Insightful? I've noticed half of the posts the past few days that have been modded up as Insightful are far from that. Half of them say we should not retaliate, its just what the terrorists want. How insightful is that. They want us to attempt to destroy them? Uh huh. And I want all my computer privileges taken away for the rest of my life. I'll bet they don't care what we do. They either think they can get away without us harming them, or they want to die for their cause. Probably the former. I'm sure whoever did this is now thinking that hell, they got away with this, right in the heart of this country, how the hell will we do anything to harm them in their country?
Of course on the other hand, modding up people talking about obliterating the people who did this is not exactly right either. Thats what everyone else thinks. The other extreme. Those are the two popular thoughts. Insightfulness is not characterized by thinking with the majority. Maybe the posts stating that we do what is necessary to destroy who did this, without doing any extraneous damage or harm, should be the ones modded up as insightful.
Ten bucks says the people who say that we should just sit back and do nothing would complain about a mother that killed her kids getting off because she was considered insane. In a situation like this, you don't do what is "right". You do what is necessary to prevent something like this from happening again.
Hell, imagine the cost of preventing this from happening again if we took no military/violent action. All the security measures that we would have to have in place. I'm sure some of those measures would GREATLY infringe on our own privacy. If we get the problem at the source, sure we'll have extra security measures, but none like we would if we let the people who did this go without any punishment.
Yes, there are limitations that overshadow some advantages, but honestly, there are some advantages that CLEARLY out weigh ALL the disadvantages.
You're at the office, no TV, VCR, DVD, etc available, and you need some quickie stress relief, what better than being able to watch video on your cell phone? I would love to have that kind of speed to watch streaming por...I mean media....yeah, streaming media at my household computer...
Now how do you decide? Do you plug 'er in and watch, or do you turn 'er on vibrate and keep 'er hidden?
Technology these days, giving you the answers, but creating more questions...
Actually, I find one assumption pretty reasonable. From what I can tell, the only thing the RIAA can blame Napster for hurting is CD singles...I mean, why go pay $6 for a CD of five songs when you can spend 30 minutes downloading a few of the songs?
Maybe they could do a little program where they let you pay like $3 for three songs, and you can choose to download which ever three you want. Even if they don't buy the CD, with the cost of encoding a song and storing it on a server being next to nothing, they are still making a larger profit, which is what they are all about, right?
I don't think the Slashdot editors realize that, well, we just don't give a shit about what they think. *shrugs*
Personally, I really don't think it'll be that bad, cause u can't stop the net. Honestly, look at the growth its caused, and dammit, I don't give a shit if they go after hackers. If its illegal, and they get caught, who's fault is that?
Fuck the new president, he's gonna make them strike down hard on me if I get caught stealing...
It appears everyone else on here had a bad experience. Well, I'm a senior in high school, and have participated in it since my school started it (My best friend was the one who brought it to the attention of our science teacher). It has been one of the most fun and entertaining experiences I have had! I completely forgot that it started until I read the article. I can't wait now. And Several other people were talking about no support from their school, etc. We get excellent support. Our new principal (er, was there last year too) is very excited about it and tries to get as much funding from the school district as can. We have massive teacher and student interest. The only reason we only have 30 students out of a student body of 1400 or so is because of the time involved. It is also generally very well accepted as far as the rest of the kids who aren't in goes, and no one really gives us the nerd treatment, plus many of the baseball and football players and many other "popular" students are in it. But the experience of getting to work in every phase of the design of the robot is fun, from brain storming to crafting our own parts out of steel and aluminum to programming the control unit. Its very eye opening to see the engineers struggle on it too!
So I don't know about these people who say it wasn't challenging, or it wasn't fun. If you think it wasn't challenging, then get off your high horse and admit it was. When you have professional engineers that work for Lockheed, Nasa, and 500 -person engineering firms have trouble, then you know its challenging. Either that or they stuck to they're programming, and didn't get involved with anything else, and well, who's fault is that?
That last paragraph will probably start a flame war, but hey, I'm just telling it like it is!
"Brand new for 2003, Maytag's kitchen appliance set with copy protection! They'll keep you from copying those recipes straight from your favorite cooking shows! With they're brand new unintrusive chemical makeup sensors and....."
Bah, that wasn't very funny, but it HAD to be said...
Are there any? DnD obviously isn't, what other past fantasy films have been decent? I can't wait for The Lord of the Rings series to come out, as it looks REALLY good. Of course we have to wait another year for the first one.:-(
If you're married and have three kids, are you gonna by a Honda Civic? If you work with someone and have to haul things around, are you gonna by a VW Bug? Probably not...why punish us for getting something that works the best for us? You raise the taxes on gas, then the people taht work for construction companies, etc, have to pay more for gas, which comes out of the companies pocket, then thats passed on to us, and on down the line. You might not think it makes a difference, but I guarantee, you do the math, and you'll be surprised. Also, what happens to poeple like me, who go to work full time and support themselves? I can't be spending $100 a month on gas alone!
....then they don't piss off 20+ million users of Napster. Ok, so probably only half are old enough to vote, but thats still at least 10 million. Thats enough to capture all electoral votes here in Texas, or all the ones in New York. And well, almost enough for California, especially if you count the Gnutella and other open source Napster alternative users!
Hey! Maybe they are actually trying to do whats right, even though its not whats popular!
How has he been bad? One of the most outstanding things I have heard a governor do was give the raise to teachers that he did. One of my coworker's wife is a teacher, and she has had a $6,000 raise since he has been governor....
I could understand maybe a quick plug for Gore, but the way CmdrTaco said it, it makes Bush sound like he's the one responsible for the arrests, when the Republican convention has nothing to do with it. I guarantee that similar things will happen during the democratic convention. I'd like to hear CmdrTaco's reasons for hating GWB. I live in Texas, and well, he's been one hell of a governor. I know some democrats who have loved him...
This could be VERY cool! You could get coupons on the fly. And imagine walking by a store, thinking about going in, but deciding there isn't anything you'd really care about in there. Then your phone vibrates, you look at it, and there's an ad for a really good deal on say, some sunglasses you might be intersted in at the store. If you hadn't had that ad, you would have never known.
People think that it would be an annoyance and that you'd be forced to recieve those ads. I don't think you'd have to worry about it. There would be many people who didn't like it, and if all companies make you use the ads, a new company will pop up and offer service without the ads. And imagine if the companies offered to say, take $5 a month of your service to agree to accept the ads. I guarantee that would NOT hurt any companies that offered that. It'd be really cool ifyour phone would actually read the ads to you. That way you could use it while driving and not really endanger anyone!
One last thing...this actually is another step in a possibly good direction with advertising. That is, advertising thats tailored for each person. For example: You've chosen that you will take the ads-on-demand through your cellphone. You also agree to allow them to track your responses to those ads. That way, after a month or two, you're only getting ads about food, computers, and electronics, but nothing that you aren't interested in. If this trend continues, then more people will be more responsive to ads, simply because they are about stuff they care about. How many of you are like "Damn....another freakin' commercial!" when its about a computer? I know a lot of you do that, but I'm guessing most of you don't. So it ends up being better for us, and the advertiser!
So maybe its not all that bad! Gotta look at the bright side of things!
Uh, thats what a countersuit is...and thats done at practically the same time...not to mention the whole thing about not having a person pay for MS's legal fees if MS wins won't work cause the larger the company, the more legal fees. Even if its a small little trial a large corporation will purposefully spend a lot of money on legal fees, for the whole reason of winning them back should they win the actual suit....
Unless you have your computer completely out of the case, the CPU is STILL getting quite a bit of the air from the fans. And if it is open, well, 'nuff said. And I have no doubt that it has some form of heatsink, if not a massive heatsink...that also keeps it cooler. If I remember, I believe the G3 runs at 72 degrees with a single fan...not sure if it had a heatsink or not, but its still up on the K6...and try to get a K6 (no reason trying on a pentium!) to get below 32 degrees with a simple peltier (spelling???) and water cooling system...I've seen that done on a Mac... Blake
Actually, FireWire is faster than SCSI. I don't have the stats, but I believe it is correct. and yes, you can build massive RAID arrays on it, you can have almost infinte numbers of drives in the chain, and I believe (not sure) it is cheaper than SCSI. I also think it uses different I/O, which makes it faster with multiple drives on a chain. I don't now if this info is one hundred percent correct, but I believe it is correct. I do have a question though....what are the stats of Fibre Channel?
Well, they sure as hell didn't stop martial law during the civil way.

How can it be considered competition for a couple of technologies when the main purveyors of those new technologies are all going bankrupt?

No....THX certification is based on sound quality of the components, including the Dolby Digital Processor, amplifier, and speakers...
