How come no company has come out with one of the felxible keyboards for the Palm? Seems like the perfect application of that technology. When your done, just roll up your keyboard and stick it in its pouch.

I guess we need to start getting Palms with USB ports on them, then we can plug whatever we want into them, keyboards, mice, flash readers, etc. USB is so cool.

I kind of view console gaming the same way I view internet appliances now. They are directed more at the less geekier population that doesn't go out and spend $1000 on upgrading their computer every year to the latest processor and video card. There are a lot of these types of people out there.

Think about how many kids < 10 years old there are at any point in time. A lot of these kids won't have a fully tweaked out Athlon box with Geforce Ultra 2, it would be too much money. But, mom and dad might be willing to spring for a $300 console that will last 2 years or so. That's a huge market.

Personally, I'll stick with my PC, but then again, I have the means and the know how to keep it up to date.

  21. Jar-Jar is Integral to the Story on Star Wars Episode 2 Starts Shooting · · Score: 5

Lucas has reiterated numerous times after being given heat about Jar-Jar that Jar-Jar is integral to the story. There are a number of rumours circulating around the Internet concerning this.

One is that Jar-Jar is unconciously weilding the force, and is on his own path to becoming a Jedi. This rumor speaks about how Jar-Jar, although clumsy, still seems to win battles despite his clumsiness. This kind of story line could speak to the nature of the force, how it is far reaching, even to the meek.

Another rumour is that Jar-Jar is a character from the later movies, and is currently "disguised." This rumour speaks about how Jar-Jar is pretty similiar to Human in size and weight (some other stuff too I'm not sure of.) I even saw one website suggesting Jar-Jar was Bobafett(!).

Lucas is a master of weaving storylines. I can't wait to see how Jar-Jar fits in based on Phantom Menace.

That is actually a very valid point. "Lazy eye" is a very common medical condition. People with "Lazy eye" have an imbalance in their eyes where one eye bends in and often have trouble seeing stereoscopically.

The 3d process here sounds similar to the effect presented by 3d movies. I have "Lazy eye" and can only experience 3d movies a certain times of the day when I am not fatigued (I guess when my eyes are rested enough to properly focus at this time of day). I wonder if this system would pose similar difficulties for me.

  24. Dual Use Technology on PS2 a Weapons Development Platform? · · Score: 1

The threat of "dual use" technology, i.e., technology that is commercial but could be adapted for military purposes, has been around for a long time.

However, in our *brave new world*, the international buying and selling of advanced technologies is an extremely large and important market to highly industrialized economies. It is interesting to note that The Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls (COCOM) was disbanded in early 1994. COCOM was established to keep advanced technologies from being transferred to an expanding Soviet regime. The abolishment of COCOM was an obvious message from the Clinton Administration that after the fall of the Soviet Union, a policy of export denial would be doing more harm than good. In todays world, the diffusion of technology can no longer be controlled.

The best possible policy for highly industrialized economies is the management of the purposes for which the technologies they gave birth to are used. The connection between computers and weapons development is overplayed anyways. Remember, the United States designed the first nuclear bomb without a computer. ;-)
