Yes, but remember, the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
