Evolution is pretty bad at guessing words too in my experience (I'm a bad speller). ASpell and Word are the best spell checkers I have ever used, although I have not seen any open source applications that combine Inline spell checking with Aspell.

  3. Thurderbird needs a good spell checker on Three New Releases (And Other News) From Mozilla · · Score: 3, Insightful

I like Thunderbird, but the spell checker is really bad, especially at guessing words. Wish they would use ASpell. What this e-mail client really needs in an inline spell checker.

SMS is massive in europe, overtaking voice calls for the younger generation (under 25's?). So I guess it must have it's uses.

  5. Re:Feature request on New Mozilla-based Mail Client: Minotaur · · Score: 1

My e-mail goes back to about 1997 (247Mb). My IMAP server is an old computer running Gentoo. It sits in my attic with nothing more than a network connection (to an ADSL router/switch), and power source.

  6. Re:Re-inventing the wheel, and doing it with XUL on New Mozilla-based Mail Client: Minotaur · · Score: 1

Well, I haven't yet found an e-mail client I am totally happy with yet. Shamefully, Outlook Express handles IMAP better than any Linux IMAP client I have used so far. Evolution comes close as a good overall e-mail program, but it has some very annoying GUI problems, like the tedious process of viewing the header/source of just one e-mail for example.

Yep, IMAP is truly liberating. Doesn't matter what OS or email client I want to use - all my mail with it's many folders are available at an instant. Best of all, when I am not at my own computer, then checking my e-mail is just a matter of opening a browser, and going to my squirrelmail site.

  10. Re: RDS Rules! on U.K. Pirate Broadcasters Steal Car Radio Listeners · · Score: 1

I assume you haven't used RDS. It provides many functions, all of which can be disabled. In it's most basic mode it will simply display the station name your tuned into (and it's content type), which in itself is handy on the ever crowded bandwidth. Switch it into traffic mode (which what this story is about), and it will interrupt whatever your listening too (CD/MD/Tape/Radio/MP3) as soon as another station starts broadcasting a traffic report. If it's not of interest you can press a button, and it cancels, returning you to whatever you had on before (it does this automatically after the broadcast too). Press the button again, and it switches off completely.

It does other things too, like synchronize your clocks.

  12. Direct X and Visual Studio on "What is Linux Missing?" · · Score: 2

Linux needs something like Microsoft's Direct X to encourage game developers.

Also, like so many others, I make a good living writing Visual Basic apps. you can knock together some very nice database apps in no time at all. If I had this available under Linux, I would happily tell all my customers to switch.
