I see what happened now - the filter ate my comment in the angle brackets... forgot to set that back... which of course was the part that separated the joke from what has now been marked as "flamebait"... I hate the fact that extrans stopped working months ago and still hasn't been fixed...
Arrgh! I read that, I was commenting about the symmetry of the whole thing - it was a subtle joke (not a good one, to be sure, but a joke nonetheless) - how can you have *S*MP, if you don't have a 'symmetric' number of procs... It's like a 3-processor SMP box... there's something just inherently wrong with that - take another one out, or replace the bad one (powers of two are much nicer than simple even numbers).
I should have included more text, but hey, I tend to underestimate the humor coeffecient of/. readers (and overestimate mine). --
Actually, the K6-2/500 I have runs ~1000 BogoMIPS... they seem to do nothing faster than equivalent Intel chips... of course, that doesn't mean much 8^) --
The biggest issue is the binaries... gcc doesn't get nearly the amount of work for Alpha as it does for x86 (with good reason)... the Tru64 compiler is what has really made the difference, especially in floating point. Of course, more work on the MMU would be welcome too...
I was starting some compiler work for Alpha, then my board died, and I can't seem to get a new one - if anyone knows where I can get a board to suit a 533MHz 21164PC, please let me know...
Well... the S/390 port runs on a VM, so Linux doesn't know the kind of power that is actually down there... it thinks that it has one (or a couple) CPUs - not a whole 'frame... more like 41k single CPU machines (hmmm, you could beowulf them together over the internal 390 connections, but that's a nice waste of big iron)...
True, PC hardware doesn't have the same reliability an scalability as Sun stuff, but you'd be hard pressed to argue that for POWER architecture (think RS/6000 & SP (Deep Blue), AS/400, S/390), or big Alpha-based systems. It will be interesting to see some server benchmarks on the new Suns - if the new proc lives up to the hype, it should make quite a machine. Alphas and POWER have had them beat in performance (since the UltraSparc II is getting pretty old).
Nothing keeps a room warm like a Cray;-) and the old Cray-1 was definitely the coolest looking machine - came with it's own couch, all it needed was a matching coffee table 8^)
I guess you just can't fit a game on a couple hundred meg anymore... heck, when PC games started coming on 2 or 3 1.44MB floppys I got worried...

Hmmm, so a deltic must be one who writes postcards... so his spelling would be bad, because he's not used to being able to write full sentences... a holdover from the telegram days...
Looks like a standard small CD to me... Check out your current CD player - see the inset in the tray? It's for CDs that size. Some examples of CDs that size - music singles (not typical, but I have seen them), those linux business card CDs, and the small CDs that came with some books (Tom Clancy, etc...). --
In fact, rates are increased (somewhat dramatically) for those with spots on their records... I've been lucky enough to keep points off of my license, and not get hit by cell-phone-talking-changing-the-kid-in-the-back-se at-soccer-mom-in-a-minivan types (nearly run off the road by the aforementioned several times), which raises your rate, even if you aren't at fault... In some cases, a single speeding ticket can raise your rate by a hundred or more percent (depending on the severity of the infraction, and the insurance company).
Being a single male under 25 does suck for insurance, though... next year I solve one of those, and two more years to the other one (no plans to change the male part, though 8^D )
and we (former) NJians get screwed again... as if our rates weren't high enough, we don't get a license until 17, and now the 25 line turns to 26 (even if I'm now in MN)... of course, I've got my house insured with the same company as the car, and after next June (wedding) the married thing drops my rates a bunch (hmmmm, that's even worse than age, really)...
Hmmm, the time on it is set at to 12:19PM (CDT), while now it is only 9:53AM (CDT) - it will probably show up later...

Thanks for the link - I'll have to check them out...

... why 31? Why not 32?

On first glance, one might guess that 1489 was the total # of BogoMIPS, but that just isn't right...

Ask Jeeves, of course...
Try Rusted Root, or Root Canal - those might help.

OK, new solution - ditch mobile leash^H^H^H^H^Hphone ;-)

You're forgetting the 64-bit POWER arch chips... a much bigger contender than Alpha has ever been.

Hmmmm, maybe it's one of those funny stacks, where you can get stuff off of the bottom... oh wait, that's a queue... damn, almost had it...

Don't use Outlook and don't keep any names in the Outlook address book.

Isn't that illegal in certain states? (CA, CO, among others). String 'em up!

I doubt the Windows setup.exe on the CD runs AGP drivers... but, hey - stranger things have happened...

Nah, it comes from early 80's cartoons (Transformers/GoBots/Voltron,etc)... of course, those might have come from overseas...
