> After all, then the price is lowered a bit (they will be forced to when the Xbox arrived) they sell the hardware at loss and are supposed to make it up on the games.
Even without the Xbox, the PS2 sells at a loss... all consoles do. And the money they make is not just on games, it's on the IDEs and the SDKs as well.
Sony will sell a PS2 compatible hard disk drive unit with a broadband communications capability and is expected to sport... What they're hoping for is probably to make more money on the consoles themselves by selling premium equipment like the hard disk and the modems. For all you know, it might require you to sign up with some service that offers in order to play the online games, thereby increasing revenues.
The browser could possibly limit the sites visitable by the user (a-la-AOL) to those relevent to the PS2.
Can the name MicroMoney be used legally by the Deutshe Telekom ?
It's already used by some company making a financial package for Palm - Something like quicken

Well, I was thinking that this whole GoIP and headcasting thing might be some interface which captures frames directly from the webcam or whatever the recording device is and sends it (possibly compressed) to the destination, without any software needed for capturing, sending etc...The Matrox Vid card on the other end can directly read these IP packets and extract the video information from them!
d00d, while talking of software development, high level programming is usually the web/vb kinda programming and low level is the kernel/asm kinda programming
I added the -v option so that i could see what was going on.. and when i posted the commands to slashdot, i added the redirect
so that i wouldn't need an excuse as to why the list of files are not there..
tar zxvf comes naturally, converting that to gunzip -c |tar xvf when under solaris is painful enf...

I'm no Doug Miller but here're my 2 cents
The change between windows ME/2k and XP can be compared to the drastic change between 3.1 and 95/98. In the same way that the internet(IE) became more integerated with the interface in 95/98 and files(documents) and not programs became more important, in windows XP, (multi)media and Windows Media Player are integrated in a large way into the interface. Documents are no longer the stars - it's the media that make up these documents. MSN Explorer is also more or less integrated into the interface and i think you can see some integration with passport as well.
I guess that would be a pretty large list of changes to the standard 2k/ME interface
The RIAA probably sees this as an easy way to achieve two of its targets:-
1) To combat online piracy by allowing only approved music to be traded.
2) To curb the growing popularity of indie artists by allowing only artists on its payroll or those who are supported (and who support the RIAA) to come up and distribute music
Such a move - i.e a preview screening of all songs - would also allow the RIAA to spot up and coming artists early so that they can be brought under the RIAA's net.
This makes me wonder whether this could actually benefit indie and small artists in the long run by helping their music reach the ears of the big record companies early on so that they can have their big break.
PRZ seems to stress on the points that PGP has NO backdoors as of now and that he and NAI have different visions of the product. Could this be somekind of a hint that NAI now wants to build backdoors into their product, probably to appease NSA or something like that ? After all we know that many MS products do have NSA backdoors.
May be it's about time microsoft did a registration of all possible names and symbols that start or end with the letter X.. directX, activeX, Xbox, windows XP etc. etc. or for that matter, copyright the letter X itself - "the use of a alphabet formed by the intersection of two diagonals in all products"
This reminds me of a similar instance here, when a new 'free' ISP gave out dialup software that would run under windows only. Me and a friend cracked this by setting up a ppp server running on his m/c in linux and dumping and observing the packets rcvd. We found out that the only thing this dialup software did was to append a single constant character to the password while sending it (cleartext of course) to the server.
Most of these and similar instances should not be seen as deliberate attempts to undermine OSos's or anything but in this competetive market, the person who releases the product first is at an advantage and in that case it makes sense for them to ship software only for a familiar, easy to develop, large mkt share OS than for a niche market..
they'll probably release the linux versions later.
This article is an utter piece of shit! It is too premature and far too much of an exagerration to say that our culture is doomed to failure just because a miniscule section of kids spend a few hours a day playin some silly game, after which they, just like other kids, go out and play ball or go do homework or watch movies or whatever it is that kids their age do.
What kind of weable computers did they use now ?
and who says it's gonna run linux anyways ? for all you know (thanks to code morphing and all) it might use some new instruction set with its own simple embedded OS and applications.
I guess it is possible to move towards a single distro future if it incorporates the features of all the current distribution and have options that allow you to choose from a HUGE set of configuration options while at the same time allowing for a 'typical' or 'compact' mode install which the desktop would prefer.
Such a distribution could have a custom installation option that would not only let you choose the packages to install but also configure the kernel ( SMP, Bigmem, JournalingFS etc.. ), set up and configure server deamons, set up networks or even clusters, do a copycat install over dozens of machines etc.. Now having such a mega-distribution with the concerted efforts of all the major Distro and Platform vendors.
But would having such a super-distro taking up a few 4.7G DVDs be economically feasible than having seperate ( Standard/Professional/Enterprise etc,. ) distros from each taget buyer type remains open to discussion.

imagine a beowolf cluster of these
