It's funny that you should bring in religion in a discussion about gender equality. Since it's nobody's darned business what your religion is (and employers, for example, aren't allowed to ask), that should be a non-issue (and anyone who wants to make it an issue should find something more constructive to do with their time).

As for skin color, discriminatory hiring practices (as well as discrimination against members of the public based on skin color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, etc) are also banned.

As for the "implementing the binary gender model", we're getting away from that as well. Last year the APA finally officially changed their stance that "transsexualism is a disorder", 40 years after they did the same for other members of the LGBT; it's not perfect, but we're getting there.

Which brings us to the all-girls-only opportunity. It doesn't have to be 50-50. You could set a limit to the class size, and fill it based on 50-50. If there are still spaces left at the end, let the other gender take those unused spaces.

Quotas are only meant to be a temporary measure, BTW. :-)

If mice were the cat's sole supply of food, the cat that successfully ate all the mice would die of hunger - and kill off all the other cats at the same time.

Now in real life, mice are a lot harder to catch than in fairy tales. Their innate timidity prevents them from taking many of the risks that would get them eaten by the cat.

The best way to fight discrimination is to set the example by not discriminating. A few generations ago, kids were segregated by sex in school. Today we'd see that as definitely interfering with their normal social development.

Ditto this program - admit equal numbers of both sexes/genders, get them to work together and experience the fact that the other sex likes it as well, making it normal that either sex can do it. What are we always telling our kids? "Two wrongs don't make a right." Maybe we should be more consistent in practicing what we preach, or they'll see that discrimination based on sex is still okay.

"Re-skilling" is not a viable strategy past a certain age. Not only will you end up trying to compete with younger people who actually have experience, but in some cases it's just not physically possible due to the handicaps from the catastrophic health event.

if you're going to accept that 40 is unemployable when retirement is 75 then you have a *massive* social security problem which is not resolved by wishing things were different.

Once an older person (50+) accumulates too many handicaps, they ARE unemployable for all practical purposes. Wishing things were different isn't going to change that. For them, "Freedom 55" means "You're free to drop out of mainline society and be marginalized."

But the problem is that just like the NFL, these high school and college football programs are hiding these head injury risks from the players. It's not the kids' fault that the adults they should be able to trust are putting them into risky situations without properly informing them of the risks.

That's not a solution. Minors can't give informed consent. They are not adults, and the presumption is that, lacking enough real-word experience, they are more subject to peer pressure, etc., and less capable of understanding what "life-long brain damage" really means. Kids think they're invulnerable, that it won't happen to them (a lot of adults also think the same wrt addiction, risky driving habits, etc).

The likelihood of developing a mental illness increases with age

"According to a rigorous health survey conducted by the CDC in 2004, an estimated 25 percent of adults in the U.S. reported having a mental illness in the previous year. Lifetime prevalence rates of mental illness in the U.S. were around 50 percent when measured back in 2004. That means in a family of four, one of you likely has a mental illness.

However, mental illness is greatly weighted toward our senior years, when things start looking pretty bleak.

On the other hand, younger people are more likely to ... develop a debilitating substance addiction ...

use of illegal drugs is increasing in the 50+ group. In other words, the older you are, the higher the risk.

On the other hand, younger people are more likely to ... commit suicide ...

The first peak in suicide rates is 15-24 years old. Given that you're not hiring high school or junior college students, we can ignore this group. Suicide rates drop for the next age cohort, and then increase with age. Specifically, suicide rates are highest for women aged 45-54, and for men aged 75 and older.

Also, men are 4x more likely to successfully commit suicide, so to continue your line of thought, maybe employers should only hire women :-)
