My year old celeron does it in ~3 minutes, give or take. I still remember when I got my pentium 100, and took my compiles down from ~1h15m(486/66) to ~12m. *That* was bliss.

    >I'd guess quite a lot of /. posters aren't kernel developers either ;)

Gee, I hope not 8^) My best effort was fixing a network driver... non-Becker, of course ;-) Never got it quite stable enough to merge in, but it worked for me... as long as you waited a little bit between a network stop and start... the restart would trigger some nasty interrupts, and spew madness to the screen for a while... not anything I would feel comfortable submitting. Then I sold the card to a windows user friend. Works great 8^)

Well... some of the VPN stuff was updated in .13 and .14, so even patches to earlier versions get a little bit hairy. I think I went from .12 to .14 - I picked up the new version when I moved. System was up before that, and when I moved, I needed the new VPN functions, so I grabbed and recompiled. Only been down once since then (CPU upgrade). If there's nothing that really grabs you (aside from DDoS fixes - which you can patch and redo on the fly with modules), you generally don't need to upgrade every version... though back in college I was a little more obsessive - had to have the newest dev kernel on my backup box within a couple hours of release, or I felt behind... a little sick, but fun. Now I just want it to behave, and I keep my eyes open for whichever releases have the stuff I want...

Other preliminary research also indicates that the 'I Love You' worm mail was perpetrated solely to prevent the further distribuion of this 'Katz Gas', as it is known. One high level source, who wishes to remain anonymous claims, "It's only a theory right now, but it stands to reason that by bogging down the internet with more e-mails, and having the larger part of the 'Slashdot community' busy handling problems and bashing Microsoft, the spread of 'Katz Gas' could be minimized."

We'll continue monitoring this phemonenon, as it is noted that other 'Katz Gas' leaks will happen on a regular basis, often choking people with lack of wit and reason. Several /. Why should I be forced to buy a multi-hundred dollar player and a multi-hundred dollar screen when I already have quality equipment for it? Or pay another $100+ dollars for Windows, just so I can waste drive space to watch DVDs?

A lot of college students spent decent money on their computers, and don't necessarily have a lot left over (or space left over) for a TV/DVDp.

Besides, I tend to be fairly demanding of my video/audio equipment - I can't stand watching an inferior player throw crap to an inferior screen with one speaker out the side... especially when I already have a flat computer tube with digital audio out to a real decoder.

I won't ever buy 90% of the music that I've heard on mp3, and the other 10% is my own stuff anyway. If I can get one Metallica song for free, what the hell. Saves me a whole lot of money. It's really not encouraging me to buy the CD. Granted, it *did* encourage me to purchase Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, but it also stopped me from purchasing the Episode 1 soundtrack (all DVD concerns aside).

The point is, Jon saying that this band should be stopped from taking action against people that are stealing from them is a ludicrous position. It doesn't matter how much money they've made before, or how much they are losing, but they are being treated unjustly as artists. More power to them for standing up for their rights. I wish them luck, if only to set an important precedent.

I'm against invasion of privacy and all that, but hell, don't use the service if you don't want your illegal activities tracked! If you break the law using somebody's system, be prepared to stand the consequences. Deal, people.

I use it now and then when I really want a post to trickle a little higher up, but not usually. It seems to attract more trolls than anything else. Oh well, but the system is backward.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I'm sorry that you have been put off Linux or anything by "a year's worth of zealotry and bigoted postings". I'm not saying that you should use Linux - use whatever works for you. I run NT on one computer, 98 on another, and Linux on another box (and AIX at work). They all have their purposes, are useful for different tasks, and have advantages and disadvantages. You should try things for yourself, and see what you think. If you don't like linux, I personally don't care - it doesn't have any affect on my wallet, and I am not personally offended. There are zealots of every kind no matter where you are, both on the net and in real life. I've seen sites of MS zealots, BSD zealots, Linux zealots, nVidia zealots, 3Dfx zealots - whatever. Make up your mind for yourself based on the merits of a product, not what complete strangers claim they know.

You seem to still visit /. even though you claim to be dissapointed with it. Why is that? You obviously see some worth in it, or at least enjoy it as entertainment.

Whether or not you represent the open-source community, that has been much of the focus of /. since its inception - the site started with justa few people and their interests, and has grown significantly. The scope of the site has grown wider over time as a more diverse group has come to play, but there are some things that take a long time to change, and many people would rather that they don't.

The majority of the projects that are announced here are usually fairly important, though there have been some things I've seen that made me say, "huh? How'd that get on here?" Of course, I say that about a lot of reposted stories that aren't open-source related (see: Dropsquad or Furby Autopsy).

Remember - the only way to make change here is to submit stories that you think are of interest, and to comment on the ones we have. You can vote with your words or your silence.

I don't let zealots bother me any more than Barney, the Teletubbies, the WB, or other inane behavior. Think for yourself.
