FWIW, Google didn't build Google maps or Google earth. NEITHER were invented by google. Both were acquisitions (WhereTo and Keyhole respectively.
Interesting to note a lot of the hypocrisy related to innovation vs acquisition over the last few days. It seems that when Microsoft acquires a company or technology, it is labeled as playing catch up. When Google acquires a company (or 2 in this case) they are widely credited as innovators.
Finally the worst part Identity theft. Government ID card is supposed to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that you are who you say you are. If you have a card with your photo on it, with your fingerprints and genetic fingerprint all matching then obviously you must be the person named on it with access to all your bank accounts, property deeds etc. Anything I've missed?
Isn't the entire point of having your photo and your fingerprints/retina scan whatever on your ID card to prevent Identity theft ?
Someone else can steal your card but they should not be able to use it to pretend to be you because their fingerprint/photo won't match yours
In order for any authentication system to be secure, it should be based on:-
Something you have (in this case the ID card )
Something you are (your face or fingerprint)
Something you know (for e.g. a password)
It is sufficient to check for any two of these things in order to be reasonably secure.
Atleast part of the higher RAM requirements can be attributed to the fact the XP is a multi user OS, and there is a high overhead for the security that is required. Ditto for the process requirements
A lot of the higher disk space requirements are due to the Media that comes with XP + all the new software. You don't expect windows movie maker to run off thin air do you ?
Add to that all the new drivers, the new themes with all the JPEGs and MP3s and Poooof there goes 1G.
Many OS's boot loaders had this problem of not supporting Hard disks > 8.4G. this has to do with the way CHS (Cylinder, head, sector ) data in Hard drives is numbered using 24-bit addresses = this gives a max of 16M physical sectors - which meant 8.4G.
Linux also had this problem (with LILO atleast, don't know about the other bootloaders) and you had to place the kernel in a partition that fell within the 8.4G limit

Only something the like of DOS - with no or minimal layers of abstraction can fit within an MB - providing any kind of abstraction to I/O, networking or Display will cause the footprint to go thru the roof !
It was shipped in NZ first because the ship date was sept 24 and nz is the first major landmass which has an MS subsidiary and the earliest place where the day breaks!
For the record...
winxp DOES run games a lot faster than win2k. i get 55fps in Q3 (640x480) while i get close to 70 on winxp - using the latest nvidia drivers of course (winxp does crib while u install the drivers - something abt them not being tested by whql - but u can ignore that).

Yeah, this reminds me of the fact that 87.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot!
The difference is that the Uni had your SSN. The magazine has nothing except your name & address.
Hmm.. and where are the MacTV, eMate and Newton today?? Heck. Microsoft sells more XboXen than Apple sells Macs.
Here's a list of all the sony stores in the USA. Note that some of them haven't opened yet.
It isn't. Joe Schmoe doesn't want to use a web browser. He wants to use the internet.
True.. check out the photo I took there a while back - 3'rd photo. Look at all the dead trees
I think you meant.. In Soviet Russia, India outsources to you!
If you thought that was bad, check out the price of the same book in an Indian bookstore:
FirstAndSecond.com sells this book for INR 245 (5 USD!).
And you can write a review and save another $2!
And how exactly do you set the default application for a filetype in linux ?
Ha, in linux, there IS no concept of file associations of any kind.
Microsoft Exchange has a unified message store and a message recall feature.
Duhhhhh.. but I thought XP shipped without Java support ?? :-)
This link has the feature list as well.
You must be a Microsoft user.

Some of us don't have that problem.
You must be living in the past.

WinXP Embedded memory footprints vary from 4 to 70 mb depending on what you need...kernel-mode only system or a full xp with IE, WMP etc..

64-bit windows can run 32-bit windows apps - can 64-bit linux even run 32-bit linux let alone windows apps ?
My netscape browser can detect any web bug ! it prints "Bus error (core dumped)" everytime it sees one !
