  1. Re:Because so many customers who call up are wrong on Customers Treated as Culprits in Support Calls? · · Score: 1

except for the "customers always lie" part. many will claim to be masters because they can manage both outlook and ie (using them should be clue enough that they're not). to some "a little bit" is knowing where the power button is but not that the "pointing thingy" is a mouse.

  2. Nigel Cunningham on Unsung Heroes of Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

Nigel Cunningham of the Software Suspend project. I've been using this on my laptop for a long time now, and it works great. He's kept development active and is very helpful. definitely makes my laptop more useable. kudos to Nigel!

  3. combine your interests wherever possible on Non-Traditional Career Routes? · · Score: 1

i've always been into computers, but had never really thought about it as a career. when i started university i was in biology with the intention of continuing into veterinary medicine. after a year of bio i was hating it and getting better grades in my non-bio classes, so after contemplating math, chemistry, and physics (or some combination), i went into the physics program. throughout my physics degree i took a bunch of math and computer science courses and got a minor in chemistry. by the time i'd finished that degree i knew that i wanted to use chemistry/physics in my career, but knew i didnt want to be an experimental physicist, so i spent a year taking more computer science and math courses to prepare myself for a more theory/computational direction. i then got into the scientific computation program at the university of minnesota. (semi outdated webpage here). great program with lots of different options from many different departments, so i was able to pick and choose exactly the courses that most interested me. i've loved the time i've spent here and strongly recommend this program to anyone with broad interests, but still geared towards science and computers. i'll be graduating at the end of the semester and look forward to putting what i've been doing to work.

  4. SANE on Why Linux Won't Ever Be Mainstream · · Score: 1

since i didnt see it mentioned i figured i should throw in a plug for SANE as that's what i use with my scanner. their supported devices page lists some HP scanners which are supported and also has a link to further USB specific info. the USB page has this to say about the HP 3300C:

There are rummors that like the HP5300C this is actually an Avision scanner and could be support by the Avision backend. However at the moment there is no positive confirmation of this.

even if this scanner isnt specifically supported yet, there apppears to be lots of other supported hp scanners which you (or someone else) could work from. dont give up yet.

  5. katz doesn't know what he's talking about on Review: Final Fantasy · · Score: 1

wow, i have to say that katz is way off the mark on this one. the cg was simply amazing. i cant see how things like hair could possibly done better as it just seemed perfect. my one and only complaint was with the animation of the characters talking. their faces are expressionless and their jaws just move up and down with no expression or other facial movement. seemed silly that so much else in the movie would have been done so well and then this would have been so half-assed looking. sure the story wasnt perfect, but i'd go see it again just for the visuals.

  6. napster makes me buy more on Jupiter Report Says Napster Users Buy MORE Music · · Score: 1

i think it's great to see results like this. personally, there are a bunch of cds that i own that i never would have considered buying without napster, and others that i was unsure about. being able to hear more of an album than the 'big radio single' can definately help ones decision into whether or not to buy a cd. there are other times when i've found things on napster 'accidentally' while searching for something else and it turned out to be good, so i've checked out more and then finally bought the cd. it's a great way to recommend things to people aswell. i am not a big radio listener these days, so if someone says 'hey, have you heard this band, they're pretty good' i'll then take a look on napster and have a listen. most of the time the result is that i end up buying the cd and deleting the mp3s. other times the mp3 sucks so i just delete it and save the $15 that i could have wasted on a cd.

i think that this last point could be one of the fears that the music industry has. by picking what they feel is the strongest or catchiest song on an album for the single, they are trying to lure you into buying the album. many times even if the single is good, the rest of the album can be crap. if you can 'try before you buy' the chances of you wasting your money (and feeding the record companies) drop. sure, they probably make alot of money from 'good' artists, but there are alot of 'one hit wonder' type bands that they'll lose out on if people are able to see that everything else is crap before they waste their money on it.

  9. nice work on Frankenstein Time · · Score: 1

while i dont always enjoy katz's features, i must say that i enjoyed this one. nice work jon.

the genome project started with noble goals, but as soon as more and more groups started working on it and it became a 'race' all considerations of the ethical and moral issues seem to have been thrown aside. it seems that, for the most part, these companies just want to get their patents and make their money. as a result, even the non-profit groups have had to join the 'race' and fight to finish first, thinking only of the potential benefits, be they to society or to their wallets, and not of the inherent moral and ethical issues surrounding the ability to rewrite any part of the human makeup.

i think more people need to take a step back and look at the big picture and not just the 'cure for cancer' or the 'fountain of youth'. there's a whole lot more too it, and most of it isnt good.

the good news about it is that while the map is there, it'll still take some time before science is able to build the 'perfect baby'. hopefully between now and then everyone will have time to think about this further and realize that it shouldnt be done.

  10. Re:Command line version? on XMMS 1.0.0 Released · · Score: 1

i dont use x much and dont want the extra load of something i'm not going to look at, so i stick to command line players. normally i use amp, but for the extra functionality of a playlist and an ncurses based interface i use gamp. gamp is still in the early stages and occasionally wont play certain tracks, but it is a good start. I hope to finish some improvements to it and get a new version up soon.
