  1. That does it! Real* is out, asf is in. on RealPlayer Uploads Your ID Too · · Score: 1

    I like to record memorable episodes of Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy etc. and compress them with realencoder. The only reason I've been using this instead of asf is the cool splicing utility that comes with it that allows me to get rid of commercials and stick files together. Now I'm resuming my search for an asf editor because I can use ATIplayer to view them instead of the proprietary realplayer, they look a helluva lot better and they compress 3x as fast (Ill put up with M$ for a copy of The Matrix at VHS quality for only 576 MB). Anyone know of a splicing utility for asf?

    I personally welcome the idea of temperature sensitive Coke machines. I'll wait till the dead of night, carry a 3 gallon (~12 L) jug full of ice and a shopping cart with me to the machine. Then I'll dump the ice all over the machine, empty all the Coke into the cart for $0.01 a can, and disappear into the night. I hope nobody reading this is a cop or an engineer from Coke; I guess I really should stop scheming out loud.

    If I had a nickel for every time I dropped something electronic (phone, gameboy, portable cd player, etc.) into water and then was able to fix it with a hairdryer I would have...well at least $.25 or so. Before coughing up the dough for a new phone, see what you can do with it. Most electronics are waterproof, as long as there isn't any water-soluble glue or structural cardboard in it chances are pretty good that it will work again.

    Nothing helps you through one of those monster 30-hour CS projects like a big 64oz sitting on your desk! I don't know if it was the caffeine helping me concentrate or the fact that I had to stop every hour to take a piss, but I did find a correlation between the number of doublequarts I went through and my resulting grade on the project. For the record, my record was 192 oz in 25 hours; if anyone else has beaten that I'd like to hear about it. 8}

    How do we know there isn't some kind of "wind resistance" in space, or maybe an antigravity source outside the solar system? All that physicists have been going on until now is math, this could be the first evidence that we are wrong. Nobody contradicted the ether theory or the belief that the earth was flat until contradictory evidence was presented, so this could just be history repeating itself. If your figures are correct, I completely agree about the manned mission to Mars. The l\only problem is that it's kinda hard to get the ship, crew, and supplies for a 6-12 month mission off the ground all at one time. It would be much easier to send repeated missions to mars, the moon, and other places if we could get around the problem of launching stuff from earth.

    I just finished my 2nd CS class at GA Tech (it was hell but I got an A) and in retrospect Java seems like a very good language choice. The first CS class used pseudocode to keep us from becoming too dependent on the compiler for development and debugging, and was similar to Java (high-level, OO, some punctuation). Because of this class I am now proficient in Java and am able to read and, to a certain extent, write C++. It's a good language if you want to learn real programming quickly.

    Most new machines can have their hardware shot to hell by a malicious program. With mine you can overwrite the soldered-in BIOS chip (goodbye mainboard), grossly overclock the processor and video cards, and even crank up the processor voltage and shut off the fans. True, all this is very handy for tweaking, but some kind of manual override would be nice. So far I haven't heard of a virus that does more than kill the BIOS, but I'm sure some [cr/h]acker will come up with one soon.
